Open enrollment with spouse

my husband added me to his work insurance months ago. now it’s my turn to add him to mine just so we’re both secure with our two insurances. now I’m seeing how expensive it is to add him…more than twice what I pay for myself alone just to add him! at this point, is it better to just cancel my insurance and go on his? the money saved could be used for cobra if ever needed in the future.

Looking for motivation

almost five years in and I keep asking myself what magic my seniors have that I haven’t figured out. Work product that almost always goes out the door (though to be fair I’ve seen my work product also start going out with little to no edits these past few months but I occasionally hit road blocks and finger wags). They’re also billing significantly higher numbers with less time spent at their desk. in any event, I just need to know that it won’t always be like this where I’m constantly butt-in-chair trying to hit 8 while scratching my head on a crazy opposition that addresses plaintiff’s crazy motion while also making sense for the partner. or, if that is how it always is, that I’ll at least get better at it. side note on the billing: I did develop a better habit at my prior firm on capturing time before coming here and being hit with new billing restrictions. Still, the higher ups get crazy numbers while I try to work on whatever billable work I can while making the numbers stick and trying to get a good work product. it’s a harder balancing act than it sounds. anyone have a motivational story or anything along those lines?

Acting up again!

I should’ve left the house 15 minutes ago. my moka pot is still on the stove, nothing has come out of the spout yet. I have no idea why this happens!

When does one get a hang of this job?

I’m almost five years in and I’m still trying to get the hang of making sure my cases are properly worked up, my pleadings don’t need edits and that my motions hit the nail on the head. oh, and that my billing sticks. is there ever an “aha” point where I finally hit the mark?

so how does it work? let’s say (just for a rough example with simple numbers), I bill $30K a month for bills that stick, and I have a paycheck of $10k a month (before taxes and insurance of course). is that pretty much breaking even? the rest goes to overhead and firm profit? what does the partner get from that? I’m curious.

I do not. I’m friends with a colleague who I don’t have any cases with. other than that, I maintain a wall even though I’m nice and occasionally conversational. I’ll sometimes bring holiday gifts even though I clearly don’t celebrate Christmas. I brought cookies and chocolate for the team from my recent holiday. but I don’t go out of my way to say hey what’s up. I know being liked and well-favored can get you far in the work place but I think being “friends” with the boss is a little..sticky. am I too jaded? I also get a little antsy when there’s too much chatting unrelated to billable work because I have a hard time keeping up with billing already.

sometimes I look at my boss (the one who is above my senior and I) and I’m like wow. I’ve never seen you do anything impressive. I rarely see you have any bright ideas either. the seniors who work under her (and above me) do a lot of impressive stuff. I get that high up partners rarely do day to day court arguments or depos or motions. but I’ve never seen her do anything impressive. for big depos, she sends the seniors. for depos that are big, but we take a back seat, she goes and I know she doesn’t say anything in those depos. do a lot of senior partners just get to their place by being complacent and hanging around long enough? I understand that client handling is a big part of their job, and I see that she does that (though whether she does it impressively, I’m not sure).
