STOP DIGITAL GAMES STOP PS PLUS

Sony has decided that PlayStation games will become digital-only starting in 2028.

If you're happy with that, that's your choice.

I'm not.

This isn't about hating digital. It's about losing the choice to buy physical games. Once they're gone, they're gone forever.

With digital purchases, you don't truly own your games the way you own a physical copy. You lose the ability to lend them, resell them, preserve them, or keep them independently of Sony's ecosystem.

If you want Sony to reconsider, don't just complain.

Cancel your PS Plus subscription when it expires and don't renew it until physical games return.

Companies don't listen to words.

They listen to money.

A potential middle-ground for the digital-only future: On-demand physical minting (Venting/Discussion)

I’ve been thinking a lot about the industry's aggressive push toward a digital-only future. Sony is increasingly sidelining disc drives, and Nintendo already relies heavily on digital codes/game-cards.

I was trying to conceptualize a solution where publishers keep their digital ecosystem, but players don't lose ownership and preservation. I believe Nintendo is uniquely positioned to do something different here, and the concept of a "Game-Key" might be the answer.

The Core Idea (As an optional, extra tier):

Nintendo could sell official, blank, rewriteable cartridges. Each blank cartridge would have a unique, server-side verified hardware ID to prevent counterfeiting. When you buy a digital game, you would have the option to permanently "mint" or bind that digital license to this blank cartridge via your console.

Once minted, you would have two potential approaches (either or both could work):

The Preservation Approach (Full Offline Game): The digital game is removed from your account's cloud library and burned onto the cartridge, including all current (and future) updates and DLCs. The cartridge now acts exactly like a traditional retail game. It protects the consumer against future digital storefront closures and internet blackouts.

The License Approach (The Physical Key): If writing the whole game isn't feasible due to file sizes, the cartridge simply becomes a physical cryptographic key. The game data itself still needs to be downloaded on a new console, but the license is bound to the cartridge, making it transferable/re-sellable.

Anticipating the Objections (Why this benefits both sides):

I’m not naive; I know publishers want digital-only to kill the second-hand market and maximize profits. However, this approach actually opens up a brand-new revenue stream for Nintendo: they could sell blank cartridges, customizable cases, and official sticker/stamp kits (e.g., a premium Zelda-themed blank cartridge).

Regarding security and piracy: it wouldn't be any less secure than what we have now. The encryption keys would be entirely controlled by Nintendo's servers during the minting process. Flashcarts and dumping tools already exist for current retail cartridges anyway; this wouldn't worsen that landscape.

Even if Nintendo chose the most anti-consumer implementation—locking the minted cartridge to your specific hardware/account so it couldn't be resold—it would still be a win for preservation, ensuring you can play your games offline decades from now when the servers are long gone.

This is mostly just a brain dump/vent from someone worried about the death of physical media. What do you think? If this digital transition is truly permanent and inevitable, what other creative compromises could the industry actually implement?

It's not enough to have discs

In 2005 when the 360 launched, and saw it had online connectivity and sent updates through the internet, I saw right away, I said to a friend that they would brick your console at some point, likely when the next generation is out to force you to buy a new system. They called me crazy.

Now they are taking away online purchases, and telling you to kick rocks. They lock you in a cage. Yea, I know physical discs are just installers, they don't have the actual game on it like on the PS2, it installs to the internal storage because many of the games coming out would suck if the game had to stream from disc. It kind of sucked on PS2, which is why so many of us were installing modchips and running HDLoader to install PS2 games to a hard drive, faster load times.

We don't just need the option of owning physical discs, the discs must be able to be installed and played offline.

Why are people defending this so hard

This question is being posted to understand, not to attack anyone.

I’m sure most people here know what I’m referring to, but just in case, I’m talking about PlayStation not doing physical disc anymore after 2028.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve bought a lot of digital copies over the last few years(yes, I’m aware that I’m part of the problem). I’m still concerned with this move despite that.

I know companies in the past have admitted to hiring accounts and to using bots to change narratives to favor their company. I’m not saying Sony has done this as there is no proof of such. BUT if that’s not the case, why are so many here fighting against those that want to keep physical discs being made? What do you have to gain from this?

This isn’t a situation where we’re having to choose one or the other. Digital will continue to be a thing whether they still sells discs or not. Those of you that play only digital games will lose NOTHING if Sony changes its mind. If people boycott, it costs you NOTHING(unless you work for Sony).

Some of you have literally been attacking anyone that says they’re upset with the situation. Unless you work for Sony, I see literally no reason for this. So I’m asking again, why?

PS. I made this post for r/playstation and got immediately deleted. But as we’re going through this, I feel this is something we all need to start asking, hence I’m posting this here.

Save Physical Discs

I don't want anyone commenting on this post that "this is just performative activism and doesn't accomplish anything". It's better than nothing and is a good add on to other actions. If you are not actively doing anything yourself to solve this issue, then you don't have a right to say "this accomplishes nothing" if you are doing nothing yourself. And if you are doing something, please point us in the direction of what you think will be more effective instead of just saying "this won't solve anything". You are not being helpful

Physical game collection idea/goal 2027

Hello all,

How are you all doing? I want to invest in Nintendo Switch 2 for myself at the start of 2027 with the goal of starting a physical game collection & will display these in my gaming room/office space.

Do you have physical game collection/what platform? I dislike that the gaming industry is trying to force gamers into digital only for game collection & I have always been a collector as a hobby.
