Possibly a silly question about material.
I only started tie dyeing last year and I’ve gotten great results so far. Having so much fun with it! I started off solely with 100% cotton for the sake of being sure it would work. I recently branched out to allow some more variety (some shirts I get at thrift stores) and I’ve started using rayon and modal. I recently just learned that viscose is a type of rayon that also takes on color well. What else am I missing out on that I can dye? The more fabrics I can work with, the more likely I’ll be able to find clothes at thrift stores to dye so I don’t have to buy all my shirts new online. Are cotton/rayon/modal/viscose all the good materials for ice dye? Or am I missing out on others? With all the blatantly incorrect info google AI is spitting out lately I don’t trust googling anymore. So I came here to ask the pros. It’s ok if those are my only options, I just figured I’d ask in case there are others I’ve missed. Thanks for any advice!
Reposting these for better exposure..
I was not happy with these, but upon further review, I am liking them a lot better, and getting a lot of positive comments, so thank you all..
Sadly now...
Of the three I did last night, this is the only one that came out worth a crap.
Soda ash for ice dyeing
Hi there. Planning my ice dyeing maiden voyage, and I’m wondering if it’s enough to soak my T-shirt in soda ash before dyeing, or if I should also sprinkle some extra on top once I’ve layered on the ice and dye. I’d like a fairly vibrant color. Please advise! Thanks.
Roll #43: shades of blue
Azure, Grecian & Royal. Tried the same fold as my 41, bit I fucked up drawing the curvy line. Ah well, love the blues. 😁
help! color is sooo light and not splitting!
when wet (the darker photo of the bag, it looks decent, but dried it just looks faded 😭 (the small dots are rain drops, just wanted to show bag in outside lighting) i’m making these for charity, 47! of them, the bags were given to me by the organizer they are from amz and claim to be 100 cotton but the handles definitely are not 😑
here are my steps:
Synthrapol wash
soda ash soak 2cups / 2gallons for about four hours and wrung out
my dye colors are dharma split dyes 64 ORCHID and 76 WEDGEWOOD BLUE
im guessing that i probably put too much as the dyes did not split barely at all.
but now they are dry they are just sooo washed out 😭 how do i get the color more vibrant and have them split? open to ice dye and crystal/low immersion dyeing.
also it was very hot during this dyeing process, but will be cooler for the next few days
i am looking for a nice abstraction with beautiful moments. is it possible the bags are not cotton or can i help get more vibrant. i have a lot of them to make that are needed to be ready in 11days. buying new bags is not an option.
these are my color options

Underdye Dreamy Night
Spiraled dry. Flipped upside down, sprayed with soda ash water. Dusted Dreamy Night (went light, 2.5% dye by weight) only from Dyespin. Placed the dusted side down in a muck container. Placed ice around the edges to encourage the ice melt to go up and into the shirt encouraging the different colors to split in travel into the dry shirt. Not a lot of ice. There was no standing water to be seen. Batched outside in 100f for 4 hours and washed.
Picture 3 and 4 show the top of the shirt. The dye you see there traveled from the bottom.
What do you think?
Finally getting the hang of mandalas a little!
Any tips / good videos are greatly appreciated
Pleasantly surprised
Watched lots of videos and finally I made some things I actually really like!
It was a ten shirt and ten onesies (not pictured) kind of day. Washouts and cleanup is going to be a task tomorrow for sure.
Todays washout.
Even with pariah this tie is so hard to get sateration...
Shirt I made for a friend
Had this tied up for a long time and forgot what it was 😂 the diamond mandala was a surprise
Well, let's see what mischief can create with this!
3 unique, mostly unique roll variations of my own. I'm willing to bet they don't come out all that different!
