Do Japanese people naturally think of themselves by their first name or last name?

Hey guys! I have been a little curious so far about how Japanese people naturally think about their own names. I’m a writer, and I’ve been trying to learn more about Japanese culture so I can write a Japanese character’s POV more naturally. Recently, though, I’ve run into something I’m not quite sure about during my practices. In your everyday life, what feels more natural after being addressed with it for so long? Your first or last name? Which is more natural and the most personal to you?

The reason this came up is because I am confused about it in general. From what I understand, people in Japan often address others by their family name, especially if they aren’t particularly close. Whereas their given names are more commonly used by family members, close friends, or people you have a more personal relationship with. Because of that, it made me wonder how this affects the way you think about your own name.

For example, since I am an American, and people always called me using my first name for as long as I remembered, it became more natural for me to use my first name when introducing myself such as "Hi, my name is Alex.". The name used isn't my real name, just a placeholder example. So yeah, how does it work for you guys? For example, if someone asked, “What’s your name?” what would naturally come to mind first? What feels more natural to you? Would you think of your family name because that’s what many people call you in everyday life? Or does your given name feel more personally like your first name, even if fewer people actually call you by it?

I’m also curious about writing a character’s internal thoughts. If a Japanese character were thinking about themselves or their identity, would their given name generally feel more personal to them, or is that not really how Japanese people think about their names at all? I know this probably varies depending on the person, age, setting, and relationships, so I’d especially like to hear about your personal experience rather than just the formal rules around Japanese names.

Thank you!

Can someone explain the L80 universe for me in order to help me figure out an idea regarding an L80 Sanae variant?

Hey guys! So, I have been writing a fanfiction so far where I’ve been exploring Sanae's powers and how they interact with the Touhou Lost Word universe. I’ve always been fascinated by her powers-especially since learning that they can grant miracles and all that type of stuff. This has led me to think-what if, somehow, as a kid, she did something in her dreams using her powers that led to a reversal of the Lost Word universe where the effects were greatly lessened? It would be a massive butterfly effect story where she did something at the time that she believed was really small, but that would become the exact opposite once she goes to Gensokyo herself after graduating high school.

The main idea is that while the Lost Word crisis is still going to happen in a way, all the Sanae variants don’t really lose their world yet, though some of the Mastermind’s worlds do get lost because of the nature of how the Lost Word works. It doesn’t get as bad as in canon, but the main goal is that everyone in universe must figure out what's going on and how to prevent the incident from getting out of control. They would be starting from a much better spot though everything is going to be far more mysterious.

I know that Sanae learns her abilities through her family, I think, according to the wiki, and I plan to have her massive spiritual potential and determination-including the way she learned how to perform miracles during her training-be what causes her to use her abilities in a really realistic dream one day to instictively do something. She has been receiving dreams of a mysterious figure ever since she was young, and because of something that happened to her with it where it formed a big positive impression on her, she has grown desperate ever since to make contact with it. When she finally does this is what triggers everything that follows for my Lost Word plot.

I ran into a problem though. As I was writing, I realized that ever since researching how most L80s follow a closed fate, it might not be possible. Can someone explain that to me and maybe offer ways to make my idea work? I don't really know what a closed fate means in this context. Thank you!

Does anyone know how the total power is calculated for each character?

I am a little confused on this, because the total stats combined for L80 Yukari doesn't match the total power - which is 7575. The added stats were way higher.

The reason I am doing this is because I have been trying to create custom stats for a character from Touhou Lost Word--since I have been developing their profile for fun. I am writing a character for the story I am developing, and basing their stats upon the game's stats using character data as reference. Been trying to figure out if my stats would match realistically.

These are the stats of the character I have imagined so far variant wise for L80 Sanae, the character I am writing:

Total Power: 8150 | Cost: 12

Lv 100/100

HP: 6200

Agility: 1500

Yang ATK: 2300

Yang Def: 1250

Yin ATK: 1900

Yin DEF: 1150

It is a little difficult to figure out if I am close since the potential total power for my theory crafting story wise is meant to represent a variant of L80 Sanae I made. Thank you!

Why do most alarm apps on Microsoft Store only have seven days of a week, not the whole month?

I have been searching for a decent alarm app that could help me keep track of things better. While I do use alarm apps for my iphone, none of them has any alarms that could allow me to set up a date way further into the month like the 30th of July. That's why I am searching for some sort of app that could remind me further out in the month as I work. I get pretty busy and easily lose track of time, so something like that is important to me.

One thing I have noticed though, is that most alarm apps for the microsoft score only go from Monday-Sunday. Is there a reason for that?

Thank you!

Can anyone here give me advice regarding the company Dev 10 and their process?

Hey everyone! I have been researching lately about a company named Dev 10, and I am a little confused still despite looking at the other posts in this community. I know that apparently you have to pay 35k to them if you leave early, but this concerns me a bit. Because, from what I seen, a bunch of people are also saying that HR is laying off people during the training. And after it's over, they could do it to you even after you relocated.

Is this company worth it or not for a person who just graduated college and is struggling to get into roles for someone who wants to get into the IT field? I am worried especially about the layoffs HR is doing, and suddenly being potentially hit with that fee. Considering what I seen about what HR there is doing, and they decide to lay me off during that training, is it possible that you have to pay that 35k too or nah?

Thank you!

Advice Needed for a New College Graduate. Need some help to figure out which certifications should be worth looking into, and what should be done next.

Hey everyone, I need some help getting some clarity regarding the path I should be taking. I was not able to secure any internships during college, and I did not build many personal projects because I was focused on passing my classes. It was mostly team projects I have in my github, though unfortunately I can't seem to easily access it anymore. Given my situation, which certifications do you think would be most helpful? What else could be useful for me to use in the stage of my career right now?

So, for context, I graduated from college about six months ago and I am currently trying to figure out which certifications could help me break into the IT industry. During my college courses, I really enjoyed learning how to build websites and found myself much more interested in both backend and frontend work. Although my JavaScript skills are not very strong, I am much more comfortable working with HTML and CSS.

Since graduating, I have been trying to understand what I should focus on to become more competitive and move toward my goal of becoming a full stack developer. While researching the job market, I noticed that many entry level roles seem to require experience with AWS and technologies like .NET. This has left me a bit confused. For someone in my position, which certification would be more valuable? Should I focus on AWS certifications like the Solutions Architect certification, or something like Azure Fundamentals? Or is it better that I do personal projects?

I have always wanted to do a To Do List with some personal custom features to manage my ADHD, but that doesn't seem related to my main goal of being a web developer at all...

Thank you!

Can anyone point me in the right direction for identifying the correct salary range for entry level software engineering jobs?

Hey everyone! I am a recent college grad, and I have been trying to research the basic salary for someone just starting out into the tech field. I have been searching all over recently for accurate salary ranges, and I am unsure still what is a realistic range for someone who has graduated with no internships or actual work experience? I know the basic one for normal people is 70k and above at most, but I am not so sure what it means for people like me.

Thanks!

How does one avoid using the word thoughts in deep pov?

Hey guys! I have been struggling a bit with this one, trying to figure out good ways to do this without overusing the word thoughts. I try to do it in a non intrusive immersive way, but everytime I read my own work as an author and reader I just cant think of any other way to not use that word since its so noticeable!

Heres an example of a practice I been working on:

Her skin feeling warm again, she continued her vibrant and loud thoughts that were full of smugness with an air of superiority around her.

This is what I am talking about. How does one maintain the confident energy and anticipation for what she is going to think next without saying the word ‘thoughts’ constantly from previous paragraphs?

Any books I should be reading too so I could study how to maintain excitement and mystery with body actions? I feel as if I am lacking as of late with the issues I am encountering, trying to do that eince the body actions I do just seems to kill all tension I built up earlier instead of creating it.

What exactly is it about stream of conciousness thinking in a POV that removes the stiffness of seeing multiple action tags at once? I dont get it.

This is something that I have been seeing across my writing that I dont understand. Everytime I come across the issue of too many action tags in a short paragraph, it becomes far too noticeable and stiff. But for some reason adding a POV characters thoughts fixes the issue and makes it barely noticeable??

Here is some examples I written for general purposes only.

  1. Action Tag Only

Jake smiled at Sarah. He winked at her and proposed to her again. Sarah screamed at him in disgust.

  1. Action Tag with Stream of Conciousness

Clark looked at the two idiots before him that was making a mess of their apartment once again, the arguements starting anew. He was so tired of this. He stood there, hearing the shouting get louder. There they go again, making a big deal out of something so simple… the dry thought left him. He let out a long, frustrated sigh—removing his glasses and making his fingers pinch the bridge of his nose.

Couldn’t Jake and Sarah have their love quarrel somewhere else? Preferably somewhere that wasn’t within earshot of him. Jake was a close childhood friend of his, and they grown pretty close because of both of their fathers introducing them to the other as kids. They hit it off pretty well back then due to finding some unexpected interests they both had, and that was why he was willing to even entertain all this in the first place.

Can anyone help me identify why number 2 removes so much stiffness? I dont teally get it. Thank you!

Is it possible to use the Ring of Fate on characters that aren’t L1’s?

I just want to double check because I am trying to figure out how to use the Ring of Fate on L80 Sanae. I have everything maxxed except just one last skill I need to upgrade. However, I expected something like the RE stuff to appear once I get close to that. Am I right or wrong that it would be possible to use the ring on her like this or is it an L1 exclusive thing?

Is there any other way to avoid repetitive words for showing how words come out of a person? I dont know what else to do than write all the time sentences like “Bob’s voice trembled with fear.”

This is a problem I am having a rough time trying to figure out how to get rid of, especially without using pronouns or placeholders constantly like He/She/His/Her. I know its possible to potentially avoid using the repetitive word “voice” , but I dont really know how I can consistently do that.

I did figure out you can use the environment to show how the words come across to establish the mood as well as body movements—but aside from that I dont know what else to do. Only figured this out recently and I am trying to get helpful advice and references.

How do tatami rooms work? I am conducting research for a writing project featuring feudal Japan.

Hey guys! I have been trying to incorporate a good visual in my writing for a normal storage closet in a Japanese shrine, and I have ran into some problems trying to figure out how to describe a small tatami room. The main issue is that I cant seem to figure out if a shoji door could be considered a window? I just dont know how I could put it in and introduce the blue skies and sunny day that way, since I want to show an open shoji door into the outside world and those features. It doesnt seem right to use the basic window term from modern houses though.

Is my idea accurate to life? Some advice would be helpful! Thank you!

Why is it so important to have first hand experiences such as real life body sensations and environmental details when it comes to writing immersive stories? Why do you want to experience character's emotions as your own?

One thing I noticed when writing immersive stories is that if I include these things in, my brain could far better visualize the scene the characters are in. Without any of them along with other sensory details, it is as if my brain just shuts out the believability and realism aspect because I am forced to constantly question things.

When I don't question my own plot and I don't see any plot holes I easily get sucked into the stories world. However, this has caused me to come to a confusing situation. Why is it that you need to experience other character's emotions and feelings as your own to even achieve that immersion? If that character is so different then your own life experience how is it possible for author's to make reader's with completely different life experiences want to root for that character? Thank you!

Can anyone help me identify these muscles according to this book?

Hey everyone! I am just starting to get into drawing again for my goal of one day being able to make anime characters. However, I ran into a little bit of a mess. I have recently bought the book Figure Drawing for all its worth, and I can't for the life of me figure out what the heck number 7 and 8 here means. They are located at the bottom right side of the page and I am lost.

Thanks everyone! Also, are there any tips you guys think could help me since I am just starting out learning about figure drawing? I am feeling somewhat lost with the whole process and I don't really feel as if watching youtube tutorials all the time is going to help. The main goal is to be able to make accurate life sized body figures eventually.

How do you know when a rebound can really come about in highly volatile stocks-or in general stocks really?

Hey folks! I am a new trader who has been studying how the stock market works and became interested in it because of meme stocks. That was how I started, and recently, after losing a little money I can afford to lose due to how volatile and stagnant they can be at times, I am trying to figure out how to avoid the worst-case scenario again. For now, I am just doing paper trades to avoid worrying about real losses anymore and on the search for normal stocks.

This brings me to my question: With stocks like these, how can you figure out which ones are likely to continue dipping sharply after a big hit? On the other side, what about when a stock dips 8% or more but you cannot tell in the moment whether it could get worse? It's so hard in the moment because I can never tell even knowing the companies directory. I keep on thinking that somehow it would recover only to get screwed later. I know that volume can help as well as average price range, though I don't really know how exactly a low or high volume(including P/E) could indicate a rebound in that moment.

I am pretty curious because all of this fascinates me, and any advice or ways to figure this out faster would be super helpful! I have no idea what factors matter when evaluating a normal stock, and I have been reading more to prevent repeating past mistakes. I have been using stop losses alot more for sure for sure.

Thanks!

Hey guys! I have no idea what's going on, but recently Mistral AI is giving me lots of problems--particularly in the file uploads. Before, I could easily just upload files without problem and have the ai analyze what I wrote. I have some nsfw stories I am writing that I uploaded(doc is 430 kb) that it flagged as "Content may contain harmful or sensitive material", so I am unsure if that could be the cause? It's not like I asked too much inappropriate questions and I was more or less interested in the dynamics of my character's relationship. I did get a temporary error message that locked me out of it getting analyzed and after waiting a few hours it was working as usual before.

Either way, I didn't have any issues at all prior to this even with the nsfw stuff I asked it to analyze. It was all working fine until recently, and now I can't seem to do anything with file uploads at all except uploading documents to the library. It doesn't help too that I can't seem to manually access the library page containing all my documents. I have to use the tab I saved when I created the library to go there.

If anyone can help me understand what's going on and give advice to help me solve my issues that would be really helpful! Thank you!

This was something I been having a lot of trouble with. I been using dictionaries and been reading books to try and fix the issue, and no matter how much I try to think this over in a way that could allow me to experience the moment like I am living it myself nothing comes to mind.

Is there a way you guys get out of this slump? Its so weird that my eyes would instantly pay too much attention to all the pronouns I use at start the sentence.

Here are examples.

  1. When I do something for the weather:

She felt sunlight shine down on her skin.

-Can’t really think of any alts to live the moment myself then “Sunlight glistened down on her skin.” Still feels too character filtery instead of a lived experience.

  1. She knew it, but it didnt matter.

- I find myself using the word but and however a bit too much to contrast stuff, and when I read my own sentences I hate how repetitive this feels. Dont know what suitable words there are to fix this issue because when I get rid of them and try something else it would read as too stiff to my mind.
