Earlier tonight I received a panicked message from a colleague asking how to care for a kitten. I know her to be a dog owner, so I was surprised. Turns out that while walking the dog she found a stray kitten in her hedge and took it in. As I'm known as the "cat-dad" of the team, she contacted me for help. I advised her to call the animal protection services to pick up the kitten, but they had already closed for the night and wouldn't be able to collect the kitten until tomorrow morning. So I went over there with some quickly crafted small bowls and a small amount of litter to hold them over for the night.
Once there, they had relocated the kitten to another room (to create distance from their excited dog) and had purchased food for the kitten from the local store (albeit served it with water in massive bowls which the kitten couldn't reach). After replacing the bowls and building a small litterbox we went downstairs to give the kitten some peace and quiet. An hour later, however, the doorbell rang.
We expected it to be the animal protection services, but instead it was a group of passers-by with... another kitten. My colleague had hung up a sign saying "kitten found" outside, in case it was not a stray. But the passers-by interpreted it as "we lost our kitten" and thus we ended up with two now. As soon as they were together they became more calm and comforted (likely they are siblings) and started exploring and eating.
Tomorrow they'll both be collected and will hopefully be given a happy home. For us, it was a most surprising (but fun) night.
