DIY VE Timing Chain?

Pretty sure my timing chain is on its way out. Do you think I could DIY it? I have done a SOHC timing belt on a Honda before, other than that no prior timing work. I’ve done lots of other engine work and I have a good understanding of everything, I’m just wondering how easy it is to mess up this job on this car. I’ve never worked with a timing chain before and don’t want to blow up my engine but I can’t afford to pay a mechanic. Thanks!

Cold start is dead now..

I recently replaced the timing belt on my EG and it ran perfectly for 2 days before I crashed it into a ditch when the wheel fell off (as you may have seen on my other posts asking for help on this sub lol).

It blows a lot of white smoke during this elongated starting process until it then settles when it finally idles. I can’t see any coolant leaks anywhere. I haven’t checked compression because I don’t have a tester but is that the correct first move, and is there anything else I can check before going out to buy one?

Thanks for your help.

Wheel came off the civic, crashed into a ditch and bent the control arm. The wheel was out of position entirely so I replaced the control arm and wheel. Now it drives straight but the steering feels extremely tough.

Power steering never worked, and now it feels even worse. Tie rods look fine visually, I can’t see any distortion/bends/etc. Same with the steering knuckle. I haven’t gotten an alignment done.

It’s completely normal to steer with the front wheels lifted off of the ground, and when I do drive it (short test drives in the paddock) the wheel doesn’t shake at all. It feels slightly harder to steer towards the bad side (side that took the impact) compared the left side however both sides are bad.

Any ideas? Thanks for the help. I know I post to this sub a lot but you’re really helpful and I’m learning 😂
