Follow on No 2

Following on from the tasting I did a few weeks ago with family. Where we blinded 3 Reposado’s and ranked them as we saw fit. I decided to come back and taste the individual bottles starting from the lowest ranked. It’s taken a little longer as I haven’t been drinking much with work being quite busy.

Today we’ve got the second place finisher. Tequila Ocho Single Estate. The current bottle is Las Raíces Estate, 2024 vintage.

Tequila Ocho are known to emphasise terroir in their tequila. Like my favourite distillery Bruichladdich, with each batch coming from a single estate. Does it make a difference I don’t know I’m a simple man. I just know they make good tequila and long may it continue. Enough preamble here we go.

Method : Rested 10 mins in a glencairn glass

Colour : Again light in colour but compared to El Tequileño it’s got a lot more barrel colour. Straw I reckon

Nose: Cooked agave, pepper, nectar sweetness really delicate sweetness subtle.

Palate: Smooth subtle sweetness again but pepper is at the forefront then grassy agave sweetness and pears towards the back. That pepper lingers and lingers mixed with agave sweetness at the end. Surprisingly medium to long finish.

Conclusion : This isn’t the typical tequila palate that some would be accustomed to. It’s peppery mildly sweet dare I say it earthy. It’s just a different vibe and if I was to compare it to El Tequileño. It’s a little bit more complex quite a few things going on in a good way and it rewards taking time with each sip. Revised score again lol 4.

Final Thoughts: This tequila reminds me of my 3yr old nephew fiesty, inquisitive, ever curious and a borderline pain in the rear. But also affectionate, happy go lucky and full of life. I’ve gone off the rails a little bit. But this is what 3hrs of sipping slowly and enjoying this tequila has done. Ocho has a place in my heart as it was the first additive free tequila I tasted and set me off on the agave spirit journey.

Salud!!!

Follow on

Following on from the tasting night I had last weekend. I decided to taste the individual tequilas in the line up based on their merit. I’m starting with the lowest scorer on the night. Same methodology as the tasting night, neat first then in a cocktail. Cocktail being the Tommys Margarita. Let’s go

El Tequileño Reposado

Rested 10 minutes in a glencairn glass

Colour : Light just a touch of coulour from the barrel

Nose: Cooked agave, black pepper, hint of caramel just a hint

Taste: Agave sweetness more honey rather than caramel. Smooth and the pepper takes a back seat. I want to say oak but it’s very very light. Which gets me to the barrel influence just a hint of that.

Conclusion: First off I want to make a correction this is a good tequila and the score I gave previously doesn’t do it justice. It got lost in the sauce with cocktails and festivities flowing. Had this been the only bottle on the night people would have enjoyed it. It’s an elevated experience compared to the well bottle which is Olmeca Altos and it was noticeable during the tasting and when I was on my own. This could be my well tequila but!!!! It only comes as 50cl in the UK and Olmeca Altos is just better value. Though I think their quality has gone down a little it could be me who knows.

Score: 3.0 which is good above average. It’s not complex but it’s an easy sipper and without the festivities of the other day makes me realise what good juice this is. I’m on the lookout for the Gran Reserva Reposado to see what variation there will be.
Happy Weekend

Salud!

Tasting

It’s my birthday and I decided to do a tasting with this lineup. I’m a tequila drinker so it’s my forte, now while I love blancos for their purity of agave spirit. My preference is Reposado and anejo. Scotch drinker (UK) and I love the intricacies of barrel influence. My family however don’t drink tequila like I do so I decided to do a blind with my people’s. We’ve got Cascahuin Repo, Ocho Repo, El Tequileno and Olmeca Altos Repo. With Olmeca it’s my cocktail bottle I don’t usually sip it as I have better bottles for that. Proviso I’ve been an Ocho believer since I started my tequila journey but we had a new number 1 for me any way. Tasting method was in a glencairn all spirits rested 10 mins

Ranking out of 5 :

Cascahuin : 4.3 this blew everything out the water even my non tequila drinking mother loved this.

Ocho : 3.9 man what a surprise I’ve been a Ocho fan boy since I started drinking tequila properly. It’s my gateway Reposado but we all agreed this was second best

El Tequileño : 2 we were all in agreement this was the worst of the three

What a fun night though first time tasting Cascahuin and it was amazing. I love their Tahona but the Repo maan. I’ve got a Fortaleza Repo I’ll do another blind with it.

Happy Drinking !!!!!

Help/Advice

Hi all I have a couple of questions that I wanted to ask the community. Currently I own a 3dr ‘16 f56 Cooper S manual and as my family is expanding, we are outgrowing the 3dr. I have to go bigger and since I want to stay in the miniverse my options are the F60 countryman or the F54 clubman, I ruled out the f55 as I’ve never warmed to it. I’ve always loved wagons so the countryman was ruled out straight away as I don’t fancy a crossover. That leaves the clubman. I’d love the JCW but sadly my job entails a lot of motorway mileage that rules out the JCW and Cooper S as I need reasonable returns on mpg. Diesel it is then my questions are

Is there a difference if I get an All4 clubman as compared to a standard FWD one.

The second one is what should I look or watch out for as I’m actively looking. Look foward to your responses

Thanks
