Lately I have seen some claim that discs don't contain the full game, & require a forced download/patch to be playable, or that physical ownership is meaningless because Sony or whoever can magically brick your discs with an update.
Yet when asked for proof of Sony ever blocking discs or confronted with doesitplay.org 's data showing that around 83%+ of tested PS5 games are playable without requiring patches/downloads, the goalposts/cope immediately starts moving to:
1- Dismissing their data as bogus by misrepresenting what the site tests which is whether games are playable without a patch/download, not whether they receive patches.
1a-Another sample from this very thread: Calls their numbers made up because he doesn't understand them, but doesn't wanna read their methodology explanation page which was linked above.
3-Changed the argument from patches are forcefully need to patches are my preference and who wants to play without them therefore discs are irrelevant
4-Using a handful of extremely buggy releases(which doesitplay's stats already account for)
Hell It's fine if someone doesn't care about discs, I myself have been PC digital only after the PS4 and only got a PS5 a few months ago for GTA VI and to replay my old ps4 discs, but the mental gymnastics to diminish their relevancy are hilarious.
Cognitive dissonance at it's finest.
Was looking into the 2024 leak discussions which contained sales data for games up to mid 2023, enough data to extract digital/Physical sales numbers but there was also an article that goes into this
https://tech4gamers.com/playstation-physical-discs/
TLDR: 1st party and triple AAA game sales were nowhere near 80% as of 3 years ago(God of War Ragnarok was as of mid 2023 was 67% physical and 33% digital for example)
Sony combines the sales of all AAA, dlc, microtransactions, free, indie and online only games, which obviously are skewered towards digital releases, and tries to pass it off as "AAA games on average sell 80% digital" which isn't the case.
This is even after the advantage of Sony selling a digital only console for $100 cheaper(Which entices unsuspecting parents to buy it) which accounts for 50% of their sales and selling the Pro disc-less to entice digital purchases.
Sony wants to monopolize the games market by capturing used sales, and hope people get FOMO "omg everyone is buying digital so I should too!" leading to people paying $59.99 for 8yo RDR2 vs $15 in Marketplace unless Sony decides to host a Holiday sale.
