I know I know a lot of you are going to say “it isn’t even out yet.. you don’t know it’s bad” and I get you. Just from what I saw I feel like Ubisoft really could’ve figured their shit out this time and still just failed to do so yet again.
Edit: Listen if you want to comment “I’m judging a photo of a meal before eating it” go for it but I beg you just read some of the arguments I made and respond to them and we can have a meaningful conversation
The original game is not perfect and that’s a criticism I get a lot bc I love the og and praise it a ton but after spending time replaying it, it’s definitely flawed.
I know that most people didn’t like how easy the combat felt and that’s a large reason why we got Odyssey and the birth of the rpg era in 2017. I think that could’ve been fixed without implementing the shadows / mirage combat system.
And the same goes for the parkour mechanics. The showcase showed us that they are doing the same thing. They are implementing that weird magnetic / no momentum based parkour system that they’ve had in recent installments. I feel like if they took the old mechanics and spent that time refining them (BECAUSE THEY ARE FLAWED AND NOT PERFECT) instead of spending their time changing the mechanics to fit their “modern” style, they would’ve been a lot better off.
Unity was a game that was rushed but turned out to be a fundamentally really strong game mechanics wise. I truly believe if they went back to that engine and made a game with those mechanics (and also get a good dedicated team working on it) people would be happy. It was actually challenging combat while you still got awesome animations and felt powerful. (and also didn’t stray from the camera placement/zoom/shake and slo mo that made the other games combat feel good)
To further that point one of my favorite feelings ever in video games is how powerful the stealth and assassinations feel in the older games (when you put a hidden blade through a throat, you feel it). I strongly feel these refined core mechanics in ac4 and Unity would’ve been much appreciated by the fans who love the original game.
Adding a crouch was an interesting move. I feel like the old dev team implemented that “crouch in the bushes” system for a reason as it works for the various level layouts but I’m excited to see how that adds to the stealth
Now I do like the look of the game it is incredibly beautiful when compared to the og.
I also like how they fixed tailing missions (although worried how that will turn out because some of the missions I feel like you need to fail when getting detected)
Who knows maybe I’m wrong and just unnecessarily hating before it even comes out like a lot of you say, but after being a Ubisoft fan for almost 20 years I’m tired of having faith in them and being let down in the last decade. Sorry for ranting & hopefully I’m wrong
