Has usage of the term “football” changed in Australia?

I grew up in the 90s and I remember how if you use the word "football" to any Australian they would think immediately of either Aussie Rules Football or Rugby League depending on which state you are from.

We always called the round ball game soccer. However, I have increasingly noticed that a lot of young people today are calling soccer football.

This got me thinking- in the 80s and 90s the AFL (and sometimes the NSWRL) would always market themselves simply as "football" or "footy". I remember buying AFL trading cards in the 90s and they were simply sold as "football '90" and the weekly magazine was called "Football Record". Today merchandise is increasingly sold as AFL or NRL branded and very rarely as "football". The weekly magazine is also now "AFL record" and not "football record".

I noticed that a lot of Rugby Union organisations around the world began to drop the name "Rugby Football" a few decades ago, despite being one of the oldest surviving codifications of football on the planet. In Australia, the Australian Rugby Football Union removed “Football” from its name in 2000, and today the sport seems quite comfortable presenting itself simply as “rugby”.

It makes me wonder whether the AFL and NRL are following the same path. Rather than promoting themselves as codes of football, they increasingly market themselves as distinct sports in their own right? If so, has this created the space for soccer to increasingly claim the unqualified term “football” in Australia?
