What's going on with Pokémon Go's visual glitches? I asked a game developer to try and find out

The article goes into a range of recent visual issues, with a game developer offering their thoughts on what might be going on. Quote from the piece:

>They believe that, in various instances, it's the result of Pokémon Go's developers making the best of limited memory resources. Textures take up a 'huge amount' of memory, they said, and it's often a case of using them in clever ways to try and fit everything in. As a result, the wrong texture can occasionally be referenced.

>"The challenge for them is that the game keeps growing, but the amount of memory available for the game isn't expanding, so they have to constantly find ways to cleverly load / unload just what they need and it can lead to bugs like this," they explained.

This week in Pokémon Go (18th to 24th May): Falinks to the past

From the article:

"As the 'Spring Marathon' event - with its arrival of Flittle and Timed Research for marathon visor Pikachu - draws to a close, it's time for a quieter week. Thankfully, the 'Explore, Catch, Battle' research will keep us busy ahead of Super Mega Raids and a new debut at the weekend."

Two new Pokémon and another Community Day: This week in Pokémon Go (11th to 17th May)

From the article:

"The game's one week on, one week off event schedule enters a busy period with the 'Spring Marathon' event and the debut of two unreleased Pokémon. Elsewhere, regional Ultra Beasts hit raids from Wednesday, and there's yet another Community Day on Saturday - this time for a fan-favourite Dark- and Dragon-type. A lot going on, in other words."

Didn't see this mentioned on the reddit, so:

"Pokémon Go will feature a new raid type which will see players hold their phones in the air during battle, datamines suggest.

"According to text discovered by PokeMiners, Unity Raids - which will require "a massive number of Trainers" to complete - will feature Unity Attacks that are charged by raising and holding phones into the air at set times, such as when the raid boss's health is low.

"Trainers cannot flee the battle once it begins, according to an in-game tutorial, and if all Pokémon faint, players will have to wait until they are automatically revived."

From the article:

"No, your game isn't bugged: for the first time in almost six and a half years, there is no Giovanni Special Research in Pokémon Go.

"Usually, when a Team Go Rocket event rolls around in Pokémon Go, new Special Research which involves fighting Grunts, Leaders, and eventually Giovanni unlocks. This started back in November 2019 with the introduction of 'Looming in the Shadows', and has been a mainstay of the game since, with another chance to encounter Giovanni (and his new highlighted legendary shadow Pokémon) every few months.

"As of this week and 2026's 'Steeled Resolve' event, this has changed. The 'Taken Over' portion of the event has now begun, ushering in line-up changes for Team Go Leaders and Giovanni as usual, but there's no new Special Research that rewards a Super Rocket Radar required to encounter Giovanni.

"Instead, players have to complete the 'Steeled Resolve' Go Pass to unlock one. As before, a Super Rocket Radar can be obtained for free, but there's a catch: you have to reach the final rank of the Basic Go Pass before the event ends on Monday, 4th May at 8pm local time to do so. Another change is that paying players can unlock another Super Rocket Radar right away if they opt to purchase the Deluxe track of the Go Pass.

"In summary, when a 'Taken Over' event takes place, there's now two opportunities to get a Super Rocket Radar - one free, one paid - and you no longer have to complete a questline to get either.

"This also applies to new or lapsed players, by the way: we verified that progressing past the introductionary 'A Troubling Situation' Special Research (which usually leads players to the most recent Giovanni quest, currently 'Precious Pals: Taken Over') on an account yet to complete it as of this morning (30th April) no longer unlocks any new Special Research, suggesting the Giovanni questlines really are gone for good."

From the article:

"Since the arrival of the 'Memories in Motion' season, Pokémon Go has largely rejigged the event structure with a one week on, one week off approach. It's meant we've seen busy event weeks with new spawns, research and a Go Pass to complete, followed by quiet periods in-between with much less to do.

"It seems Niantic has plans to address this by testing a new "evergreen weeks" feature. During non-event weeks, branching research will allow players to "choose your own way to play", according to an announcement shared with Community Ambassadors, which has been shared on reddit and verified by One More Catch as being authentic.

"There will be three options based on 'exploration', 'skill' or 'battling', with challenges and rewards to match. For example, 'exploration' will focus on walking with bonus XP for spinning PokéStops, while 'battling' will be around raids, giving players additional raid XP."

From the article:

"LEGO is teaming up with Pokémon Go during Go Fest Copenhagen between 12th and 14th June.

"Players can encounter "LEGO experiences" in both the Fælledparken where Go Fest is taking place, as well as the København and Tivoli Gardens LEGO Stores.

"In-game, there will be:

  • A LEGO Stamp Rally, where players have to find specific PokéStops to collect stamps, earning a Pikachu with a Special Background
  • Timed Research by visiting the Fælledparken or the LEGO Stores, with rewards including items and "event-themed Pokémon"
  • Event-themed stickers from spinning PokéStops at the two LEGO Stores"
