anyone read, reading or heard of this book?
I absolutely love Mercutio, so obviously I am a little disappointed that we don't get to see all that much of him within Romeo and Juliet. So, unsurprisingly, when I heard about the book Mercutio by Kate Heartfield, I was VERY excited. My boy got his own book!
I am only part way into it (SO PLEASE NO SPOILERS OR ANYTHING IN THE COMMENTS!!!) but so far for a boom that is effectively professionally published fanfiction, this book is absolutely amazing. The worldbuilding, story and original characters are enough to make it that people who have never read Romeo and Juliet could still enjoy it as a standalone story, but it expands and builds on the themes explored in Romeo and Juliet, and makes sure Mercutio is still recognisable as Mercutio. I was originally worried that it would just be some random fantasy story with Mercutio's name slapped on it because it's Shakespeare and that sounds clever, but I was quickly proven. It expands on the Mercutio we already know and love while keeping his original spirit. The way I see it is that in Romeo and Juliet we only really get to see Mercutio from the perspectives of the other characters, but in this book we actually get to see Mercutio from his own perspective and look into his world. Although this book obviously isn't canon, I appreciate getting to see an interpretation of who Mercutio is beyond just 'the funny one'.
My favorite thing is definitely how it managed to work both as an extension of Romeo and Juliet but also as its own standalone story. That's a pretty hard balance to find!
I'm not even halfway through yet and there has been several points where I've been like '... I didn't expect that.'
I would 100000000% recommend this book so far!!! I love it a lot!
so yeah shoutout to Kate Heartfield for doing Mercutio justice (at least in my opinion) and giving him the main character moment he deserves.
anyone here watched Conrad Askland's Romeo and Juliet the musical?
I literally love Conrad Askland's musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet so much and you can watch the whole thing for free on YouTube and yet I don't hear anyone talking about it???? It's so good and I love how they used Shakespeare's original word to make all the songs and stuff it's really creative. I thought it would be much mo4w popular than it is but it seems not many people have even heard of it which makes me a bit sad because it's so cool

What does my comfort character say about me?
My comfort character is Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. Thats why I didnt use a picture, because play characters generally don't have any canon appearance and I want to make it clear I'm not referring to any specific adaptation.
:)
relatable :P
that feeling when someone tells you to destress by spending time on one of your hobbies but you're a writer and your hobby is also the very thing that is causing you stress.
(in all seriousness tho I love writing. most of the time.)
Opinion on music while writing?
this is really random but I'm curious what is everyone's opinion on listening to music while writing? I feel like this is something writers are really divided on.
For me it really depends. Sometimes it can be helpful and sometimes it's distracting. Also I need the vibe of my music to match the vibe of what I'm writing, otherwise it feels disjointed. I can't be listening to calm music while writing something not very calm. Which means I end up wasting lots of time trying to find the right music instead of writing.
What's your opinion? Do you like to listen to music (or even like white noise and stuff) when writing, or do you prefer total silence?
Appetite of a Perfectionist
I wrote a poem about the struggles of perfectionism. I don't really know what to say about it because it's not a story I can give a kind of blurb to, but I'd love to share it! :)
