Social Reckoning, Digger, Dune 3, Cliff Booth, Artificial Likely Skipping due to Production Delays/Marketing Considerations

Alberto Barbera, the head of the Venice Film Festival, was interviewed about the lack of studio features at this year's fest, something TIFF has experienced to a lesser extent. His answers are below and with TIFF just a week after, pretty much precludes these films too.

DEADLINE: Another absence is that of the big studio films, which has been a trend across the European festivals this year. Do think Hollywood is pulling back from the festival scene for good?

BARBERA: If you look closely at the prediction pieces published in the trades on films that could be at Venice in the last few months, there were very few studio films. There was Iñárritu’s Digger which Warner Bros. immediately declared they didn’t want to participate in the festival for marketing reasons. Alan Sorkin’s film (The Social Reckoning) isn’t finished because they have to reshoot sequences in August and therefore it won’t be ready for Venice. David Fincher’s film (The Adventures of Cliff Booth), which at one point seemed certain to be a contender for Venice, has had production delays because Fincher, due to a personal issue, interrupted post-production and accumulated a delay that has meant the film isn’t ready. I’ve been in constant contact with Denis Villeneuve (on Dune: Part 3), who told me, ‘We’re very far from finishing the film. The film will be released at Christmas, and we’ll be ready a little earlier.’

It’s also fair to say that the studios are going through a complex time, merging, redefining production strategies, earning less… in short there’s a whole series of things. For sure the studios are questioning how to promote the films… but again I don’t want to jump to conclusions and say that from now on, studios won’t go to festivals because it’s not worth it, it costs too much.

DEADLINE: Another film that got away was Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial. We were hoping Neon might launch it in Venice after it took on the film in June...

BARBERA: Me too. The film is beautiful. I spoke at length with Tom Quinn, and he told me that the film won’t be released until January. He said, ‘We’ll do a technical release in December to qualify it for the Oscars, as is often done, but we can’t release it any earlier; we don’t want to release it any earlier. We have to sell the film. We paid dearly for it. We have to sell the rest of the world. We need time to succeed. So we’ve decided not to do any festivals.’

Referendum/Poll on AI Artwork

Hello everyone.

Over the recent few months, we have seen new imagery, generated with AI tools, posted to the subreddit. Several of these images have received a mix of community feedback in the comment section, with several upvotes and downvotes, and a considerable number of reports to moderation.

Speaking personally, I've heard both cases for and against the posting of artwork generated using AI tools to the subreddit. In order to keep things fair, and to maintain the community in a way best aligned with the wishes of the community, we're holding a referendum.

Please vote in the comments below in favour of or against the allowance of AI art in the sub. Please remain respectful and remember rule 2 - no harrassment.

The "opinion poll" will close within 48 hours.

Edit: And that's a lock. Rule 5 has been added.

No Rest for the Wicked (Moon Studios' Next Game) Launches October for Steam and PS5, "TBD" for Xbox and Switch 2

Needless to say, I'm disappointed and rather insulted. Back in 2021, Thomas Mahler (CEO of Moon) called on the following for Xbox:

>I personally wish Microsoft would have the guts to just go through with their vision. Make their games and port them to ALL platforms, not leave anyone behind. The 13 year old kid whose parents were able to only afford to buy one system for their child now won't grow up playing Halo because Microsoft believes that it makes the most financial sense to leave PlayStation players out. How does that benefit anyone but Microsoft? Yeah, you'll probably sell a bunch more Xbox's, but you lose out on millions of potentially dedicated fans.

>Show the industry that that's how you get the most amount of players to play your games. Didn't Minecraft show that that's the right way forward? If they'd do that, I'm sure pretty quickly everyone would follow suit, because usually all these corporations copy what makes the most amount of money... and on top of that, it's the best thing for the players out there.

>Your goal as a platform holder should be that these games play the best on your box, not that you force people to buy your box cause you're creating an artificial barrier for other players out there who weren't able to afford buying the system you're making. I hope I'll live long enough to see the industry embracing this kinda openness

Yet years later can't even port their game day and date to the platform that builds up a majority of Moon's current fanbase. This is like Lawbreakers and Cliffy B all over again.

Adam Wingard's Guest Spiritual Successor Lands Sept. 4th Date, Will Miss MM

Bummer, really hoped this would play. A lot of high profile flicks that should be fest locks are coming out the weeks before TIFF which is just strange.
