These are all around the bottom of a tree in my yard in Mississippi. They remind me of pecans, but obviously they aren't. What are they?

Edit: Solved kinda! Lol ... I've never seen them with that hull before. I found one without it. But why is all the fruit all gross? Either dry and powdery or just like wood ... no real nut in rhere ...
