Time to say goodbye to an old friend - Nike Special Field AF1

This is my oldest pair - way back from 2019. It was released in 2017 and was inspired by military footwear.

It’s been 7 years with these and we’ve been through thick and thin together. None of my pairs have been used as roughly as this one.

Endless bike rides, treks, harsh sun, heavy rains. All that and more. And it’s never once given up.

No fancy insoles, no ‘special’ materials. Just a very well-made pair of shoes that was both comfortable and help up their own against the elements.

But time has taken its toll on it. The leather is chipping off at multiple spots and slowly crumbling from the tongue. It’s also lost its shape and structure.

So decided to wear it one last time today before i dispose of it. A whole lotta memories and an amazing journey.

The shoe that became what it wasn’t supposed to - a story about the ‘Banned’

The Myth:

In a commercial that aired in 1985, Nike claimed that the NBA had banned these sneakers. The story went something like this - these shoes violated NBA’s ‘51% rule’ and Nike paid a $5000 fine for every game that MJ wore these shoes in.

Nike did pay the fine for every single game MJ wore the predominantly red shoes in. And, it was a fraction of what they would make from Jordan sales. But it wasn’t for these shoes.

The Truth:

It was for the Nike ‘Airship’ that Jordan wore on October 18, 1984. In fact, the Jordan 1 hadn’t even made its debut then.

But Nike gatekept this secret for the longest time. They never even mentioned the ‘Airship’ and maintained that these breds were the ones to be banned.

And the myth soon became the legend. Because if you say something continually for long enough, it becomes the truth.

In 2020, Nike finally acknowledged the truth when they released a retro of the ‘Airship’ and accepted its true history. A game-worn pair of those shoes became the first pair to ever get sold at around $1.5 million at an auction.

The name ‘Banned’ stuck to this pair and thus, it ended up becoming an iconic sneaker based on half-truths. Even today, it is widely and commonly referred to as the pair that got fined by the NBA when, in all reality, it never was.

Late to Yuto’s party but here we are.

Nike SB Dunk x Yuto Horigome ‘Matcha’

The detailing on this pair is peak and full of references to Yuto’s life and his Japanese heritage.

His family crest is embossed on the side.

The insoles have a silhouette of a Japanese shrine like the ones he used to go to as a kid.

The outsole has a pink patch, signifying his love for cherry blossoms. The pink laces? Same reason.

Bamboo and Matcha tones all over the shoe.

HypeFly coming through as usual.

As mentioned in the message by Reddit, they’re testing out an Ad feature where they may include comments by redditors regarding the concerned brand in the ad itself.

This may lead to a higher influx of PR comments vouching for brands, which could then potentially show up in these ads. Someone seeing these comments in an ad may easily misconstrue them as genuine feedback.

We request you to please report any suspected PR post/comment to the mods so that they may be looked into by us and removed if needed.

Thanks, Sneakerheads! ✌️
