Fauxdie's oil - Odie's Oil Substitute Recipe

I've liked odie's oil since I started woodworking about a year and a half ago. But at my local place the price recently went up to $70 for 9 oz and I don't like it THAT much...

So in an effort to skip that price tag I tried to make my own version that was also harder and took a bit more shine when buffed. To be honest, I have no empirical way to measure those things... but I think I got it! An now I would like to share the recipe with you, the people.

Disclaimers: I only started using this a few months ago and it seems to be holding up nicely but time will tell. I also do not have the resources or background in chemistry to promise that this is food safe... but it might be...?

Fauxdie's Oil:

6 fl-oz - Polymerized Tung Oil (I used Bumblechutes S'tung oil) $40-$45 for 16 fl-oz

4 fl-oz - Food Grade D-limonene (Nature's Orange) $40 for 32 fl-oz

20g - Beeswax (white or yellow is fine, I used VEGISHINE) $9 for 1lb

40g - Carnuba Wax Flakes (I used TOOGET) $19 for 1 lb

Process:

  1. Add all the ingredients to a wide-mouth pint Mason Jar

  2. place the jar into a small pot of boiling water (don't put the lid on it and avoid open flames).

  3. heat and stir until the wax is totally melted and the finish is a clear amber color (10ish minutes)

  4. removed the jar from the pot and allow to cool

  5. stir the jar occasionally as it cools to keep the mixture loose until completely cool

This will yield a soft hardwax oil that can be applied the same way as odie's. Scrub on with a fine scotchbrite pad, allow it to sit for a while, and buff it off. (it can help to heat it with a heat gun to get it down into the pores but that is optional.) 2 applications with a few days in between seems to produce the best results.

Price Break down:

S'Tung oil: $17

Nature's Orange: $5

Beeswax pellets: $.40

Carnauba Flakes: $1.70

Mason Jar: $2.50

1 Pint of Fauxdie's Oil: $26.60

Also, try not to eat it because it looks and smells exactly like orange curd...

Is there a way to measure a piece of molding to know whether a shaper bit will roughly match it?

My windows have this molding along the outside of the frame and it has rotted off on a few widows. I have access to a shaper and want to make a few new pieces to replace them, but I'm unsure how to know if a shaper bit will match the molding.

Is there a series of measurements I can take that would let me know that the size is right? I would take the molding to a store to compare it to the bit, but nowhere near me carries shaper bits and I'll have to get it online.

Longest I've ever stuck to a new hobby.

Did a big clean out and maintenance cycle now that summer is fully upon us and I thought it would be a good time to post my happy place.

I got into woodworking about a year and a half ago. Building is aone side of what used to be an indoor archery range my family uses as a storage unit. (Table saw is out of place because I was cleaning it)

I asked my dad what he wanted for fathers day and he said "build me something from whatever you have laying around for the garage.

Challenge accepted.

Admittedly, routing out the slots for the t-channel got a bit squirrelly due to some.poor clamping decisions but otherwise I think it came out good for being made from mismatched plywood and 2nd hand casters.

New end table - all oak

Odie's creative colors

Shellac

Red oak sides

White oak everything else.

Very stately, pretty happy with it!

u/DarePerks — 5 months ago

All oak end table.

Sides are 6/4 red oak stained with odie's oil creative colors. Shelf, top and drawer are 3/4 quarter-sawn white oak. All finished with Shellac.

Box is mounted to the sides with threaded inserts in expansion washers

It's heavy AF for such a small project!

I usually hate stain but...

This opaque black on oak kinda hits NGL

Odie's everlasting oil and creative colors (black obviously)

I don't care for the diluted mixtures but a 2:2:1 ratio of pigment, solvent and everlasting oil makes a real nice saturated finish.

Works best on oak (like every stain)

Window boxes, final installation.

All cedar, mostly fence pickets with a few thicker pieces for the frames.

Finished with zinnser sealer, milk paint and spar urethane. Can't really recommend milk paint unless you want a chippy/weathered look. It's a very coarse and finicky product, and it rubs through very easily at the corners.

Installation of a project I finished months ago.

Window boxes I made for my sister. She had to wait for about 4 months before I could go to Maryland and hang them for her.

All cedar with white milk paint under spar urethane. Can't say I love milk paint as a product. I don't like painting in general but milk paint is just more finicky than other products.

First attempt at actual furniture.

Still need to clear it's final spot in my living room but it's done.

Mostly cherry with curly maple drawer fronts. Finished with odie's oil.

Drawers are baltic birch with Walnut dowels, finished with Tried and True Danish oil.

Happy with it, although when I built the cabinet cases I didn't know you should wrap the wood grain so it expands front to back. One of the miters has opened slightly (I made it last summer and had to put the project on hold for a while) so I may be replacing the box(es) sooner than later. But it was a learning experience.

Plans are the Foureyes Furniture "Desquire"

Storage component that will match a new desk I'm still working on. Body is black cherry and the fronts are curly maple. Finished with odie's oil.

Drawers are 1/2 inch birch ply with Walnut dowels, finished with tried and true varnish oil.

Hopefully will have the desk finished soon too.
