I hate working here

I wanna start this off by saying I am only working here to get through college and because it pays like a dollar more than any other entry level jobs in my area. So I cannot just quit.

So it’s company policy now that we cannot ask “yes or no” questions. For example; I cannot ask parents “did we wanna add any scents, heartbeats or lights today?” I have to ask the kids “what kinda smell did we want to add? And which kind of fun heart (heartbeat/light)did you want to add?” Like I’m not even allowed to let the parents have a say in the matter lol. They also want me to force people to give me their emails at checkout. My coworkers have started saying “you need to give me an email if you want a receipt” but that is not true whatsoever.

I still ask yes or no questions, and I never force people to give me their emails, but I have been given warnings and told I’ll be written up if it continues. It doesn’t feel good to manipulate parents into adding items into their child’s’ bear, because most of the time getting the bear itself is expensive enough. I don’t think it’s fair for me to try and force people to spend money when I don’t know their financial situation. It’s not easy for me as a 19 year old who’s spending my paychecks on college to just throw away money on a bear. So why would I force other people to do the same thing, when I don’t know if they can afford it or not?

I like the parts of this job that are solely focused on making people’s day a little better. I really love working with people and try my best to give them a good experience. But I just feel yucky working here when I know that the company I am working for doesn’t care about the experience, the workers, or the customers. They only care about money. I know that is how most retail companies are, but it’s still upsetting.

My manager changes my schedule without telling me

Today was my day off for the entire week, and I got a text from my assistant manager saying that I was scheduled. I knew for a fact I was not scheduled because last week my assistant manager asked me to cover someone’s shift today since I was not on the schedule, and I told them no. I told them this and my assistant manager said “oh yeah the manager changes the schedule without telling anyone sometimes, but don’t tell anyone I told you that.” I know that had I not said anything, my assistant manager would just act like I was in the wrong and forgot. I don’t know what to do.

Another issue is that it is company policy to get a 10 min paid break every 4 hours, but my store refuses to do so because it is not required in the state I live in.

Is this reason enough to quit? I’ve worked here a year before, quit, and joined back just because I really needed money. I’d feel bad quitting a couple months back in, but I don’t know if I can do this. I have college and exams and I cannot deal with this.
