Pain Prevention suggestions

I (30F) get my first iud next week. Doc prescribed Valium and something to help dilate my cervix. I have some ketoralac and oxy left over from a kidney surgery.

I know you can take a Valium and ketoralac together but the oxy id have to take by itself. I have a pretty decent pain tolerance never any issues during paps, so should I take the Valium by itself, the Valium and ketoralac, or just the oxy to prep? Any suggestions or experiences would be helpful.

To add, I’ve never taken a Valium so I have no idea how it’s going to affect me.

can anyone with vaginismus share their experience with kyleena insertion?

what the title says — i am pretty sure i have vaginismus, and i am feeling really scared for my appt tomorrow. my previous doctor who did an exam on me a few years ago when i brought up this issue was really careless with the whole thing and it was a painful and kind of traumatic experience which doesn’t help!

i plan on explaining my past with medical examinations and asking for numbing and laughing gas, but my friend said laughing gas did nothing for her

any comments on advice or experiences are appreciated!

failed insertion; sedation experiences?

I am a 19yo who has entered into a pretty committed relationship, but never been on birth control before, so decided after a bunch of research to get a copper IUD.

So, I go in (after waiting like a month and a half, f- you Kaiser), to do so. I've never given birth or anything (obviously) so they say it might be difficult in terms of dilation but we start. I took a ton of Ibuprofen before this under their instructions. They also did a numbing spray.

He puts in the speculum which was not painful really, just a bit weird, and then starts with the other things like the tenaculum and then the dilator. These hurt A LOT. The pressure was overwhelming and I was almost screaming in pain. Then he started the actual insertion and as soon as that started I passed out. I woke up a few seconds later to the nurse and my BF over me, and the doctor asked if I wanted the tools removed. Immediately I said yes. He said that the IUD didn't stay in place when it was attempted to be deployed and that my cervix was very tight.

Then for the next half hour or so I laid in the office in severe debilitating pain. I think this was my uterus contracting. It was awful. Genuinely the most pain I've ever experienced. My BF was comforting me it was just awful. It did go away though after that half hour, mostly, and so just mild cramping for the rest of the day along with just the weird and sad feeling of the procedure not working and how invasive it was.

All this to say, this is nothing that could happen to you, so I just want my experience out there. It was the word pain that I have EVER felt. And I never want anyone to have to feel that or for me to have to feel that again.

Also, I still want an IUD but ONLY if I can be sedated while it is inserted, so I would love to hear any experiences you have with that. I am trying to go through Kaiser but they are taking forever, so I may go to Planned Parenthood instead.

IUD moved by MC?

I just got a kyleena like about two weeks ago and about a week after i got it i tried a menstrual cup for the first time and didn’t like it so stopped after that time. What’s the percentage of possibility that the suction from the cup dislodged my iud? Also I’m not sure how far up my cervix would be my OB just kept saying i would feel it and didn’t give me an estimated distance. I feel like i’m being super paranoid but i think it’s always better to be safe than sorry lol.

Liletta hormonal IUD

Hey! I am a 24f. I just wanted to come on this forum and see if anyone else is or has ever experienced any of the following symptoms I have while on Liletta. I had my daughter Nov of 2021 and was given the option of having the IUD inserted. I was 20 yrs old and did not want to have another baby anytime soon, so it seemed like the best thing to do since I had just given birth, and I didn't want to experience IUD insertion at my 6 months pp appointment. I had never been on any form of BC before this.

After insertion I had ppd (didn't even think it may have been the IUD causing said mood swings) I bled for about 4/6 months straight. I didn't have a period for about a year after this. Then randomly I started having very LIGHT 4-day periods like clockwork every 26/28 days. I started to experienced anxiety April' 25 (first time having physical symptoms). Long story short I had no idea how to manage said anxiety and went down to a family clinic in my neighborhood. The provider prescribed the wrong medication for my person (Duloxetine generic for Cymbalta) I had an adverse reaction then for months I experienced withdrawals from the medication. I took therapy and just buckled down for dear life- finally started to feel like myself maybe 6 months after the incident. Prior to this I had never experienced any anxiety, and I had never taken any medication for my mental health. I was desperate to feel like myself again so I trusted the Dr and took said meds.

At my last gyno appt last year - which was the 4-year mark for my Liletta I asked my OBGYN Dr if I had to remove it in 2026 since when it was inserted, I was told it would only be good for 5 years. The provider then explained that new research came out and it is now good at preventing pregnancies for up to 8 years instead of 5, it would be my decision if I choose to remove it or not. Fast forward to this year around Feb I started to have new PMS symptoms:

Week before my period I am emotional, my anxiety pops up more frequently, I feel meh, I get overwhelmed easily, I have acne, back pain, cramps and fatigue. When I ovulate, I have back pain, cramping, nausea, and I get emotional. Prior to Feb I wasn’t really experiencing any PMS symptoms really OR if I did, they weren’t this intense. I have also been experiencing more frequent headaches but they only last seconds and they're around my eyebrows (not sure if related) and acne around my chin and cheeks around cheekbone area. I would have breast pain the week before my period and maybe be emotional a day or to two before my period but that was it. Today my Liletta is 4.5 years old (lol)I’m just curious if anyone experienced any of these symptoms around this time frame of having a Liletta?

Extreme bleeding almost a year after insertion

I’m just curious if anyone else has experienced anything similar. This is not meant to scare anyone out of getting it, I really like mine! I think my body just does not like it much lol.

I have had my Mirena IUD for 8 months, and I’d been doing very well with it. The reason I had it placed was for heavy periods and severe cramping.

Once I had it inserted, everything went very well! I had very light spotting for maybe 2-3 weeks and it was so light that I didn’t even really need a pad or anything. My periods were lighter, though 7 days instead of my prior 4, and the cramping was minimal. I was annoyed that my period never went away like how it does for some people, but I’ll take what I can get.

About a month ago, my period started. It was normal, that was around the time I was supposed to get it, and the 7 days came and went, and my period just sort of never stopped. It was definitely light after the week, but it wasn’t light enough to go without a pad or tampon in.

2 days ago, my cramps came back full force like how they used to pre-IUD. I put in a tampon and went about my business, but less than an hour later I noticed I had bled through my underwear and my shorts. I thought I put the tampon in wrong or something but nope, it was completely 100% full.

I thought it was weird, but changed to a pad, changed pants, and continued on. Again, an hour later, the pad is full and I bled through my pants again.

I changed again and while I was changing, two golf ball sized blood clots came out. That was a bit scary, because I’d definitely had my fair share of large clots with my heavy periods before my IUD, but these were bigger.

I decided I’d send a message to my doctor the next day (yesterday) since it was currently Sunday so they were closed. I woke up on Monday, went to work, and sent the message.

A few hours go by and I noticed my bleeding had completely stopped, which was super weird, but I won’t complain about it. That was until about lunch time, and I ran to the bathroom because I thought I was peeing my pants out of nowhere, but that’s not what was happening. Two more golf ball sized clots came out and blood was continuing to drip out at a constant rate.

I realized the one pad that I brought as a “just in case” was not going to be enough for the next 4 hours, so I sent a message to my boss while he was out having lunch and said I was going to work from home the rest of the day. I didn’t even wait for him to respond, I just left. (He was totally fine with it and didn’t ask questions thankfully)

I decided the message I sent that morning was not going to get answered and I called the nurse line for my doctor’s office. I explained all of this and she was VERY concerned. “How long have you been bleeding since?” “April 21st” “and how many pads are you going through a day?” “One per hour, and if I don’t keep up I bleed through everything” “and how many large blood clots have you had?” “Four in the last 24 hours” so she marked my message as high priority and passed it to my doctor.

My doctor called me and basically said “how fast can you get here?” so I told my boss I had to log off for the day and booked it to the doctor. I told her everything in more detail, and she said I needed to do blood work to see if I was anemic and do an ultrasound to see if the IUD had moved out of position. This doctor’s office is super nice because they have everything there. If you can think it, they probably have a space for it, so I didn’t have to make any separate appointments.

Blood work was standard, nothing crazy happened there. The ultrasound was a bit wild. I’ve had both types of ultrasound where they go on your abdomen and also where they go inside (I think it’s called transvaginal?) and they put down SO many pads for me to sit on, and some on the floor as well. I ended up bleeding onto the floor and all over these pads, bled through the pads onto their table that was covered with a fabric, which I feel so awful about lol. When it was done I was given a towel to wipe everything everywhere that the gel was and then sent me back to my doctor. That room looked like a crime scene when I left.

I talked to the doctor and she said she hasn’t seen my ultrasound come in yet, but my blood work is normal and I’m not anemic. I personally noticed that my platelet count was on the lower end of the normal range, but it’s still normal and she didn’t mention it so I’m not concerned, just thought it was ironic with all the clotting I’m doing for whatever reason. She then prescribed me estrogen pills to take to get the bleeding to stop, and if it doesn’t stop then I have to get the IUD taken out. If the ultrasound comes back abnormal and the IUD moved, I will definitely need it taken out and I don’t even need the estrogen pills. She’s also going to look out for a fibroid that was discovered last year shortly before the IUD was placed that I haven’t heard any more about since finding out it was there.

As of right now I haven’t heard about my ultrasound yet, and it’s the middle of the night and I can’t sleep because every time I shift position I bleed an insane amount.

I really appreciate if you’ve read this far, and if this sounds like something you went through, could you let me know your experience and what ended up happening? I figured it had something to do with my mystery fibroid but I guess I’ll update this post once I hear back!!

TLDR: Mirena IUD. 4 golf ball sized blood clots in 24 hours and nonstop bleeding for a month, heaviest in the last 2-3 days. Doctor did blood work (normal) and ultrasound (waiting to hear back).

Update: soooooo I got the ultrasound results back and apparently my IUD was hanging outside of my cervix. I had felt for the strings last week and didn’t feel anything off so I have no idea what happened or why it happened, but it happened. I ended up getting an appointment today to get the old one removed and get a new one replaced. Once it was placed the doctor and I thought the bleeding would stop, but it didn’t. She said give it a few days and it should calm down. I went home and about an hour later I felt a big cramp, a huge gush of blood, and suddenly my IUD was on the floor wrapped in a large blood clot. So I called the doctor and she said no more IUDs for me which really sucks because it’s the only method of birth control that has controlled my periods without making me gain weight. I’m so incredibly heartbroken because I feel like I’m just destined to be miserable every month. But I guess on the bright side, at least the heavy bleeding has stopped!

IUD removal mirena

I am getting my IUD removed this coming Thursday, May 21. I’m pretty nervous about it. I am 25 no kids. All of the ultrasounds throughout the years that I’ve had my IUD have said it was in good placement and everything however the strings disappeared. I assume they’re just in my cervix. Any tips on how I can prepare for this? My doctor claims it’s not going to be painful. However I have a feeling it’s going to be awful. Getting it get inserted my doctor give me something to dilate my cervix and told me to take pain medication before. Insertion was no problem minor cramping after along with a little bit of pressure, but that’s about it.

As well as what can I do to help get my hormones back on track post removal? What was your period like after you’ve had your IUD removed? Was it better or worse?

Any tips or tricks and advice would be very much appreciated.

Irregular bleeding/spotting - 9 months w/ Kyleena

So I got my Kyleena IUD last August while I was on my period and the first couple of weeks were painful but the pain started to diminish. It took some weeks until it completely stopped bleeding altogether (it was heavy at first but then spotting on and off for +6 weeks) then it got a bit more regular but almost the same, I have my regular period, and have spotting for 2 more weeks so I’m not bleeding for only one week every month. It’s annoying. I’ve also gained 5 kg on it which is not going away even though I track my calories and workout regularly.

In January I had some pain during sex and cramps and bloating and checked with my doctor and she said it’s a cyst - common with hormonal IUDs and she prescribed some meds and it got better and said my IUD is still adjusting and adapting to my body. But in a few months we can check again. I do enjoy the fact that I can have sex without being worried about pregnancy but the bleeding and being bloated in my belly and the weight I’ve gained do not sit well with me. I’ve heard people saying they stopped getting their periods after their IUD but I’m spotting all the time.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I’m thinking of waiting for a full year and then deciding if I want it or not.

Feeling sooooo much better mentally after Kyleena IUD removal

It’s been a couple of weeks since I got my Kyleena IUD removed due to suspicions it was taking a serious toll on my mental health and turns out … it was! It feels like a black cloud has been lifted honestly. The sense of deep dark sadness and emptiness I’ve had for over a year and four months (which started maybe two months after the insertion) is gone, I am no longer crying every day or having intense anger outbursts or mood swings! I no longer think I hate my poor Fiance. I’m feeling much more connected to myself and life and back to normal. The positive effects were almost instant although maybe that was in my head lol. But I really am feeling so much happier and brighter and more like me. So if you’re having similar feelings about the IUD and your mood and you can’t quite pin it on anything else / nothing seems to help, get that sucker out! It really doesn’t seem to suit some of us. Which is a shame because I wanted it to work so bad. As a form of BC I think it’s amazing and so convenient. It just was not friends with my brain or body at all. Also a big FU to the doctor who made me feel crazy and tried to push me into going on anti depressants/anti anxiety meds when I went in to discuss my concerns about the two being connected, and thank you to the women’s clinic I went to instead who validated me!

I might’ve misplaced my IUD with a menstrual disc a week after getting it inserted😭

Yep got my copper IUD inserted last Monday and it made my period come 4 days early which has never happened. It was as everyone says really painful cramps and heavier flow. Before this I was an avid cup user but I knew cups were absolutely not to be used with an iud but I read that the disc was okay because it didn’t suction. Howeverrrrr when I took it out it hurt like a bitch even though I knew to take it out super slow and carefully. I went to feel the strings and it felt like one reallyyy long one. Sooo I think I did displace it. It also hurt really bad to sit on the toilet but I just took a dump and now it doesn’t hurt? Idk I’m still gonna go to the clinic tomorrow to get it checked out but does anyone know if I can just get another plopped back up in there right after getting one removed?

I got an IUD today, it was awful

I did everything I could to prep before hand, took stuff to soften my cervix, and took 800mg Motrin and a Xanax.

I ended up having to get 3 lidocaine shots bc I was still feeling shit after 2, and it felt like my cervix was being pierced. I was screaming so much that I was scaring other patients, I was bawling my eyes out.

I was digging my nails into myself to stop the pain I was feeling, and my chest and shoulders are so torn up from it. I am covered in nail marks.

I almost quit after the measuring part but decided to go through since I was so close.

It's been 6 hours since I got it and I've been having the most painful excruciating cramps I have ever felt, they are so bad that they are making me cry from the pain. Im cramping so hard that its making me nauseous and I've almost thrown up multiple times, and I also have emetophobia. I even had to have my bf pull over on the way home so I could dry heave out the car

My mom thankfully was with me since she works there, and said she has never seen someone take an IUD this badly before.

So far this whole experience has been hell for me and I would never do this again even if someone paid me.

intense cramping during/after exercise?

hi! I got my minera IUD changed 3 weeks ago and after some serious pain for a day or two, it’s settled down nicely all things considered.

however I go to the gym about 4 times per week and on a few occasions now I’ve had really intense cramping during or slightly after strength training. I don’t know if it has anything to do with how i’m positioned or how I’m tensing, but it’s a solid 7-8/10 pain. No spotting through, which is a bit odd?

Anyway I just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience and has any tips on how to make it stop? as you’d expect, it’s really putting me off my workouts at the minute :/

Thanks in advance <3

My Cervix ate one of my IUD strings

I was planning on getting my iud out a couple weeks ago and when my midwife went to take it out she said, " I've never seen this before, but it looks like one of the string has embedded itself in the cervix"..... say what now. I have been referred to a surgical OBGYN and have the appointment set up. I, of course, after finding this out, proceeded to look it up online. I can only find one article on it and that it's super rare 😭😭😭😭. But of course, the rare shit happens to me, I'll keep yall updated on what they do to me. I just hope they numb me and don't have to put me under general to get it out.

Should I get an IUD? And which one?

Hi, I’m from Poland (24F) and the topic here about IUD is still… nonexistant? A taboo? I mean, most of my friends don’t know that even something like that is out there.
I only use condoms with my bf but we started to talk about investing in IUD, because it’s described on the internet as some kind of a miracle device, but I’m kinda scared that it will mess up my hormones (and I don’t want to get a nonhormonal one cuz I read a lot of horror stories about getting more painful and more bloody menstruation after that one and I already have pretty bad menstruation in those aspects).
I went to my ob/gyn to get more information about IUD but she only said that inserting it hurts (wow so very informative).

So what’s your opinion about IUD? And what IUD do you recommend? I just want this as a form of anticonception. Beside that I’m healthy, that’s why I’m scared that hormonal ones will change a lot in my body. I hate any kind of interference in my body so I’m scared and don’t know if it’s worth it. And if it is, then which IUD should I choose.

Cramping after sex

I just recently got the Kyleena iud about 2 months ago. I’ve seen a lot of people saying the cramps are the worst part which is honestly so true. I was wondering if anyone else experienced more cramps when they have sex? After sex my cramps get worse for like entire day afterwards

Just got an IUD. Still getting cramps and feeling weird. When will things start feeling "normal" again? Tips & experiences pls

I had Kyleena inserted about three days ago. I had a very emotionally tough day before my appointment which made the insertion quite the unpleasant experience in comparison to what I expected. I had taken both ibuprofen and paracetamol before the procedure and the doctor put some numbing spray in the area as well but I felt everything and kept having very intense cramps for the rest of my doctors visit (removed Nexplanon too) and throughout the rest of the day. The next day the cramps were somewhat better but gotten worse at times. Of course they were way more manageable than day 1. On day 3 today, I still keep having the random intense cramp (without any painkillers) and I wonder, will the cramps ever end?

My body still feels awkward, weird and somewhat violated in a way that I didn't feel with Nexplanon and of course I have no mood for sex or anything of the kind. How long did it take you to go back to your regular sex routines? And do you have any tips for me or things to be careful of in the beginning as more experienced IUD users?

I am also wondering about things like will orgasming feel different/painful? Will intercourse/fingering feel weird and will it get better?

Insertion Day! Yikes, Day 1

I know the title ending in “Yikes” is probably alarming. But I wanted to start this thread today to share my experience but also be able to come back to update as the days go by. It was uncomfortable but doable.

Note: IUD for heavy menstruation and VERY Low Iron stores that cannot be improved after years of Iron pills.

I had my appointment today at 3:30pm
I was CRAZY nervous especially after reading all the Reddit posts, comments and threads.

It’s been a little over 1 hr since the procedure
I took 2 Extra Strength Advils one hour before. Got to my appt, forgot my healthcard, but they took me anyways at the local hospital. Got to the waiting room. They didn’t have me on their list. It was all kind of chaos. But they took me anyways.

I changed. I got on the surgical gurney.
I told them how nervous I was. She said it’s understandable and it is going to hurt but everyone tolerates it differently and it’ll be super quick. The nurse Barbara was kind and took my anxious sarcasm with stride, she humoured me very well. Lol
She was surprised I knew the names of every piece of equipment that was being used..

She started with the spectulum
Cleaned the cervix
Put on the Tenaculum
- all that was pretty manageable actually.
Then told me she was going to do the measurement now (sounding)
WOWZERS! I kicked my legs and the spectulum went shooting out.. and the Dr goes “oh oh, you can’t do that.” I said it wasn’t intentional lol. She said she knows then asked the nurse for a larger speculum and had to start all over.
Again, same steps, certainly some pain and a lot of pressure then back to the measurement . Again very uncomfortable but I beared through it and immediately after the Mirena went in.
Honestly, the IUD itself going in (for me) was the worst part. Measurement, second worse but the second time wasn’t as bad as the first but I think it’s because I knew what to expect when she went to do it again.

Part of me feels like the scariest part is not knowing what to expect. Don’t get me wrong, the pains and discomfort ARE real and different for everyone. But the unknown makes it the scariest. And all of us running to social media I’m sure makes it worse.
Truthfully. 95% of any review you read is going to be negative. Very few will jump on and give a positive or “relatively” positive review. I’m not saying mine is either positive or negative at this point. It’s been too short of time to really say. Who knows what the days ahead have in store for me..

I’ve been home now and had this for 90mins.
I have cramping (which is foreign to me as I never had painful periods) so I’m not loving that, forgot what cramps feel like.
But it’s uncomfortable and the cramping is right through my abdomen, hips and the tops of my thighs. Sucks, but “so far” manageable to this point. See what the days ahead bring.

But what’s bugging me the most right now is this “itchy/burny” feeling in my V-canal right down to the opening. That is ANNOYING and I hope that goes away super quick.
Anyone else have this feeling?

I also feel gassy and like I need to make a B-movement.. but haven’t actually gone yet. As a matter of fact I haven’t peed or been to the washroom yet either.

Anyhow, I will try and keep updating as the days goes on.

If anyone has some post-insertion advice. Would be greatly appreciated. For me and for anyone who eventually ends up reading this.

Hopefully back with updates soon.
