Youth vs Experience: What is the right balance?

I hope we get Butters and Neale and I believe that these two also can offer invaluable knowledge to our youth.

In saying that I don't want to bring in these two and then see our young players not get the games. They need the games and particularly Swaddling and Allan have demonstrated they deserve the games.

If they don't get games, other clubs will swoop in and give them ago.

We won't be able to have everyone in the side if we make way for Neale and Butters. There is also talk of potentially bringing in Hogan or Stringer (Please not Stringer). Plus we're going to have players like Moore, Steene and Jamie (later in the year) return to the side.

We may need to trade players for picks and or offer players to Port as well.

How does everyone feel about this and what are your thoughts? Who should remain in the side? Who shouldn't and why? Is there any one who thinks we shouldn't bring in Butters, Neale, Hogan or Stringer and we should invest in what we've got?

West, Swaddling, Allan, Steene, Hayes, Puncher, Anderson, Howes, Long, Parker, Buller, Roan Steele, Sullivan and Harrison are who we've seen.

Saxena, McCarthy, Cochran, McInnes, Ryan, TJ, Prindable and Demattia we haven't or in the case of Ryan, barely seen anything.

Ryan, Cochran, Howes, Parker, Sully, Allan and Saxena are out of contract this year.

Anyone who thinks we should be offering Butters more?

I would think the estimated 1.8m is probably our starting offer. In any case, having thought about it more, I see no reason why Butters shouldn't be getting at least 2m from any club.

TDK is on 1.7m and Nas is on 2m.

What is everyone else's thoughts?

Nick Daicos appreciation post

I think we can all agree Nick is a legend.

He is an absolute work horse and no doubt the best player in the league.

Along with taking up the Captain duties with Maynard, whilst Moore has been injured, he has also been working as a part time recruiting agent trying to bring in Butters.

Is there anything this man cannot do?

I can't even imagine where our season would be at without him. If we end up getting Butters, I know he would have played a key role in swaying him away from the Bulldogs.

Give this man his 2026 brownlow medal already.

Nick if you're reading this, we love you. Don't leave us for Tassie or anyone else.

(Even if you do, you will always be a pie for life)

If we had to offer players to get Butters, who do you think we offer?

Just posting this for discussion purposes - forget picks or his desired destination. Just curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

The following players on our list are also from SA:

SA

  • Beau McCreery
  • Oscar Steene
  • Jakob Ryan
  • Harvey Harrison
  • Charlie West
  • Noah Howes

Who we could offer isn't limited to this - these players might just be the most open to being traded.

I don't actually know if players can refuse to be traded too - can anyone confirm this? I'm for personally working with what the players wants regardless.

Out of the above, in my opinion, we couldn't give up West. We need a FF with Membrey possibly retiring this year and McStay getting older too.

Steene is another must keep. I would also love to hold on to Harrison but we're probably going to have to give up someone decent.

What are your thoughts?

Why do people think Butters is unlikely to nominate us?

Ignoring the fact that Port could match or that he is basically a certainty to be playing for the Bulldogs in 2027, why do some people think that he is unlikely to nominate us?

Personally (and again ignoring the above), I think we're the best option in comparison to Richmond, Geelong and Bulldogs.

  • Immediate premiership contention
  • Estimated 1.8m per year (In the event of a bidding war, I reckon we could go to 2m)
  • Become part of potentially the best midfield combination in the AFL (especially if Lachie Neale signs)
  • Play at the MCG
  • Play alongside Nick during their primes
  • Opposition tagging would be even more difficult, giving him greater freedom to play his best footy
  • Learn from Pendles
  • Play the anzac day game plus the the big freeze
  • Great culture and leadership
  • Great training facilities (including internal sports performance medicine clinic)
  • Play with former team mates (Frampton and Houston)
  • We've been in 3 of the last 4 prelims
  • Club is close to his property in Williamstown (assuming he moves into it)

He is also good friends with Nick and I would assume also at least Houston if not both him and Frampton.

So yeah even though as it stands he is most likely going to the Bulldogs, I am just surprised that some fans think he would never nominate us in comparison to the other 2 options - like why is this so unlikely?

I know he also followed the Bulldogs growing up and his family are big bulldogs fans but I'm still also bit stunned that he wants to go there over Geelong or us.

A family member of mine who also sponsors the Bulldogs has heard that the offer they have put forth is also only 1.5m. I would think they would increase this now, however.

Let's talk trade period.

Other than Lachie Neale, who else should we be pursuing?

Should we look to trade our first or future firsts for someone or take our first to the draft?

What is everyone's thoughts?

Personally I think Neale will be game-changing but not enough to turn the wheel.

Tassie is going to of course impact the draft in the coming years but despite this, I don't want to just hand our picks away for anyone.

Butters is 100% at the dogs next year so he is off the table.

I think we're not getting Butters

I've always thought the Butters race was going to come down to where Butters wants to go and it appears it's not the black and white.

Whilst stumbling around on Youtube before, I saw the below video from a Bulldogs fan podcast.

One of the guys mentioned basically that Zak is a lock for the Bulldogs in 2027, getting that view from whatever he discusses in his catch ups with Zaks Dad in Darley.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMRusvw3Yac

Although it's not a guarantee, I would think this is pretty close to it.

Thoughts on this all?

5.58 minutes in they start talking about Butters.

EDIT: I just realised the guy is Dougie Hawkins former Bulldigs captain too
