Dixie Photo | St. George, Utah

I just had to stop and see this old photo shop sign. It is out in St. George, Utah. This building was erected in the 1920's and the photo shop moved into this address in 1964. Dixie Photo was ran by Thomas Porter "Jack" Durrant until his death in 1999. The shop has been closed for a long time but the sign remains at 34 East Tabernacle.

Sunrise at the Goldwell Open Air Museum

Sunrise shot of the Medicine Wheel in Goldwell Open Air Museum. I was too overheated and overstimulated after a long stuffy night of shooting the stars to notice at the time but thereโ€™s quite a few of the art pieces in this shot.

In the very back left, behind the gift shop building, you can see a tiny bit of Dip Town by by Irina & Stanislav Schminke*.* This was from 2022โ€™s Burning Man festival.

You can see Ghost Rider by Albert Szukalski. Iโ€™m a big fan of this guy.

To the far right along the fence line you can see a giant sculpture of a penguin and a miner. This is called Tribute to Shorty Harris by Fred Bervoets. The penguin represents feeling like an alien in the Nevada desert.

On the top of a pole is Icara by Dre Peeters, a female form of Icarus flying high beneath the desert sun.

Thereโ€™s a lot more art than what Iโ€™ve shown off, too. Highly recommend a visit, day or night, youโ€™re sure to enjoy yourself.

Cook Bank building at sunrise

The Cook Bank building is one of the most photographed ruins in Nevada. The remains tower over Rhyolite Road when you drive in, and it does make for some really good pictures. I grab a couple every time I visit. This was taken at sunrise as the light began to overtake the valley.

Now I need to start taking pictures at sunrise because I loved the way the light looked. I get why itโ€™s a popular time for photographs now.

This weekend would be the time I am normally going out there to shoot without the moon but I am not sure if I will go this weekend, try to find a different spot, or just rest and prepare for my trip to Great Basin next month.

Lighting up Angelโ€™s Beechcraft C-45

Testing out my Amaran 25C with the plane at Angelโ€™s Ladies back in June because the sky was too light to shoot the Milky Way. You know I love this place and canโ€™t get enough.

I got this tool because I am wanting to light up abandoned structures at night for my pictures. I am inspired by all of the other photographers I have seen doing the same thing like Ken Lee. I have a long way to go, but Iโ€™m excited to see where this takes me.

Cook Bank in Rhyolite under the Milky Way

the old Cook Bank building out in Rhyolite. Part of the plaque on site reads:

โ€œOne of four banks in Rhyolite, the Cook Bank Building was by far the finest. Built of poured concrete, the building was three stories tall and had a basement that housed the Post Office. The interior was finished with marble staircases and mahogany accents. It also boasted modern conveniences such as electric lights and indoor plumbing.

Despite its opulence, the Cook Bank was open less than two years. In the summer and fall of 1907, a financial crisis, often referred to as the Knickerboxer Crisis, caused banks across the country to go bankrupt. By 1910, the Cook Bank was closed, and John Cook had sold off all the buildingโ€™s fixtures.โ€

Goldwell Open Air Museum Visitor Center

The visitor center for Goldwell. Iโ€™ve not been inside yet because it hasnโ€™t been open when I am there.

In one of the pictures, I lit up the building. Swipe to see the other version. Which do you prefer? The light dulls the sky (understandably). I am experimenting with light painting and I havenโ€™t had much practice yet.

Are there actually fireflies in Great Basin?

Got a trip in several weeks and it had me thinking... are there fireflies up there? So I did some googling and I came across this website: https://www.fireflyatlas.org/map

https://preview.redd.it/i1li3esia8hh1.png?width=364&format=png&auto=webp&s=830a3b1ab13dfc63da1025d7cb30d5d05724f293

The map shows a few locations near Great Basin that have had fireflies... All three spots on the map are from July 2023 and are pyractomena dispersa. The person who spotted them wrote this blog: https://www.xerces.org/blog/secrets-of-nevada-nighttime-no-its-not-aliens

I guess I am just curious how common they are and if I should try to go out and look for some. I've always wanted to see a firefly.

If you look behind you while standing in front of the Last Supper, you'll find Serving Ghost. This piece was created by Albert Szukalski for a private commission in 1984 and was donated to the Goldwell Open Air Museum in 2010 by Art & Patricia Adams. The original work had the ghost serving a set of wooden bottles but they had disintegrated over time. I'm not sure when, or by who, that the artists palette was added.

โ€œGhost Riderโ€ by Albert Szukalski, installed in 1984.

A friendly figure in the night beckons to me for a bicycle ride. Every month around the new moon, the worms in my brain start telling me I need to drive out to Beatty. My main inspiration for photographing the night sky comes from Albertโ€™s ghostly works that have been left in the desert for me to enjoy, 40+ years later. They make the perfect spooky foreground, I like the way my light can make shadows dance across them, and the dazzling night sky overhead where Iโ€™m always catching shooting stars.

Angelโ€™s Ladies and the Milky Way ๐Ÿ˜ (and a fun story about meeting the owner)

Hey guys ~ It's your favorite local self proclaimed wannabe brothel historian back with another post that absolutely nobody asked for (except my new friend J who found me on other platforms from my brothel posts here and has been such a delight to talk to about this stuff) โ™ก

Story time! I've gotten really into astrophotography lately so I've been going out at night trying to capture pictures of my favorite things with the stars and milky way. My favorite place to go is Rhyolite ghost town out near Beatty, NV so of course I have to stop at the Angels Ladies sign. And before I go any further with the story, I'm gonna go ahead and say it ... I know, I know... I need to be careful, obey property lines, people do crazy things protecting their property, etc.

I took my (other, different) friend out there so we could shoot together. A technique I use to get my photos is called lightpainting where I quickly shine my light on my subject so it illuminates in my long exposure but I am also able to get the dark sky with the stars. I was shining my light up on the sign. I could see a light down on the property by the house and I pointed it out to my husband and friend who told me they thought it must have just been the same light we saw last time we were out here (a porch light). The light disappeared. We kept taking photos.

I noticed a car driving down from the house so my friend runs away from her camera to move her car. She parked her car so it was slightly blocking the driveway into the property, oops. The car was speeding up and I was honestly frightened that he was going to slam into her car because he wasn't used to seeing it. He yelled out the window aggressively for me to get off his property. I could barely respond because he kept driving up to my friends car to tell her the same thing.

She explained to him that we were astrophotographers who were just taking pictures of the sign and he calmed down. I think he felt bad for yelling at two women in the night. To be fair, it was after midnight and I would have done the same thing if it was my property. He told us that people have been stealing parts off of the plane and he was worried that we were doing the same.

I explained to him that I was a big fan of the history of the property and just wanted to preserve the beauty of it with my camera. He gave me his phone number and invited me down to the ranch during the day sometime. He said he would show me the property, inside of the rooms, and even let me swim in his pool. Aren't there springs behind his property? I'll find out! I'm going to take him up on this offer sometime and when I do, I'll share everything I learn with the class ๐Ÿ™‚ He said he's owned the property for something like 10-15 years.

I managed to just get a few pictures of the sign with the milky way in the background like I drove out for. I was trying to set up to get photos of the plane too but after the confrontation, I chose to just go to my next location. I will be back to try again and this time, I'll let him know so he doesn't come chasing me off.

Please be respectful if you visit this location.
