Where can I take open-water swim lessons in LA?

I’m looking to start open-water swim lessons in June, ideally on the Westside/Santa Monica area.

I’m an intermediate surfer, but I want to build more confidence in the ocean. I’m an okay swimmer and can handle myself in a pool. I completed a Total Immersion weekend program back in 2017/2018, so I understand the basics of form, breathing, and efficiency.

But swimming laps in a pool and staying calm while waves are breaking on your head are very different things.

I’m looking for an instructor, group, or program that can help with ocean confidence, open-water technique, breathing under stress, comfort in surf, and general safety.

Has anyone taken open-water swim lessons in LA that they’d recommend?

Planning a 4-day surf trip from SoCal down to Northern Baja for mid-May.

I’ve been looking at breaks such as K38, Punta San Miguel, and the Popotla Area.

Big question: where should I stay?

I’m trying to find a town with some kind of vibe/energy, but also one that works well as a home base for hitting a few different breaks.

For context — I’m an intermediate surfer riding a 38L fish, so I’m looking for fun, rippable waves vs anything too heavy or critical.

Curious about:

  • Ensenada — worth staying in, or more of a port/industrial feel?
  • Rosarito — good base or too touristy?
  • Popotla — seems interesting, but not sure what it’s like to stay there?

Open to anywhere with a cool, artistic vibe.

Also would love:

  • Favorite breaks for this kind of setup
  • Any tips for getting around / safety / logistics
  • Fish/shrimp taco recs

Appreciate any insights — trying to keep this trip simple but dialed.
