Subcontractor red flags - what makes you never hire someone again?

My list:

Shows up 2+ hours late without calling

'I'll be there Tuesday' (never shows)

Leaves job site a disaster

Quotes $X, invoices $X + 40%

'That's good enough' quality work

What red flags tell you to never work with that sub again?

Building my 'never again' list and need more warning signs 🚩

What's the worst 'existing condition' you've discovered after starting a job?

Opened up a wall expecting normal framing. Found:

Newspaper insulation from 1940

Three dead raccoons

Wiring that violated every code ever written

Structural beam that was just... vibes

Client: 'This shouldn't affect the price, right?'

What nightmare have YOU uncovered mid-project? Need to feel less alone. 💀

Your 'I'm now a real accountant' starter pack - what's in it?

✅ Noise-canceling headphones (to ignore coworkers)

✅ Excel shortcuts tattooed in your brain

✅ Coffee addiction you didn't have before

✅ The phrase 'it depends' on speed dial

✅ Stress about $0.12 variances

✅ Zero stress about $10K+ 'immaterial' differences

✅ The ability to say 'per my last email' without guilt

What would you add to the starter pack? 📦

If you got an Accounting tattoo, What would it be?

"Assets = Liabilities + Equity (basic but solid)

'Material' with a big X through it (life motto)

Just a really balanced T-account (chef's kiss)

A tiny '75' (if you know, you know)

What accounting concept do you love enough to permanently ink?

(Or hate enough to mark the trauma?) 💀

Lies Accountants tell Themselves

This reconciliation will take 10 minutes'

'I'll just finish this one thing and go home'

'The CPA exam wasn't that bad'

'I like month-end'

'I'm fine, just tired'

What lies do YOU tell yourself to get through the day? 🤡"

What bookkeeping software do owner-operators actually use?

Hey everyone,

I'm curious what bookkeeping software you guys are actually using day-to-day. I work with a lot of O/Os on their books and I'm always interested to hear what's working in the real world vs what gets recommended.

Are you using:

QuickBooks (Online or Desktop?)
TruckingOffice
Rigbooks
Excel spreadsheets
Pen and paper (no judgment!)
Something else?

And more importantly - does it actually make your life easier or is it just one more headache?

Would love to hear what's working for you and what isn't.

Explain your job to someone who thinks accountants just 'do taxes

Family: 'So you do taxes?'

Me: 'No, I'

Family: 'Can you do mine?'

Me: deep breath

How do YOU explain what you actually do without their eyes glazing over?

Bonus points if you've given up and just say 'yeah, basically taxes' 💀

Parents: 'You're good with numbers, be an accountant!'

Me: 'Okay!'

Also me: Uses calculator for 47 + 23

My therapist asked what gives me anxiety. I said 'unreconciled accounts.' She asked me to elaborate. I started crying.

Tried to explain why a $0.12 difference haunts my dreams.

She doesn't get it.

You guys get it.

That's why I'm here instead of therapy.

Please tell me I'm not the only one losing sleep over immaterial differences. 🫠

Roofing contractors: Are you tracking job costs properly or just guessing at profit margins?

Genuine question because I see this constantly, how many of you actually know your REAL profit margin per job vs. what you think it is?I work with a lot of roofing contractors and the most common thing I see:

✅ You bid the job at 35% margin
✅ Job 'feels' profitable
✅ Money hits the account
✅ But somehow at year-end there's way less profit than expected The problem: Most guys are tracking revenue but not TRUE job costs:

Material waste/overage (adding 10-15% to costs)
Unbilled labor hours (crew staying late, callbacks)
Equipment/fuel that doesn't get allocated to specific jobs
Dump fees, permits, unexpected costs
Helper/subcontractor time that doesn't get tracked

Real example: Contractor thought he made $15K on a job. After properly allocating ALL costs? Actually made $6K. Been happening on every job for 2 years.

How are you guys tracking this? Excel? Software? Napkin math?
Curious what's actually working in the real world vs. what the software companies promise."

CPA stands for 'Can't Party Anymore

CPA stands for 'Can't Party Anymore' and honestly that's more accurate during busy season than the actual definition
