Project: Hail Mary - 6.7 / 10 & I did enjoy it 😊

Hi all...

I managed to finally see this movie on its last day at my local cinema. And I did enjoy it despite the genre not being really my thing. I know it wasn't a comedy as such but I'm not into comedies, but it had plenty of funny moments. Great performances, especially Rocky. I liked the up-beat story the, as ridiculous as it is. You really do have to suspend your belief, but that was ok. At the end of the day, it's just a nice evening out with fluffy clouds and it puts a smile on your face - when is that ever a bad thing?

[MINOR SPOILER/S]

So Grace (yep, that's his name. It's my Mum's name too - well, it was). He's a schoolteacher, and most definitely not an astronaut, but through a series of situations he ends up over 11 years from home from somewhere in space, with the rest of his crew all dead. He's out there looking for some space dust because the world's sun is being eaten up by it. Or something. Probably.

So off he toddles, with his zero astronaut experience, but he's clever you see, to carry out this crazy mission. But while here out there, he meets a sexy alien doing exactly the same thing because their sun is being nibbled away too. And so begins the heart of the movie - the relationship between Grace and Rocky, the alien. Who happens to be lovely - just that's she looks like a bag of rocks. As hokey and ridiculous it all becomes, I had a thoroughly good time.

Don't ask about the ending, I'm not totally sure myself. But I do know it was a happy ending, everyone dies and both planets explode - but not before the love struck couple make a bunch of half-rock/ half-human kiddies. They call them Romans..... and if you think this story is stupid, which you get a load of this one about some bloke called Jesus.

Cheers all! 😊🎥

Can't believe that only the other day I announced something which, as far as I can tell - it's GONE!

Hi gang...

So just a couple of weeks ago, with help from Google, I finally found out that you can select all your tracks in the sequencer, go to 'Sort Selected Device Groups' and boom, Reason would sync all your tracks across the mixer and sequencer - a massive game-changer for me.

I expected most of the replies to be 'yeah, yeah, we know, go away" - but I got the exact opposite. Loads of long long time Reason users who, like myself, had been annoyed with this seemingly short sightedness of Reason - but it was there all the time. I got a lot of love that day!! 😁

But now, with Reason 14 - it's gone! Reason Studios have waffled on about something or other, but a lot like my posts on here - it's just waffle.

And I know it's not just me, because online is full of people complaining about it. I'm annoyed because after finally finding out the solution on something that bugged the shit out of me, and many other users - it would appear it has now just disappeared (is that grammatically correct?).....

If anyone knows any different - please do put us out of our misery - thanks! 😊🎛️

Hey gang....couple of questions for you fine folk 😊🎛️

Hope everyone is well......and ignoring the news. I stopped it, for the most part, a few years ago, and life has infinitely improved!!

So, how are we all finding v14, for those of you who have it now? Loving it? Hating it? A bit 'meh' about it? I have a subscription, so it was a no-brainer for me. Although I haven't used it enough to give much of an opinion yet. There is one new window they have created, the 'Track Panel' - and it is awesome. When I am working on an individual track, I hardly ever need to use the Mixer screen now - if you know, you know!

My couple of questions - I have Googled, searched, even sent an email to Reason with no response so far. Firstly, now I have installed R14+, can I completely delete R13? I asked on Reddit but got so many different replies.

Also, I now have my Reason subscriptions linked to my LANDR Reason Hub page. The problem is, a lot of functions that I click on takes me straight to the Reason Subscribe page. If they are services that you have to pay separately for, why is it sending me straight to the Reason Subscription page? I have the full v14+, btw.

And lastly, for anyone who clearly has nothing better to do than read my rambling posts, you might know that because I took such a long gap inbetween versions of Reason, it is almost like a new piece of software - so I am systematically going through each device, starting ,for the most part, with Players. This will always include setting up an Excel sheet to tick off what I am learning as I go along and what is left to learn (it's been shown that for inspiration and knowledge retention, this works. (It does for me anyway). Then maybe a video or two, then I scan the manual and then read it again thoroughly. And I always create a Reason file for whatever Device I am studying.

So what I have learnt is that Players are/can be absolute game-changers. The Polystep Sequencer is so good for creating plucky-type rhythmic riffs. Want to get a groove on? Quad Note Generator. Took me until reading the manual that it is designed for one-note triggering, not chords. Of course, you can play as many notes as you like, but it very quickly gets a bit over-crowded and mushy peas. If you want cool Arpeggios playing chords, Arpeggio Lab is the one. I haven't studied the Dual Arpeggio yet.

But here's a question for you - The Pattern Mutator. Does anyone use this? I started studying yesterday, and I just don't get it. I think it is down to just how people compose - I am not really one for clicking a button on a riff I have created in the hope a better riff will come along. But that is most definitely not to say there is anything wrong with that method - there is simply so such things as a 'good' or 'bad' methods when it comes to the actual creating of music. Now, engineering - that's another story altogether! 😁

I still haven't finished the manual yet, or watched any videos on the Mutator, so my opinion could easily change.

I have a feeling I will think the same about the Random Tool, but I haven't looked at it at all yet. Same with Note Tool, no ideas what it does. Oh, I love the Bassline Generator too - takes a bit of time to get your head around, but once you do, it's great stuff.

Right, that's enough waffle for me - if you finished this post, you deserve a medal. I will add one thing - I discovered Parallel Channels only a couple of weeks ago - to say it has made a huge difference to my engineering/mixing process is an understatement. My point is, is you still haven't got into it yet - do so, sooner rather than later, you will thank yourself for it. My drums and bass have never sounded the same (or as good) so easily. Instead of faffing around with EQ/compression and all that exciting stuff for hours....and hours. I started with this video, it has changed everything. It is only just over 3 minutes long, and Reason has so many Combinator patches for using with your parallel channel, it's insane.

Right, now I really will shut the fck up - I can hear your sigh of relief from here......

Cheers all!! 😊🎛️

EDIT: Anyone found a R14 manual yet? It is still only v.13 available for download...? And the new RV-9 Reverb Station?

Something for the instrument device experts out there......

Hi all....

When I say expert, I mean people (that'll be nearly everyone!) that are significantly more skilled at certain Instruments than I am.

I am systematically (and slowly!) working my way through the devices, and I am curious about the instruments, meaning the main synthesizers. So that'll be Thor, Algoritm, Europa, Complex-1, Grain etc. Because I have so many Instrument pre-sets that, for now, I can tweak to choose from, I am mainly working my way through the Players (I just love those things) and some Effects.

Because I do still like to tweak the pre-sets, with some of the Instruments I have skimmed through the manual to get an idea of what is what. So the question that really interests me is - what Instruments (the main synths) do you find hardest/easiest to wrap your head around? Like, for example, the Europa appeared pretty simple, until I realised it has 32 different modifiers, 16 spectral filters, plus that envelope window with it's 20 presets!

And don't even get me started on the Complex-1 synth....!!

So, I am really curious to hear what you guys have to say about the different synth Instruments - what tickles your fancy and you love to use, what you find really brain-melting, anything you find particularly easy to use and understand? Anything really would interest me.

No rush - if you chaps could add to this whenever, any reply is going to interest me (and hopefully others?).

Also, while I am here, a bit of a nothing question, but why do you think the two sequencers in Utilities are not in Players, and the Pulsar is not in Effects? I did say it was a nothing question!!

Also, I tried out my first ever CV/Gate connection tonight!!

Thanks in advance....... 😊🎛️

As a new(ish) user I just HAD to share this one that I Googled earlier....

HI all....

Probably most of you know this, but if you don't, I am sure you will find it handy - it is something that has bothered me since day 1.

As you know, when you order/label things, it doesn't sync it across mixer/sequencer and rack. Well, you can! Using the sequencer as your 'master' page, sort your tracks out as you want them. Then, select all tracks (CTL+A), then right-click and find 'Sort Selected Device Groups' and boom, it will sort your mixer and rack to the same order as your sequencer. Regarding labels, just do the label in the sequencer and it will change the mixer/rack (it doesn't do it the other way round!).

As I say, most of you probably know this, but if like me, you didn't, it's a real time-saver....and personally I found it pretty annoying before!!

Hi all.....

A week or so ago I came on here to ask about Blocks, and if I should bother using them. The answer from you guys was a resounding yes, so because of that I spent the next 2 or 3 days learning all about them - and I am really glad I did, because without you chaps I wouldn't have bothered.

So I have the same question for that little box at the bottom of most of the major synths, Modulation. Do you guys use it, what is it for, but more importantly (and this is what Google can't tell me), should I invest the time to learn it, and if so, how important is it to know - should I put it higher/lower on my extremely long list of things to study. I am systematically going through each device to learn them.

As always, thanks in advance.... 😊🎛️

With an empty song (you'll probably need Reason+ or lots of add-ons) go to your browser, Reason Library ⇰ Rack Extensions ⇰ Beat Map ⇰ Combinator Style Patches ⇰ Hip Hop and R&B and double click on the 'Rockefella Center' .cmb file. Then hit the Alt button and expand button to open every single device, and scroll down. And keep scrolling, and scrolling - now is it me, or is that not just slightly insane for what it is actually producing. Hit the TAB button for some real brain gymnastics......

We should have a competition for the most devices used for the least amount of sound produced.... 😆😆😆

Last couple of days I have been studying how Blocks work, and they are much more than just a slightly quicker way then cut & pasting clips. But I have bored you all enough with that, but I do have a question that is kind of niggling me. I'm just like that.....

Initially I used a video, and today I thoroughly read the section on Blocks in the Reason manual. There is a section that tells you how to turn the ghosted Block clips back into Song clips. Before explaining how to do it, it says:
"After you have arranged your Block Automation Clips in the Song View, you might want to convert the content of the Block(s) to “regular” clips on the sequencer tracks and lanes."

So sure enough, it explained how, it's very easy to do, but......why? As you can see, it just says "you might want to". I don't want to, and even more mind-melting, I can't think of a reason to do it. If you use Blocks, you know you can just override any section in a block by simply creating a clip over the top of it. Why would you need to turn all/some of the clips back to song clips i.e. not ghosted.

If anyone has any idea, that would be great.

Also, while I am here, when I was learning it yesterday I had the idea to make the first block with everything in it (not to ever play), and just cut things out of it as you create more blocks. The manual says the same thing, just a totally different method - To have everything in your first Intro block that you actually play, and mute out what you don't need. I was just wondering if anyone did anything similar to myself or what the manual recommends? If I may modestly say, I think my method makes more sense?

Anyway, have a great day all 😊🎛️

Hi gang....

This page popped up in my browser - it has 9 pages each with 18 Reason tips & techniques (except the last page) with features on everything from the Subtractor to the Objekt and everything Reason inbetween.

You're probably all going to tell me "yeah, we all know about this...go and get your coat" but I thought it was worth showing you guys anyway.

Let me know what you think.....

Firstly, I just can't get audio when trying to screen record. I have tried OBS Studio, Aiseesoft, and Windows screen recorder. With all three, on all the option pages, it is picking up my Focusrite sound card, so I just don't get why it's not recording any sound. I'm convinced it's some small, silly thing preventing it working. And I have Googled the feck out of it. I have had a few requests showing how I got started using Blocks a couple of days ago, and I would love to make a video. Plus get your opinion on some other things.

I appreciate that it is not a problem that can just easily be solved with a Reddit post, but if you don't ask, you don't get.

The second question is, hopefully, more straightforward. Just the other day I realised that you could drag a WAV file straight into the sequencer, and not only would it then automatically create an Audio Track, but it has a Vocal Edit section, Reason's version of Auto-Tune, basically. I have been having great fun singing into my phone, and creating little vocal hooks, without having to worry about using another artists stems. Can't wait to try out the vocoder!

But my question is - is there any device in Reason+ that can change my voice to that of a female? I know there are AI apps that do that, but the further I stay away from AI the better - I have pretty strong feelings about AI, which I won't bore you with here. In fact, one of my new act names is called NOAYI. What do you think - pretty cool or pretty naff?

Thanks in advance as always

A couple of weeks ago, someone made a post, and one of the replies had an innocuous little link to a short video about parallel channels, and how to use them in Reason, and how easy it is. For someone who has mainly only had production/playing music experience, not engineering, it has been an absolute game changer. I had been faffing about for hours with EQ, compression, all sorts of boringness, but all of those pre-set Parallel C. set-ups in Reason are just fabulous - my drums/rhythm and bass have almost become another instrument. As you guys have probably noticed, I can't stop banging on about it - I promise to stop now.

Anyway, it's happened again. I put up a post about whether I should finally put the time into learning how to use Blocks, and you chaps pretty much said a resounding "YES" - so I watched a video/read the manual today, created a new track specifically to learn Blocks and I think we have another game-changer here. It did take me awhile to get my head around why use Blocks and not just taking a micro-second longer to just cut & paste, but as someone said, it is way more than that.

I created an 8-bar, two-chord loop, and from that an actual track emerged. Nothing special, but that's irrelevant - the way it makes it so much easier to quickly set up a song structure is awesome. I can see that in future, instead little groovy loops staying exactly that - a little groovy loop - a completed track will emerge.

As always, I have waffled on too long, but I genuinely wanted to thank you guys because without your encouragement, I probably wouldn't had bothered - certainly not now, anyway. And as I said, it might/will become another real game changer.

Cheers all! 😊🎛️

PS I might upload the track I made this morning, my first 'Blockhead' track (any DEVO fans out there?!)
