How do you handle plant care when you're away and someone else has to take over?

Every time I go on holiday, the same problem comes up: the person watching my plants doesn't actually know them the way I do. They get a rushed verbal rundown or a sticky note, and inevitably something either gets overwatered out of anxiety or just forgotten entirely.

I ended up building a feature into a plant app I've been making (Digital Garden) to deal with this: a shareable schedule so whoever's watching your plants can see watering/fertilizing reminders per plant without needing full access to your account.

Worth being upfront about the limitation though: the suggestions are species-general, not tuned to your actual plant's real condition in that moment. It won't know the soil's still damp and you should actually hold off a day. For someone who lives with the plants daily, that's a real gap. But for a short stretch where no one's paying close attention anyway, a decent general schedule beats a sticky note or nothing at all.

Curious how everyone else handles this, do you write out instructions, just hope for the best, or has anyone found a system that actually works well?

Digital Garden: Solo built a plant care app with AI diagnostics, stuck at 30 downloads with basically zero organic discovery. What's actually worked for you at this stage?

Hey all,

built Digital Garden over the past few months (plant care reminders tuned to species, AI plant ID/diagnosis, a light gamification loop). It's live on Google Play, but discovery is where I'm completely stuck.

What I've tried so far:

- Started an Instagram page for the app. Growth and engagement have both been very low.

Posted in a couple plant subreddits asking for feedback. Good engagement and comments there, but it hasn't translated into installs.

- Did a Play Store listing pass: solid keywords in the description, 8 screenshots.

- Haven't touched paid ads, TikTok, or influencers yet.

-

Current numbers: about 30 downloads total, mostly organic or friends/family. Only 5 reviews so far, so I assume the algorithm doesn't have much signal to work with yet either.

What I'm trying to figure out: for a niche consumer app like this with basically no budget, where's the highest leverage next move? Is it doubling down on content (Instagram, or switching to short form video), or does it make more sense to focus on building enough store signal (reviews, installs) before content even matters? Genuinely want to hear from people who've taken a niche app from zero, not general playbook advice.

Happy to share more specifics in the comments.

(Apologize me if you see again the post, but I probably made some mistakes and so old post is not visible anymore).
