Onboarding and Start Dates

I accepted an offer last week with a tentative start date in late June. In my onboarding portal, the background check, drug test, and conflict of interest are all green and marked as complete. My US Person Verification is marked as "In Progress" and has one task assigned to HR that is labeled as "Suspended"; I went to my in-person appointment last week.

How likely is it that my tentative state date becomes my actual start date? I'm trying to plan my relocation and putting in my 2 weeks at my current job but it's difficult when I don't know how long onboarding will take.

Should I job-hop?

I am one year out of college. Since graduating, I've been working at a small engineering consulting firm. They are super flexible with remote work and everybody is super nice. However, the benefits and pay aren't great. I'm also worried about not developing in my current role, as the work I've been given hasn't challenged me. It also seems that most people in my role end up as project managers unless they came in with some niche skill already.

I have just received an offer to work for a large and well-known defense contractor. The base pay isn't that much more, and the work is onsite in a slightly higher cost of living area than where I live right now. However, the work seems more interesting, and the benefits are much better. I also think I will have more opportunities to grow since this is a much larger company.

Negotiating Offer

I received an offer for a P1 manufacturing engineering position in CA. They offered a base salary of $86k, no sign-on or relocation. How should I go about negotiating? What are the odds of success?

Salary for P1 Manufacturing Engineer in CA?

What salary should I expect as a P1 manufacturing engineer working in CA? I already have about 1.5 years of full-time work experience (including an internship) in engineering (not manufacturing engineering).

Time to hear back after final interview?

I had an onsite interview this past Thursday. I thought it went pretty well. The managers present were asking me about my preferences, and also explained the benefits in detail. At the end, the HM said that he had a high opinion of me, and that I would hear back soon (apparently they need to discuss where they are placing people). He also answered my thank you email.

When should I expect to hear back? I was kind of hoping to hear back today lol

Time to hear back after final onsite interview?

I had an onsite interview on Thursday. I thought it went pretty good. By the end of it, the different managers present were asking me for my preferences, as they have spots on different teams. The main hiring manager told me that he had had confidence in me, and that he had already thought highly of me before the onsite. He told me that I would hear back soon, and that they just needed to coordinate on their end. He also asked me about my availability and when my lease ended. I sent a thank you email the next day; the HM responded saying he had received all positive feedback and would hopefully talk to me soon.

Do you think I’m leaning towards an offer? And if so, when do you think I’ll hear back?

I applied through a referral, and was able to email my resume directly to the hiring manager. He liked it, asked to chat on a Saturday three days after I applied, and then I had a 30 min zoom interview with the HM and two others. I thought there was only one interview for P1 roles, but two days after my interview the HM texted me and told me that I was moving forward to an onsite interview.

Did they want me to do a 2nd interview because they were lukewarm on me and couldn’t decide?? Or is it because this is a manufacturing role and they want to make sure I like the environment?? I don’t know why they would spend extra time and effort on a 2nd onset interview when they could have made the decision after the first interview??

So I applied to a manufacturing engineering I role a few weeks ago, had a phone call with the hiring manager, and then a virtual panel interview with the HM and two other team members. 2 days after that interview, the HM texted me saying that I was moving forward to an onsite interview.

When I scheduled my first interview with the recruiter, she said that there would most likely be only one interview. When I scheduled my onsite interview, she said she was surprised they were having me do a second onsite round.

Is having two interviews the norm for an entry-level role? I’ve never had to do two interviews before, and definitely not an onsite one that includes a tour and a lunch.
