Why does “entrée” mean the main course in American English when it means a starter in modern French?
I always found this one a little weird. In French, “entrée” refers to a dish served before the main course, which makes sense given that the word literally relates to “entry.”
But in American English, an entrée is usually the main course.
So how did the meanings end up so different? Why did the French and American meanings end up going in different?
