The Peace of Heaven

  1. Nothing in this world can give this peace, for nothing in this world is wholly shared. ²Perfect perception can merely show you what is capable of being wholly shared. ³It can also show you the results of sharing, while you still remember the results of not sharing. ⁴The Holy Spirit points quietly to the contrast, knowing that you will finally let Him judge the difference for you, allowing Him to demonstrate which must be true. ⁵He has perfect faith in your final judgment, because He knows that He will make it for you. ⁶To doubt this would be to doubt that His mission will be fulfilled. ⁷How is this possible, when His mission is of God? (ACIM, T-13.XI.4:1-7)

I've noticed how often I still expect peace to come from changes in my life like having more friends, different circumstances, or finally feeling understood. But every time I place peace in the future or in something external, it seems to slip away again.

This passage makes me wonder if the Holy Spirit isn't trying to take anything away from us, but simply showing us the difference between the peace that depends on circumstances and the peace that doesn't.

When I do experience even a moment of true peace through forgiveness, the external situation often hasn't changed at all. What changes is how I'm seeing it.

Thanks for reading 🙏

The Guiltless Son of God

The ultimate purpose of projection is always to get rid of guilt. ²Yet, characteristically, the ego attempts to get rid of guilt from its viewpoint only, for much as the ego wants to retain guilt you find it intolerable, since guilt stands in the way of your remembering God, Whose pull is so strong that you cannot resist it. ³On this issue, then, the deepest split of all occurs, for if you are to retain guilt, as the ego insists, you cannot be you. ⁴Only by persuading you that it is you could the ego possibly induce you to project guilt, and thereby keep it in your mind. (ACIM, T-13.II.1:1-4)

This passage really made me think about how often I carry guilt without even realizing it. Not just feeling bad about specific things, but sometimes letting those things become part of how I see myself. The idea that we can project guilt onto others while still keeping it within ourselves was something I had never really thought about before.

Closeness

Something happened that I never thought would happen.

If anyone remembers, a few months ago I wrote about my mother and how she had become mentally much better compared to a few years ago. This story is related to her too, but in a different way.

My mother and I never really had what you'd call a close relationship. We mostly ignored each other, in a way. It's hard to describe honestly. We didn't hate each other, we didn't argue all the time or fight or anything like that, but there just wasn't any real closeness between us. Meanwhile, I would see other people spending time with their parents like sharing hobbies, or simply hanging out. We never had that. Like two strangers living in the same house.

I've been practicing the lessons for the past few months, and somewhere along the way, something started to change. I can't say for sure whether it was because of the lessons, the conversations we had, or simply time, but this interaction felt completely different from anything we'd had before.

A few days ago, my mother unexpectedly came to the city where I study to visit me. She does visit a few times a year, but it's never been a surprise before.

We were in my apartment when she walked into my room and found my sketchbook. There was a drawing of a rabbit on one of the pages, and she made a comment about it before picking up the sketchbook and flipping through it. She started asking me the usual questions about my drawings, and then she mentioned that she used to enjoy drawing herself like mostly copying pictures.

From that point on, the conversation just kept flowing from one topic to another. For the first time in a very long time, I genuinely felt like there was some real closeness between the two of us. It was a feeling I honestly never expected to experience.
