Sixt Atlanta to Orlando Rental Experience - Great BMW X5, Concerning Billing and Damage Documentation
I recently rented from Sixt at Atlanta Airport and returned the vehicle at the Crowne Plaza Orlando location. Overall, the BMW X5 was great, but I had several concerns about transparency and documentation that left me uneasy.
My original reservation was for a BMW X3. When I arrived in Atlanta, the X3 wasn't available, and I was offered a BMW X5 instead. I didn't mind the upgrade because I needed the extra luggage space.
At pickup, I was told there would be a $200 security deposit hold on my card. That's the only deposit amount that was disclosed to me.
Later, while reviewing my rental details in the Sixt app, I noticed a message stating:
"An additional $86.01 deposit was blocked on your card at pickup."
This was never mentioned during pickup.
As soon as I noticed it, I called Sixt customer service to ask what it was for. I was told that because the rental was still active, they couldn't explain the authorization and advised me to call back after I returned the vehicle.
That response didn't sit well with me. If money is being held on my card, I should be able to receive an explanation immediately.
The bigger concern came during the return process.
Like many experienced renters, I always take a complete walkaround video before leaving the lot. I also scanned the QR code provided by Sixt and reported additional pre-existing damage that wasn't documented on the rental agreement.
When I returned the vehicle at the Crowne Plaza Orlando location, it appeared that the damage I had reported through the QR code system was not reflected in their records.
Thankfully, I had my own time-stamped video taken immediately after pickup.
Had I relied solely on Sixt's damage reporting process and not documented the vehicle myself, I could have found myself having to defend against damage claims for issues that existed before I ever drove the car.
To be clear, the vehicle itself was excellent and I had no mechanical issues whatsoever. My concerns are entirely about:
Additional authorization holds that were not disclosed at pickup
Customer service being unable to explain those holds
Inconsistent communication regarding charges
Damage reports submitted through the QR system not appearing during return
My advice to anyone renting from Sixt: take photos and videos of every panel, wheel, windshield, and interior surface before leaving the lot. Also keep screenshots of any damage reports you submit through their system.
I'm curious if anyone else has experienced additional undisclosed authorization holds or damage reports that didn't show up when returning the vehicle.
