Steve saved lives today

The Big One hit today, as was predicted. Never seen a tarp go on before a drop of rain landed, but as soon as it was out the sky went black, the heavens opened up, and the city skyline disappeared behind a wall of water.

Thankfully I was prepared by the Weather Look Ahead and was able to take shelter. Thank you Steve 🫡

New house doesn’t have cell service

Just moved into a house that doesn’t have cell service. It’s been a month and I’ve noticed a couple items that may or may not mean it’s time to upgrade my phone or just live with it. iPhone 15 running 24.6.2 with Verizon (I’ve already checked and none of the major carriers cover my house).

  1. WiFi calling is hit or miss. I’d say it works 50% of the time. Sometimes I can force it to work by putting my phone in airplane mode. Other times I need to turn my phone off and back on. After restarting WiFi calling will always work, both incoming and outgoing. Could this be an antenna or other hardware issue? Software issue? Carrier issue? Seems to be a bit better after last update, but still not perfect.

  2. Faster battery drain. Could be age of phone or could be phone constantly trying to find a cell or connect to satellite, even when connected to wifi—or probably both. Battery health is 91% going on 3 years after manufacture date. Is there a way to “tell” my phone to not search for cell reception when I’m at home? Or alternatively (if it would help either issue) is it possible to make my phone turn on airplane mode when I get home? If so, would this impact its connection to my HomePods?

  3. Not really an issue, but curious how others living in no cell areas but with a strong internet connection approach this seeing as this is the first time I’ve lived without cell service. Should I get a landline in cases of emergency (internet goes out, wifi calling isn’t able to work)? If my fiber optic internet is out, does that pretty much mean a landline phone would be out too?

Cash back Rewards and Merger

I have a few hundred dollars in cash back rewards and am pondering whether to use them before or after the merger. Does anyone have Capital One and know what their rewards are like and/or know what the rewards will look like after the merger? Should I play it safe and use them all up now in case something goes awry with migrating accounts? How are you thinking about using rewards in these uncertain times?
