My IUD insertion experience
I wanted to discuss my IUD insertion experience to hopefully provide some clarity for someone because I was a nervous wreck before my insertion. For context I am 35, had one c section almost 2 years ago and was recommended Mirena since I likely will not have anymore children.
My doctor prescribed one hydrocodone pill for me to take 30 minutes before my insertion. I also took 2 ibuprofen pills 45 minutes before the insertion. I did some research the night before and a lot of people suggested a paracervical block which helps with the pain with injections into the cervix. This was a game changer and Im glad that I did this because it numbed my cervix. When I tell you the pain was maybe 2/10 and quick. I will say that my pain tolerance is high but this experience was so much more tolerable and I’m so glad that I did it because I was going to cancel. I also had to get a Bartholin's cyst drained during that appointment which I did after the IUD insertion. The cyst was drained and a catheter was inserted. It was also pretty much painless.
Im a week out and I feel fine. I am cramping now since I am due to start my period tomorrow. I feel more cramps now then I did the day of my insertion. Overall my experience was much better than I expected and that was because I did research and discussed pain management with my doctor. I truly believe that the paracervical block made the difference. I said all of this to encourage everyone to do research and to advocate for yourselves because your pain should be managed. Feel free to ask any questions.
