Pileated Dad and juvenile
I thought I’ve been hearing a baby Pileated, but confirmed today with Dad showing his daughter the ropes! Baby woodpeckers are soooo goofy.

I took up bird photography in March and have been absolutely loving the new hobby. Brings me so much zen. I’ve taken over 38,000 photos in that time, and here are some of my favorites in the last 2 months or so. All shot on a Canon R50. I’ve rented the RF 100-500mm and RF 200-800mm, and most if not all of these shots were taken with one of these lenses. Already upgrading to the R7 and purchased the 100-500mm because I clearly have a sickness, lol. Any feedback is welcome! Still trying to improve 🙂
My red bellies are the only ones who will stand up to my grackle invasion. They taught the baby attitude early! This one made me laugh.
My male red belly is my spark bird, and has been coming to my feeders since last fall. He’s been coming even more often lately and picking up lots of food, so I figured he was feeding some babies. I’ve been dying to see them and finally got the chance today. Look at this proud papa! What a good dad. 🥰
Wanting confirmation on this flycatcher ID. I’m in northwestern Virginia. I’m thinking least flycatcher based on the white eyering, and because Merlin had heard one a bit earlier (but there was a lot going on so I take that with a grain of salt).
Half of these are out of focus because I was so excited I could barely hold the camera straight. But this dad downy was coming to my suet feeder and bringing some back to his precious baby who was hanging out in a nearby tree. What a cool sighting!!
I’m renting the Canon 100-500mm lens for the next two weeks just for fun, and these are from my first day using the lens. Not the best lighting conditions, as it’s been raining here for 3 days straight. Normally I use the RF 100-400mm on my R50, which is great, but man the autofocus on this lens is such a big upgrade.
What a beauty he is. I get excited to see him every single time.
I love tufted titmice, they are SO curious
I see downies and red bellies every day but rarely catch a glimpse of this guy! Didn’t even realize what I’d seen until I got home, because he was relatively far away.
The wrens were out and about this morning! Love their sassy personalities and their perky tails. Located in northwest VA.
