What exactly is it about stream of conciousness thinking in a POV that removes the stiffness of seeing multiple action tags at once? I dont get it.
This is something that I have been seeing across my writing that I dont understand. Everytime I come across the issue of too many action tags in a short paragraph, it becomes far too noticeable and stiff. But for some reason adding a POV characters thoughts fixes the issue and makes it barely noticeable??
Here is some examples I written for general purposes only.
- Action Tag Only
Jake smiled at Sarah. He winked at her and proposed to her again. Sarah screamed at him in disgust.
- Action Tag with Stream of Conciousness
Clark looked at the two idiots before him that was making a mess of their apartment once again, the arguements starting anew. He was so tired of this. He stood there, hearing the shouting get louder. There they go again, making a big deal out of something so simple… the dry thought left him. He let out a long, frustrated sigh—removing his glasses and making his fingers pinch the bridge of his nose.
Couldn’t Jake and Sarah have their love quarrel somewhere else? Preferably somewhere that wasn’t within earshot of him. Jake was a close childhood friend of his, and they grown pretty close because of both of their fathers introducing them to the other as kids. They hit it off pretty well back then due to finding some unexpected interests they both had, and that was why he was willing to even entertain all this in the first place.
Can anyone help me identify why number 2 removes so much stiffness? I dont teally get it. Thank you!
