Cheap improvements to a stock engine?

Hello everyone!

Do you have any type of modification to do on these engines while they're not yet assembled?

For example, I've read HERE that creating some grooves on the camshaft followers enables constant lubrication to the rocker arm assemblies.

Do you have anything like this to share that does not require too much work and money to improve reliability of the engine?

Clean Heavy Carbon Deposits

Hello guys!

Looking for tips to remove all this heavy carbon deposits from aluminum cylinder heads.

What do you recommend me to use to leave these heads as new? I've read DOT4 is great to clean these type of heavy deposits, has anyone had experience with this? Is hive cleaner good enough?

I know I will get suggestion to use wallnut shell but I don't have a big enough air compressor and space to do that.

If it helps, this is a head from a '68 Beetle
