Frustrated 😭

I need to vent because the math and the script updates from IRS customer service are driving me absolutely wild.

My issue is just a rejected dd because of a wrong routing… why is it taking forever.

Here is how my journey with customer service representatives has gone so far for a direct deposit return conversion:

1. Call #1: "Just wait 60 days, you'll see an update or a paper check."

2. Call #2 (after 60 days): "Oh, actually... give it ANOTHER 60 days."

3. Call #3 (Today): "Actually, it's undergoing review. Allow 10 weeks starting from July 15th, and if you don't hear anything by late September, call us back!"

Every single time I ring them up, they just generate a whole new countdown clock out of thin air! 😭

Has anyone else gotten stuck in this endless loop where every agent gives you a completely different arbitrary timeframe? Does the 10-week clock from a random mid-month date actually mean something is moving behind the scenes, or is it just their favorite script to buy time?

At this point, I'm expecting my next call to be "Please wait 12-14 business lunar cycles." 🤡

UPDATE: Bounced DD Trace — Spoke with IRS Agent Today

I just spent an hour on the phone with an IRS representative regarding my returned direct deposit, and she confirmed that they operate on a standard 90-day processing window to re-issue replacement paper checks. For my case, that puts the cutoff deadline at September 23, 2026. She stated they are actively working to dispatch all paper checks within this timeframe, and instructed me to call back immediately after September 23 to open a lost check inquiry if it hasn't arrived in the mail by then. So if you're in the same boat as me, you should expect a check anytime between now and late September—the worst part for me is that I'm waiting for it all the way over in Fiji 🇫🇯!

Has anyone living overseas received an IRS paper check by international mail recently? How long did it take to reach you once Code 846 posted?

Code 720 & 971 (Returned DD) — How long after review deadline for Code 846?

My original direct deposit was bounced back in March. My transcript currently shows:

• Code 720: Refund repaid to account (-$4,226.57)

• Code 971: Request for replacement refund (dated 07-15-2026)

• Cycle Code: 20260605 (Weekly)

• Account Balance: -$4,226.57

An IRS rep gave me an internal trace review deadline of August 7th.

For anyone who had a bounced direct deposit trace:
1. How long after your trace review deadline did Code 846 actually post?

2. Did it automatically issue as a paper check, or did you get a CP53E notice to update bank info online?

Thanks!

Long Post! BUT PLEASE HELP!!

Aloha all,

Background & Current Status:

• Return Info: 2025 return filed via TurboTax.
• Original Refund: $4,226.57.
• Returned Deposit: My direct deposit failed and bounced back to the IRS (Code 720 Refund repaid to account -$4,226.57). Account balance sitting at -$4,226.57 (credit in my favor).
• Account Cleanliness: No fraud/audit freeze codes (no TC 810 or TC 420). Cycle code is 05 (weekly update).

TAS Application & Hardship Proof:
On July 16th, I submitted Form 911 to the Taxpayer Advocate Service requesting emergency manual release due to severe financial hardship. Attached full documentation including a $0.00 bank balance, overdue credit card bills, and living abroad in Fiji facing major local kitchen/infrastructure construction delays.

Internal "Do Not Refund" Note & Code 971:

• Internal Note: When I spoke with an IRS phone agent previously, they noted an internal department tag stating "Do Not Refund" with an internal review target date of August 7th. The agent explained this is a standard hold window following a returned deposit to prevent sending money back to an unverified/failed account.

• Code 971 Appears: My account transcript just updated with 971 Request for replacement refund (dated 07-15-2026, $0.00).

• Note: I did not submit a Form 3911 payment tracer myself. This Code 971 entry posted automatically right when the bank bounced the deposit on July 15th (a day before I submitted Form 911 to TAS).

My Next Steps:

  1. Calling TAS (+1-877-777-4778): Following up via phone this Friday to check intake status, verify receipt of my hardship docs, and get assigned an advocate/case number.

  2. Review Date (Aug 7): Waiting for the internal review window to pass to see if a replacement check/deposit or CP53E notice generates.

Questions for the Community:

  1. Code 971 & "Do Not Refund" Hold: For those who saw 971 Request for replacement refund after a Code 720 bounce, does the "Do Not Refund" tag typically drop automatically after the review date passes, or is manual agent intervention required?

  2. TAS Hardship Speed: If you submitted Form 911 with $0.00 balance proof, how quickly did your advocate step in to lift the internal hold and push Code 846 (Refund Issued)?

  3. IRC §6611 Overpayment Interest: Since the funds have been held past the 45-day statutory deadline from the filing date, will IRS overpayment interest automatically be added to the final replacement refund?

Appreciate any insights or feedback on this plan!

Sent Form 911 for $0 Balance Hardship. Realistic TAS timelines?

I’ve been stuck in the IRS delay loop for months after my direct deposit bounced back from a third-party bank. The regular IRS line just told me to wait until August 7th.

Yesterday, I finally emailed Form 911 to the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS). I requested a manual direct deposit and attached proof of immediate economic hardship (both my accounts are at $0.00 right now) and other hardships that I’m facing.

I just received the automated email confirming they received my submission and stating they will review it within 10 business days.

For those who have gone through this:

• How quickly did a Case Advocate call you after that email?

• Once they approved the manual direct deposit, how fast did it hit your account (I bank with Capital One)?

Manual referral on Code 720 (bounced refund) auto-rejected due to active review. Anyone else?

I called the IRS today and found out the manual referral an agent sent on July 8th was instantly rejected the same day with a "do not refund" note. The agent today said the system auto-rejected it because the active review freeze blocked the manual push.
The agent has now started a direct deposit trace and set an internal deadline of August 7th for an update.

1.Has anyone else had a manual referral blocked/rejected because of an active review hold?
2.If they resolve this by August 7th, how long does an international paper check usually take to arrive? (I am currently living abroad in Fiji).
3.If August 7th passes with no update, should I go straight to the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS)?
Thanks!

Code 720 / Bounced Deposit: Hit the 60-day mark today and IRS put in a referral. What next?

https://preview.redd.it/rahfd3hrzrbh1.jpg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9b4daa319adba458970af763d457d1173879261

Hey everyone, looking for insight on a rejected direct deposit.

My refund bounced back to the IRS due to a wrong routing number. Transcript: Shows Code 720 (Refund Repayment). My WMR tool has shown the "up to 60 days" review message (screenshot attached). Today is exactly day 60.: An agent submitted an internal referral to the processing department but told me to wait another 60 days.

1. If you've had a referral for a Code 720, how long did it actually take to see movement?

2. Will this trigger a paper check automatically, or can it unlock the online portal to update bank info?

3. Next week is day 70 since the Code 720 posted. Should I call back to escalate once that hard 70-day manual review window officially clears?

Thanks for any insight!

Forgot to report a 1042-S on original return, refund bounced (wrong routing), account now under review. What to expect?

Looking for some advice on my current tax situation and timeline.

When I prepared and filed my original return, I completely forgot to claim/report a 1042-S form (non-resident alien income with standard withholding).

A few weeks ago, my refund was sent, but the direct deposit bounced and was rejected by the bank because of an incorrect routing number.

Since then, I checked my IRS online account and transcripts:

  1. The 1042-S form is officially showing up on my Wage and Income Transcript with the correct gross income and federal tax withheld.

  2. I called the IRS, and the agent told me my account is officially placed under review for up to 10 weeks (the review start date was May 5th).

I am signed up for paperless delivery with the IRS.

My main questions are:

- Since the IRS already has my 1042-S matching perfectly on my Wage and Income Transcript, will they automatically adjust the return and release the correct refund after the review window closes, or am I forced to file an amended return (1040-X) myself?

- Because the direct deposit bounced, will a CP53E notice or bank update portal pop up in my paperless dashboard automatically, or will they default to sending a paper check even if the account is under review?

Would appreciate any insight from anyone who has dealt with mismatched 1042-S forms or bounced deposits during a review hold! Thanks.
