King Mohammed VI, in His Speech to Parliament, Says Morocco’s Current Model of Migration Management Has Become Outdated
In his speech to Parliament, King Mohammed VI talked about the challenges Morocco is facing and the need to speed up reforms in areas like water and food security, education, youth employment, and decentralisation.
The second part of his speech was about the migration crisis and Morocco's cooperation with Spain. He said:
(...)
"Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Kingdom has succeeded in consolidating its position on the international stage as a responsible and reliable partner, committed to honouring its obligations and expecting its partners to treat it in the same manner.
The balanced approach adopted by our country in managing the phenomenon of migration has yielded tangible results.
However, we must acknowledge, with courage and objectivity, that the current model of cooperation in this field has become outdated, and the recurring crises are the clearest evidence of this.
The same applies to our neighbour Spain, with whom our partnership has undergone significant developments across various fields, including the fight against irregular migration.
Nevertheless, this cooperation is now facing major challenges, linked to certain outdated legal provisions and judicial rulings that are out of touch with reality. Unfortunately, these prevent the repatriation of underage children and individuals who falsely claim asylum, while fuelling the ambitions of criminal networks.
In the face of irresponsible statements and the blatant exploitation of this issue by certain political and media circles, we affirm that partnership is a sovereign choice and a voluntary commitment, and that it will never be subject to any pressure, threats, or blackmail.
In this context, Morocco will present its partners with a document setting out a clear and practical strategic vision, laying the foundations for a new direction that strengthens shared development, economic competitiveness, and regional stability."
