Geode eyes

Did a few random bright colors blues/reds DUI where the geodes were. Then TONs of brown, every brown i have went doi. Then when the ice turned clear I threw some raven on top. I wanted the shirt to be black and brown with colors near the sinew. The pink and turquoise that went into the lines washed out pretty quickly, but I'm still pretty happy how it turned out!

Washed these out today.

DOI loose scrunch/no tie with Shiitake and pinch of brushed steel, I like how this one turned out. Kinda wish the back was the front though. Almost looks like a little fox on the bottom right of the back.

DUI deity roll attempt #3 with Blackcherry, orchid, Tangerine, wedgewood blue, and celadon and or parakeet. Like the coloring, but the deity didnt come out too nice. Looks like Charlie day from It's always sunny when he was showing how useful cut off jeans are for doing the splits. I do like the lotus mandala looking pattern around him though. On the back he fell apart and turned into a bird.

Tried to dye a geode bandana with the shiitake and brushed steel, somehow it was placed where it got 25% dye on it so I dropped it in the container collecting the dye and let it sit for a day. It came out with the whites being a little red/pink but unfortunately that washed out instantly. I like the two tone but might drop it in another collection of dye and see what happens.

First two dye attempts after my $50 Marketplace dye haul.

Long process post for the new people and for anyone who wants to help me tweak my process:

Posted last week about my Facebook Marketplace dye haul, didn't want to disappoint so right away I got to it. I learned some things, had some successes, some fails, some anxiety and a ton of fun!

Tried two Tom Smedley deity rolls as my first ever tie dyes. I rolled them both wrong, making both rolls come to the same point instead of two separate points. I realized this after it was tied and soaking in soda ash water, so decided to roll with it. Shirt A was inside out and sleeve folded into sleeve, shirt B was inside out but just folded in half.

Used gutters at an angle with a trash can below to catch any dye. Did dye under ice, came back when it was all melted and covered a few spots where dye hadn't dissolved. Also added more turquoise to the tips because there was still white spots.

Bagged both and put into a tote with a heat pad from the 80s or 90s, I only left it on while at home just in case. Temps stayed 72° when off, 90-95°f when on but one night I woke up and it was 115°.

Washed out the purple at roughly 45hr and the brown after 60hrs. Started cold till clear, then slowly unwrapped while rinsing cold till open and clear. Gradually increased heat till clear. Then threw in containers with dawn and hot water to soak twice till mostly clear(pale blue), then two more soaks with soap and boiling water. This brought out even more dye, possibly too much. Rinsed all the soap out and then ran in the wash together with a light colored towel.

Shirt A: 4, 5, 7, 8 are either swapped or wrong i didn't wite anything down and tried to list from memory.

  1. Turquoise /wasabi

  2. Tangerine

  3. Wasabi

  4. Rust or bronze

  5. Dutch chocolate/rust

  6. Wasabi

  7. Bronze or rust

  8. Bronze or rust

B.

  1. Turquoise

  2. Better Blue Green

  3. Ultraviolet

  4. Turquoise

  5. Tangerine

  6. Nightshade

  7. BBG

  8. Shiitake

I really like how shirt A ended up, great color and a cool design.

Shirt B has wayyy too much green/turquoise than what I was shooting for. Could have definitely did without a turquoise reapply. It got a little muddy below where shirt A kept its pattern all around. That said I really like the purples and plan to redo it with a sliver of turquoise placed somewhere else.

Any suggestions?

Anything in my process seem like wasted time?

Did I over dye?

Should I use more ice? I only did one set of ice with extra ice only added to areas that still had dye that had not dissolved.

Should I bother with boiling water or just call it a day after the hottest hot from the tap bleeds clear?

Both shirts have a few speckles of dye, I think dye condensation drops while batching in ziplocs might of been the cause.

Forgot to add:

Shits are Bella+Craft shirts from the tie dye section at Walmart. I also used a soda ash kit from there for my presoak.
