Found this olmeca reposado, looks pretty old

I just got this bottle from a relative as a gift. I know that the modern standard olmeca is a mixto, but on this one it says that it’s 100% agave. I was wondering if it’s quality stuff since i’m pretty new to tequila altogether and this is my first bottle. Also can yall give me some tips on how to enjoy this stuff? Should i serve it neat or can it be used also in cocktails? After looking at the back label it seems like it's a 2008 bottle imported to Greece, has anyone here tried this older version before?

Start of my collection

Hi everyone!

I’m new to the subreddit and tequila in general and am absolutely loving it so far! Here is my current collection (minus clase azul repo not pictured because it sucks 😂)

I’m really enjoying Añejos and XA a lot and I’m afraid I’m going to go through my tears bottle I just bought in a month if I’m not careful 😂

What are some others y’all recommend to add? I think my next bottles will be a basic under $30 blanco for cocktails as well as an El Ateo French Oak Añejo. What else should I add? Any comments on my current collection?

My first ever bottle was that still strength Fortaleza and I almost finished it before I realized how sought after it was and that I need to slow down so now I’m guarding the last couple ounces. It was a gift for my birthday from a friend who owns a bar!

Non popular choice

I like chamucos. The expression comes out in its 55 blanco hard.

Statement 2 fuck lucho and ateo 🤣. I couldn’t respond to the other thread.

Bottle recommendations - Tequila and Mezcal

I’m interested in getting more knowledgeable in bottles and taste, and also want to try some more to be my favorite. I typically drink mine with a cup full of ice, couple shots, and a splash of OJ.

Favorite mezcal is 400 Conejos
Favorite tequila is Lalo

I don’t drink frequently enough to drink low tier stuff, so I don’t necessarily have a budget. What are some suggestions you have? TIA!

Paloma milk punch help

Hey gang - Ive been tasked to make a large format drink for a birthday party and it was requested to be a tequila based cocktail. I have some grapefruit and honey black tea, and an herbal grapefuit tea. I was thinking i wanted to make like a Paloma milk punch type of cocktail. Is that crazy?

Generally speaking the rough recipe I’m using would be:

1.5oz blanco
0.5 repo
0.5 grapefruit liquor
1oz gf juice
0.25 lime
0.25 honey syrup
1.5 grapefruit tea

Then scale up depending on the guests and clarify.

Does this sound like a good idea? I genuinely like the whole process of making cocktails but I cant help but think I’m over engineering this lol

Any thoughts/comments/suggestions would be welcomed!

Criollo agave and the denomination?

Calle23 makes a version of their tequila based on Criollo, which is a sort of variaty of Blue Weber. I have been a bit confused as to how it has been possible to introduce this variaty without getting into conflict with the denomination? As I understand it, there are other varieties which may also be used without violating the denomination, but ARE they being used? And did the introduction of the Criollo not cause any discussions?

Canada agave

Hi everyone, I'm Bobby! Myself and a few fellow enthusiasts created an all-agave group specifically for Canada.

Since our availability up here is so different from other markets, we wanted a dedicated space to help Canadians track down great agave spirits, find out where to get them, and stay updated on new releases.

Check out the main group link below—I've also shared our WhatsApp chat!

Casamata Tequila

Master Distiller Alberto Herrera of Tierra Noble Tequila just dropped a new brand called Casamata tequila.

A few key differentiators from Tierra Noble is that they used a significant amount of valley agaves ~90% as opposed to TN that is a 75% Highlands and 25% valley. They also split the fermentation where half is normal fermentation and the other half is taken to a malolactic fermentation. And finally after distillation, the tequila is rested in glass demijohns for 45 days. I think Siembra does glass resting for one of their expressions but it is very rare in tequila. This is something you see more with mezcal or other agave spirits.

Taste:

I get sweet cooked agave, minerality, grassy, herbal, very faint white pepper and a pronounced sweet citrus rind note towards the end. It has a creamy texture too. Fresh comes to mind.

Oh fun fact, the name comes from Casa Mata which were military fortifications in Mexico some 200 years ago. These fortifications were of course filled with munitions, weapons and apparently also demijohns of tequila and mezcal.

The glass bottle is beautiful and I can't do it justice with my cellphone.

Barrels or Bottles

I like trying to turn my passions into profit. I’ve invested in bottles of wine before, partly because I like wine and partly because the idea of owning something tangible that might appreciate is more interesting than watching another number move around a brokerage account.

(It also feels better to tell my wife that I am “investing” rather than just spending thousands of dollars on expensive booze, but I digress..)

Anyway, as of late I have got super into tequila.

There seem to be two completely different plays. Keen to hear the Tequila world's thoughts on the below.

Option one: buy “rare” bottles.

Find a limited release, store it in perfect condition, and hope someone pays 3x in five years because the producer has become trendy.

It can work. I’ve seen the same thing happen with certain wines. The problem is that tequila stops ageing once it leaves the barrel. From then on, you’re betting almost entirely on branding, scarcity and collector hype.

Every producer also seems to have a “limited founder’s ancestral reserve edition” now and most of them won’t become properly collectible.

Option two: buy the actual barrel.

This is where it gets interesting.

Tequila needs at least one year in oak to become Añejo and three years to become Extra Añejo. Those are official classifications from the CRT.

While you hold the barrel, the actual product is changing. You’re buying younger tequila and waiting for it to turn into something scarcer and potentially more commercially valuable.

You then sell it to someone that needs to bottle it.

Where can you get absolutely rugged?

Pretty much everywhere if you don’t get the legal structure right.

A PDF saying you own “Barrel #69420” doesn’t mean much on its own. I’d want to know:

  • Which distillery produced it?
  • What’s the NOM?
  • Is it 100% Blue Weber agave?
  • Where is it stored?
  • Is the barrel individually recorded and verifiable?
  • What do I legally own?
  • Is it protected if the provider goes bust?
  • Who insures it?
  • Who takes the evaporation loss?
  • What are the storage and exit fees?
  • Who is realistically going to buy it from me?

If the salesperson responds with a chart showing guaranteed 20% annual returns, congratulations, you’ve found the tequila equivalent of a shitcoin.

Which providers actually exist?

A few names I found:

  • WineFi offers tequila barrel investments alongside its existing wine-investment business. It stood out because they have some big/reputable backers.
  • Tequila Financial is a US-based specialist offering portfolios of barrels held at Mexican distilleries.
  • Barrel Global looks more collector-friendly, with single-barrel ownership and the option to bottle or explore resale.
  • Colecta is aimed mainly at Hong Kong and Asian investors and says it provides sourcing, insured storage and resale support.
  • GORDON offers several three-year cask structures.

That isn’t a ranking, and I haven’t done full DD on all of them, but WineFi and Gordon look the most legit.

Bottom line

The tequila market is still pretty underdeveloped, and so bottles are lottery tickets on brands and collector hype.

Barrels are illiquid private-market inventory where the actual liquid continues developing during the hold.

Neither is free money. There’s counterparty risk, evaporation, storage costs, currency exposure and no guarantee anyone will buy your barrel at the price you want. But I like investments connected to things I’m genuinely interested in, and I like the possibility of making a passion profitable.

If I had to choose between a speculative collection of bottles and a properly structured barrel investment, I’m taking the barrel.

Opinions on Cuervos Reserva de la Familia Extra Anejo

I have begun using this Cuervos Reserva de la Familia Extra Anejo in the tastings I make for people. Mostly because it allows me to tell some good stories about Jose Cuervo and his time. I must confess it is a product which I find a wee bit to brandy like for my taste. What is the verdict in this forum?

Today’s Tequila Haul for UFC

Completely emptied my tequila bar so i had to fill up.

Lalo
Herradura Ultra
Codigo Rosa
Mijenta Gran Reserva
Codigo Repo
G4 Repo
Cazadores

Picked up a few new bottles today to add to the collection. Grabbed Mijenta Gran Reserva (2nd time having it), Código Rosa, Herradura Ultra and LALO, plus some reposados including Cazadores, G4 and Código. I’ve been trying to branch out and compare different additive-free/traditional-style tequilas instead of sticking with the same bottles. Really interested to see how the G4 and Mijenta compare with some of the others I already have. Any recommendations for what I should add next based on these?

Fortaleza

Which Fortaleza would you add to your shelf next if you already have the blanco? Fortaleza Still Strength, Reposado, or Añejo? $70.00, $74.00, & $100 respectively. I generally drink only blanco and am leaning towards the still strength to compare with the Cascahuin Tahona I currently have on my shelf.

Aztec Eagle Margarita

So Disney Epcot la cava del tequila has an exclusive margarita for d23 members called the Aztec eagle. It's one of my favorite margaritas but it's also pre made up so I can't see the bartender making it. Does anyone know the ingredients of this drink so I can make it at home?

Another gem by Chava and the Cascahuín team

After missing an opportunity to buy a bottle of Destino at everyone’s favorite 😉 TW, I finally had the opportunity to get a taste of this Cascahuín expression and it didn’t disappoint. But then again, what coming out of 1123 does?
This is a beautiful mouth coating blanco that hits all the right notes of what tequila was meant to be. Peppery with hints of bell peppers and fresh cut grass. A mild sweetness that balances the natural citrus notes into a symphony of complexity and depth of flavor. Outstanding, yes! But I think 11-Brix still has this one beat IMO by a measure or two.

Beach Trip Items

Gonna spend a few days at Crystal Beach TX. Starting out with these three blancos. This will be my first time trying the Lost Lore. About to see what all the hype on it is. The Aguasol is always a solid choice and not too expensive. Now the G4 high proof blanco is pretty damn amazing. It has definitely got a kick but the flavors are so bold. And really for a quality high proof like that it really isn’t that expensive, I think it was like 63 plus tax. We will most likely sip these near as well as mix them. I use 2 oz of tequila, pinch of salt, little squirt of agave syrup, splash of margarita mix and top off with Topo Chico. Spied some Volans high proof earlier, that may be next on the list.

ISO celebration bottle for wedding

Hey everyone, I’m getting married in a few weeks and I am searching for a quality/nice bottle of sipping tequila to enjoy with my groomsmen as we get ready. I think given the magnitude of the event, some rarity/scarcity would be nice to have, but I default to those who are much more knowledgeable in quality tequila. As some background info, I’m typically defer to sipping el Tesoro anejo as my go to, but I’m really open to anything.

What’s one celebration splurge bottle that you would recommend? Thanks in advance for any recommendations you may have for bottles that fit the event. Still quite the newbie but appreciate it.

This week’s find

I’ve been a big fan of Suerte Anejo and I’ve only seen the XA a few times out in the wild. I finally pulled the trigger on this and I wasn’t aware of the different varieties of XA that they produce until I searched it on Agave MM. I’m glad this is the one I found since it’s rated a 89/89(I believe it’s the highest rated Suerte). Nicely done for the money, I’m gonna stick my neck WAY out there and call it the “poor man’s Tapatio XA Excelencia” yikes don’t shoot me lol. If you can’t find that Tapatio XA or you don’t want to spend Tapatio XA money go find this. I found this at one of my local spots that doesn’t price hike their tequila too much(they have Fortaleza blanco for $85) I found this for $119. Cheers!
