How much time do your elementary schoolers get to socialize?

My husband and I disagree about homeschooling or public schools for our five-year-old — one of us worries homeschooling wouldn't allow enough opportunities for socialization & the other isn't sure kids have a whole lot of opportunity to socialize with the way school is structured now anyway.

To be clear, we do both believe that public schools ought to be cathedrals of learning. The spouse who wants to homeschool has been PTA president of their godchild's PTA in the past; they're not an opponent of public schools! But we aren't in love with the current execution.

So parents of kids currently in elementary school or teachers currently teaching in elementary school, what do you think? Do kids have enough time to eat & socialize during lunch? Or is lunch 20 minutes of rushing? What does recess look like in 2026? Are things just a completely different world than school in the 90s? Help us out here.
