Multiple people knock on my door asking for donations every single weekend

Ive moved here in October, and I havent had many weekend when people have not banged my gate asking for money.

Sometimes its for clothes, sometimes its for some old age home, sometimes its for orphans.

Today a lady and seemingly her child came knocking for the kids school fees, saying its due tomorrow. They had a school admission letter thingy and all that. Gave them 1000.

20 mins later, exact same scenario, exact same school, same handwriting on the letter. Lady and kid.

I told them I had already given to someone else and do not wish to give again.

She insisted saying everyone's been donating, donate whatever you can. I just need it for her books and uniform.

I refused.

She walked away cursing at me and told her daughter to do the same lol.

Are these people even legit? Did I get scammed? Dont schools normally have summer holidays during may?

Does this happen to you guys, what do you think?

Is success in tech possible without sacrificing work life balance?

Ive been in the software industry for 1.4 years now.

My 45 year old manager is constantly available for work, from 8am to 10pm and sometimes even beyond. He has barely taken any leaves and works on the leaves that he takes as well.

We regularly have working weekends, when most developers are working. Theres another team in my office, their regular working hours are 10am to 9pm. They chill in between, take smoke breaks, play table tennis

But theyre IN office for that one 9pm client call. Everyday, day in and day out.

These are people with spouses and kids. Id consider myself a failure if im 45 with a spuse and kid still working at 10pm, unable to sit with my family in peace, with undivided attention.

I hate this, I hate this life. Im 22, this is my first job. I love coding, I love building projects with code,I love solving problems. I genuinely do.

But I love my life more. I love cracking some dumb jokes and making my mom laugh while we have dinner together. I love washing the dishes, taking care of my home. I love sitting in the home I carefully decorated and relax and work on some of my hobbies.

Can I ever be successful working a 9 to 5 on most days? Do i have to put in 10 to 12 hours on MOST days to grow in tech?

Im totally okay with doing it occasionally, a few times a month. But regularly, im just not.

TLDR;

I see people in my office hustle, sacrifice their personal time. Im a big fan of work life balance and 9 to 5. Wondering if ill ever make money and do something impact full in tech.
