Quick Incoterms breakdown for anyone new to exporting

FOB: your responsibility ends

at the origin port. Most commonly

used by Indian exporters.

CIF: you cover freight and insurance

to the destination port. Gives you

more control over shipping costs.

DAP: you deliver to buyer's location.

Maximum seller responsibility but

builds strong buyer trust.

New exporters always start with FOB.

Lower risk, easier to manage.

India to Singapore is a USD 35 Billion trade corridor here's what shippers need to know about transit times, top export categories, and freight options

Singapore is India's largest trading partner within ASEAN, accounting for 27.83% of India's total ASEAN trade. Yet many exporters especially mid-sized businesses still underestimate how well-served this corridor is in terms of frequency, speed, and modal options.

Here is a quick breakdown that may be useful:

Top exports from India to Singapore:

Petroleum products lead at 38%, followed by shipbuilding-related cargo at 14%, electrical machinery at 11.8%, pharmaceuticals, and refined salt and chemicals.

Transit times by sea:

Chennai to Singapore runs 6–10 days. JNPT Mumbai to Singapore is 8–15 days depending on the carrier and transshipment hub used.

By air:

Direct flight time is approximately 4 hours, making air freight a strong option for time-sensitive pharmaceutical or high-value cargo.

Practical note for exporters:

Singapore also functions as a transshipment and redistribution hub for the broader Southeast Asian region so cargo moving to Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, or Vietnam often passes through Singapore port anyway. Structuring your freight with that in mind can improve cost and transit efficiency significantly.

Happy to answer questions about documentation, freight mode selection, or LCL versus FCL for this corridor.

India's Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the United Kingdom is expected to enter into force in the second week of May 2026. The agreement gives 99% of Indian export tariff lines duty-free access to the UK, with textiles and garments going to zero duty from Day 1, marine products losing duties of up to 21.5%, and engineering goods gaining near-zero duty access across over 1,600 tariff lines. The agreement also includes customs clearance time commitments of 24-48 hours for general goods and 6 hours for perishables, plus MSME-friendly self-certification of origin. Happy to answer questions on documentation requirements, origin certification, or routing from Indian ports to the UK under the new agreement.

Effective May 4, 2026, the US military has commenced a large-scale naval escort operation called Project Freedom through the Strait of Hormuz. 15,000 personnel have been deployed, 49 commercial vessels have already been redirected, and Hormuz transits remain approximately 95% below normal levels since February 2026. For Indian exporters, this means freight rates remain elevated, May surcharges from major carriers including Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and ZIM are now active, and routing via Cape of Good Hope continues on most India-Europe and India-US trades. Happy to answer questions on how this affects specific trade lanes, documentation requirements or routing alternatives from Indian ports.

Sharing a photograph from a recent ODC heavy lift operation at JNPT, Nhava Sheva. A Hyundai excavator was loaded by gantry crane directly onto a Maersk vessel during night operations for export to Izmir Port, Turkey. ODC cargo of this type requires special port permits, custom lashing and securing, precise weight distribution calculations, specific carrier stowage instructions, and complete export documentation including ODC declarations. Happy to answer questions on the documentation process, permitting, or lashing requirements for heavy machinery exports from India.
