Got this plant as a gift now I need to know how to take care of it
Has anyone kept a Venus Fly Trap alive? My kids and husband brought one home a year ago and it’s struggling. It wasn’t getting enough light over the winter. So a few months ago I made sure it got more sunlight (I moved it around to windows with light throughout the day). Now I’ve purchased a grow light and also have put it outside in warmer days (I’m in the Midwest and it’s been a cold spring). It’s still popping out new leaves but they seem to shrivel and die after a few days. Here’s what I’m doing:
- It’s in the pot/soil it was bought in
- it’s in a tray of water at all times- distilled water
- it gets 6+ hours of light (grow light + natural)
Is it just a lost cause? I’m spending a lot of time trying to revive this plant. But I won’t give up if there’s still a chance!
Got this cutie as a birthday gift 1 month and a half ago. It has had a great growth
I brought this monstera adansonii a couple of weeks ago from a local nursery. It looked fine this entire time.
I’ve been watching a leaf unfurl the past few days. Yesterday, it open a lot more and to my horror I saw mealy bugs inside. 😭 Upon closer inspection, mealy bug were in several places along the stem. I immediately moved the plant outdoors and sprayed them with 70% alcohol and showered down the leaves and stem with a decent amount of pressure. Just when I thought I was done , the plant slipped out my hand and some of the soil fell out. I noticed a lot of the roots were black so I decided to unravel the roots and see how bad it was. More mealy bugs in the roots 😩🤦🏽♀️ I tossed the soil. Diluted the alcohol a bit and sprayed the roots and the entire plant again with alcohol. I used a qtip to get in the crevices and showered it down some more. Some roots were bad and barely hanging on so I had to chop that one down and stick it in water. The other two were just ok. I did cut some from the bottom of each and any black roots I saw. I washed the pot with bleach and then soaked its with pure alcohol and let it air dry. I got fresh soil and repotted the other pieces. This poor plant took a beating! I just learned about mealy bugs after recently joining a this page, last week! I got so freaked out seeing them! I’m scared for my other plants. I don’t see anything on them but I sprayed them with alcohol too. (Overkill?) Idk if she’s going to survive but I ordered some insecticide soap and moved her into another room. Should I spray her again with alcohol tonight or wait for the soap? The soap will be here tomorrow but I’m worried because I will be away for Memorial weekend so I won’t get to spray the soap daily while I’m gone.
The leaf edges are drying and folding over themselves. I cut out two completely shrivelled up small leaves. I water them once a week with filtered water
Any idea why my Scindapsus would look like this after watering? Moisture meter was at a 3. I bottom watered with distilled water with a few drops of BTI and super thrive. I watered yesterday and it still looks the same :(.
I’ve had this since my grandpas passing but I think it’s time to repot it. Any advice would be appreciated! I love this plant so much and don’t want anything to harm it. Second picture is what the soil looks like.
This poor little baby I think is finally recovering. I’ve made a lot of mistakes with this plant. I’ve definitely over loved it. I’ve also been a helicopter watching it like a hawk to make sure it was okay lol. Idk if any of you went through that phase too. But just like relationships you finally get to that period of “okay I think I know exactly what to expect with this person”. Sometimes yellowing leaves just means nutrient deficiencies and not some catastrophic root rot😂 although she did have root rot because of my doing. The main reason why I wanted to post this is because my friend is big on nutrient deficiencies for plants and what it looks like. She had curling leaves that was saved by banana water. And I’m gonna try some coffee water for some extra nitrogen next. I think that will help with her pale/yellowing leaves.
Hey everyone 😅
So my husband knows I’ve been on the HUNT for a Moses in the Cradle (Tradescantia spathacea) forever, and he surprised me by bringing some home from Home Depot today. Super sweet.
BUT… I started looking at them closer and now I’m sitting here going:
“wait a minute…” 👀
Please tell me these are NOT wandering - 😭 because I have somehow managed to kill every single one I’ve ever owned. Like genuinely embarrassing failure rates.
Maybe they’re just babies and haven’t filled out yet?? I’m hoping??
first picture is what it looks like now. second pic is when i got it. i have been keeping it in shade/indirect sun with my grow light. i water it when the soil is no longer damp, but the nice big leaves have lost their dark color and are starting to droop? what conditions do i have to put it in to get that back? mind you there are new leaves starting to grow so maybe i should not be worried? the stems do not feel weak or flimsy, just leaning down?
I've had the plant for a year. However things went downhill due to my consistent watering especially doing from the roots. I stopped and scrapped off any mold on the soil and leaves with black spotting. I watered it less however it just didn't get better, is there a way I can revive her?
Hello all, I have a beautiful fiddle leaf fig that has well outgrown it's pot and there's a lot of water pooling happening I believe because of the roots blocking the soil. I need to prune the tree and the roots and replant it. Would appreciate any advice as I’ve never done it and what to look out for.
I found this at a grocery store. Don't ask questions. Is there anything I need to know? How much water does it need? I already know to use distilled water and to water it when the soil is dry.
Hi! I am noticing browning leaves happening more quickly even on new growth. Ive seen some ants in the pot and wonder if I have other pests as well.
Plant: philodendron selloum
Water typically every week now that it’s hotter outside. Trying to let it fully dry between waters
Light: indirect, was worried it was too shady so i got a grow light but unsure how frequently to use. Its in a room that gets SW light, but we have some big trees in front of the window that block the light more in the late spring/summer.
Problem has been happening for a few months now.
Thanks!
Hello all,
As the title suggests, I’m crowd sourcing recommendations for a grow light. I recently acquired a ficus elastica burgundy. It’s approx. 36 inch tall and healthy. My hope is to place it in a dark corner. It’ll be tucked behind a fireplace and receive virtually no natural light. I know this isn’t optimal, but space is limited.
I’m seeing so many conflicting reviews online. What would you suggest for a grow light, ideally one that’s budget friendly and aesthetically minimal? Also, is there anything else I should know? Thanks!
