Rescued a cat, now my coworker is pressuring me
Hey guys! I apologize in advance if this story is all over the place, so much has happened in 2 days and I’m a mess right now.
I (22F) rescued a cat off of Facebook Marketplace. she’s 7-years-old and such a cutie. He was giving her away for free, never told me why but I think he just didn’t want her. He seemed eager to give her away. I know there’s people out there who take advantage and harm animals they find free online, so I couldn’t just scroll past after seeing her.
Yesterday I met the owner halfway since she lived a little over an hour away. He told me she’s not spayed or vaccinated, which I didn’t know beforehand. I have cats of my own so I cannot keep her long-term, but I have fostered in the past. I looked at different options on that and everything requires that she needs get spayed and vaccinated, which would be out-of-pocket. I found a low cost clinic so I don’t mind.
Anyways, I’ve been asking people I know and trust if they are interested in a cat and my coworker actually said yes. She is a lot older than me, a supervisor, and I found out her friend is 80. Her friend has recently lost her cat but she is ready for a new companion. Obviously, shelters don’t adopt out because of her age which is understandable. I still feel for her though and was going to give her the cat under certain conditions.
The plan was to vaccinate and spay the kitty, then after she recovers she can go to meet them IF I meet the friend in person and feel like it’s a good match. Well, my supervisor had different plans and immediately wanted to have the cat meet them the day after I picked her up. That would require driving this terrified poor cat 30 minutes away to see even more strangers. Absolutely not.
I tried to be nice and set boundaries but now it’s too late I feel. I know I should have put my foot down sooner and I’m upset I didn’t. They do not understand cats, and I now feel incredibly pressured to follow through I know part of it may be my fault but I also think it is completely overstepping boundaries on my supervisors part. I will attach screenshots.
I gave 2 options, however I am now wishing that I did not give any options.
After the email my supervisor sent me (instead of texting me back), I called her friend and told her exactly what I’m doing. Getting her vaccinated, spayed, and after she recovers then she can take her IF I think it’s a good match. Well, her friend also did not understand or chose to ignore me, and somehow is under the impression she will get the cat immediately after she gets her vaccinations in 2 days. I told her she needs to be spayed and she asked me why if she is 7 and will be an indoor cat for the rest of her life. MEDICAL ISSUES. It’s NOT just outdoor cats that need to be spayed!
After she asked me that, I am definitely even more hesitant to give her up. I told her I want her spayed and she said she will look for a low cost clinic closer to her and get it done, however I have a feeling that she won’t follow through.
I admit, I probably made this complicated but my supervisor pushed it on to me the minute I said something and it just got to a point that I didn’t know what to say or do.
I just want the best for this kitty and I don’t know how to fix this clusterfuck of a situation.
