The Jail Mask Didn’t Form Over My New Sunglasses

Not sure why this happened. And sadly it didn’t happen when I tried it again.

Mathilde, The Fierce Fighter

Mathilde is a freelance Revenant Hunter who wanders the Frontier. She takes commissions for low rates, or sometimes free of charge. She even advertises her services by putting up posters in settlements like the Sunken City Refugee Village. Despite her willingness to help people this way, Mathilde is not the most approachable woman. She often carries an intense expression on her face, and tends to be aloof. Not to mention her sharp teeth are a little intimidating to some people…

Mathilde’s past is unknown, since she doesn’t talk much about herself. In general, she doesn’t go out of her way to talk to others unless it’s business related. And during the few occasions when someone wants to know more about her, she’ll only give vague responses. As a result, many people don’t know that Mathilde is actually a Revenant who masquerades as a freelance hunter. Her reason for doing so is a mystery, and it’s unknown which bloodline she hails from… Only a certain group of freelance revenant hunters know of Mathilde’s secret.

Unlike most Revenants, Mathilde mainly relies on hand-to-hand combat to fight, and utilizes numerous Far Eastern martial arts techniques. She’ll often train in secluded areas, spending hours practicing her forms, punches, and kicks. She trains as if she’s in an actual fight. She’s physically strong enough to slay lesser horrors with her bare hands. But when going up against tougher enemies, she switches to Rune Blades. She relies mostly on Combat Formae, but also uses some Blood Magic Formae.

Despite being secretive about her past, Mathilde is an ally of humanity, and works hard to help people by acting as a Revenant Hunter. Should you ever be in need of a Horror extermination but don’t have high funds, reach out to Mathilde.

Boy did I have fun making this new character and getting the screenshots! I organized the punches and kicks like a sort of fighting game combo. Mathilde’s backstory isn’t quite complete yet, and I’m debating if my initial idea for her will be good or bad. It might turn into a story for another day. I really hope the DLC has fist weapons or a hand to hand combat mode, because I’d love to fight like a fighting game character…

The Gilded Hunter

A new challenger approaches…

My past self despised fighting the Gilded Hunter, but I’ve gotten a lot better since I first played this game years ago. That was partially the inspiration for this video.

For those who don’t know her, Beatrice is one of my characters. She first appeared in my story“Akira and the Mysterious Maid” and has a mini series about restoring her memories. Feel free to read them if you want to know more about her. I felt like bringing her back since it’s been a while, and what better way than to show off what she’s made of.

There were actually more than 2 failed no-hit attempts, but Beatrice didn’t feel comfortable with including them in the video… Hope you all understand.

What happens if a CV2 Revenant drinks another Revenant’s blood?

A random thought I had just now. I know that in CV1 this situation would lead to a Revenant frenzying, unless you’re the Queenslayer. But is there any mention or information of this scenario in Code Vein 2? I don’t remember.

The Ridge of Frozen Souls Experience Part 2

Part 1 Here: https://www.reddit.com/r/codevein/s/TVfCg1PIUp

Kept you waiting, huh? Successor of the Breath was even harder to No-Hit than the successor of the Ribcage! I thought I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. I was having trouble figuring out how to edit the cutscenes of this episode since they had a lot more emotional moments than in the previous boss fight. But I think I did a decent job. I hope everyone enjoys the video, and thank you for watching!

I was just trying to get a thumbnail going for my upcoming video, and this jerk had the nerve to attack me while I’m in photo mode!

Before Frantz, Was The Butterfly

Recent posts inspired me to do my first No-Hit Butterfly of Delirium. Wish I could’ve been flashier, but I don’t have the confidence to go all out without getting hit. But I’ll improve someday. The OST is “Bloom of Doom” from Zenless Zone Zero.

Layla Torres, The Stalwart Guardian Chapter 2

Just when it seemed like her life was about to end at the hands of a horror, Layla Torres was rescued by Marlena Ryther, a seasoned revenant hunter. After learning of Layla’s unfortunate circumstances, Marlena offered her help, by personally escorting her to MagMell Island. Layla graciously accepts her offer, then follows Marlena to her campsite. It happens to be within walking distance of the building Layla had taken shelter in.

Marlena: “It’s a good thing I was already on my way here. Otherwise I might not have heard your screaming and gotten to you on time.” Marlena comments. Once they arrive at the camp, she has Layla enter her spacious tent.

Marlena: “I’ll keep watch for the night. It might be hard, but try to get as much sleep as you can. Okay, dear?” She speaks to Layla in a soft tone.

Layla: “… Okay.” Layla quietly answers.

Marlena briefly pats Layla’s head in a comforting manner, then proceeds to zip the tent’s door closed.

Image 2

Now, she stands guard in front of her tent, closing her eyes. She enters a state of rest without falling asleep. She listens closely to her surroundings, in case a horror pays an unwanted visit. But for a long while, Marlena hears nothing but the night breeze, crickets chirping, and the quiet rustling of leaves from the nearby trees. And then, she faintly hears a new sound. Quiet snoring coming from her tent.

Good… I was afraid that she would be so traumatized that it would keep her awake. But it seems like she was too tired. Sleep well, kid…

Marlena thinks to herself. She remains in her resting yet vigilant state for the entire night.
When the warm rays of the rising Sun cast over her, she slowly opens her eyes.

Alright… Time to get to work. Not often I do commissions free of charge. All things considered, I can make an exception for this kid. I’ve never escorted someone once in my life, but It shouldn’t be too much trouble.

Marlena internally psychs herself up. She opens up the tent, and sees that Layla is still fast asleep. After carefully waking her, Marlena prepares a simple breakfast for the 2 of them. It consists of bread rolls with strawberry marmalade, some thin sliced meats, and coffee.

Marlena: “That should be enough to fill your belly, right?” Marlena asks Layla after she finishes eating her breakfast.

Layla: “Yes. Thank you, it was tasty.” Layla answers graciously.

Marlena: “Don’t mention it. We’re going to be on foot for a while, so you need the energy for it.”

Layla: “I’m used to doing a lot of walking.”

Marlena: “Good. Then we’ll leave in about 5 minutes.

Image 3

After packing up their belongings, Marlena and Layla leave the campsite, and begin their journey.

Marlena: “Our destination is the Sunken City Pier, which is just past the Refugee Village. Just follow me, do whatever I tell you to do, and I’ll get you to MagMell Island safe and sound.”

Layla: “… Okay.”

The pair cautiously traverse the woods. Marlena stays alert, in case there are horrors nearby. They’re able to reach the clearing without any issues.

Marlena: “Ah… Get down.” Marlena quietly orders Layla, then crouches behind a large rock.
Layla promptly obeys Marlena, and crouches behind her.

Layla: “W-What’s wrong…?” Layla asks with a hushed voice.

Marlena: “One of my least favorite horrors is patrolling the area. A damn Moon Envoy…”

Ahead of them, the large horror floats around, scanning its surroundings with its search light of an eye.

Layla: “Is it… t-too strong for you?” Layla wonders.

Marlena: “Hmph. I could flay its nasty, overgrown tentacles with my eyes closed.” Marlena responds confidently.

Marlena: “The problem, is that I can’t fight it with you in my company. It’s got all sorts of destructive abilities. Long range projectile attacks. Last thing I need is you getting caught in the crossfire... So, we’ll sneak past this bastard to avoid unnecessary risks.” She explains. Marlena peeks her head from behind the rock, watching the Moon Envoy as it floats about. It turns around from the rock, then begins moving away from it.

Marlena: “Alright, we can go. Quiet steps now.” She guides Layla now that they’re out of the horror’s line of sight. They continue crouch walking until they reach the road.

Marlena: “… Okay. Now, we’ll take the highway to cut through the city.” She points at the inclined road in front of them. Layla looks uneasy after hearing Marlena’s plan.

Layla: “Is it safe? The last time my parents tried going there, there were a lot of horrors…”

Marlena: “They rarely stay in the same spot for long. I say we check it. And if there’s too many of them there, then we’ll use a different route. Let’s go.”

Marlena guides Layla up to the ruined highway. She walks ahead, looking for the horrors Layla mentioned. But at the moment, the road is empty. Save for the abandoned automobiles.

Marlena: “So far the coast is clear. Let’s keep going.”

Layla: “Okay.”

They proceed down the highway.

Marlena: “Hm…” Marlena spots something ahead, and stops.

Layla: “… Ah?!” Layla notices it as well, and can’t help but gasp.

Layla: “H-Horrors…”

Wandering on the highway are two horrors.

Marlena: “Relax. They’re weaklings, and there’s only two of them.” Marlena says calmly, then materializes her twin blades.

Marlena: “And I have two swords that will slice them down!” Immediately after declaring this, she darts towards the horror closest to her.

Marlena: “Herya!” She shouts, then delivers two swift, parallel cuts down the horror’s body. The blades effortless slice through the horror, eliminating it. The second one notices Marlena, and runs to tackle her.

Marlena: “Too…” She winds both of her blades back. Then, she swiftly dashes forward, closing the distance faster than the horror can.

Marlena: “Slow!” As she shouts this, Marlena performs a cross slash with her twin blades. This powerful attack eliminates the horror.

Marlena: “Hup!” Marlena back steps away from the horror, whose body is glowing brightly. Then, it self destructs, creating a small explosion. But the radius wasn’t wide enough to reach Marlena.

Marlena: “… See, dear?” Marlena says to Layla as she puts away her blades, then turns around.

Marlena: “There was nothing to worry about.” She says while flashing a pompous smile.

Layla: “Yeah… You’re really strong.” Layla relaxes now that the skirmish is over.

The two continue walking down the highway. Eventually, they reach the outskirts of the Clock Tower. In the past, this building once served as the Hero Josée’s outpost. But now, it’s in a ruinous state.

Marlena: “We’re getting closer to the village. Just ahead is the Eastern gatehouse. After we go through-hm?” Marlena abruptly pauses. She feels the top of her head for a moment.

Layla: “W-what’s wrong?” Layla asks.

Marlena: “I think it’s about to rain.”

Image 4

Just after Marlena says this, thunder can be heard nearby. And then, rain begins to fall.

Marlena: “Tsk. Just what we needed…” Marlena says with slight frustration. It starts with a drizzle, but then the rain gradually gets heavier.

Marlena: “Looks like it’s going to be a thunderstorm. Come on, we’ll take shelter inside the Clock Tower.”

Layla: “Okay.”

Marlena and Layla run into the ruined Clock Tower, before they get soaked by the rain.

Marlena: “Hmph. I suppose we’ll have to wait here until the storm passes.” Marlena says as she takes off her wet coat and hangs it.

Layla: “Yeah… The lightning is dangerous.” Layla says as she takes off her wet cloak, and hangs it next to Marlena’s coat. Marlena takes a seat on a countertop, then Layla sits next to her.

The two have been sitting quietly for several minutes. Outside, the wind is howling, lightning bolts are flashing in the cloudy sky, and the rainfall is still heavy. It doesn’t seem like the storm is going to be over soon. Marlena glances at Layla, and can’t help but notice the bitterness on her face. Though she already knows what is troubling her.

Hmmm… Maybe we should talk about her parents? Or is it too soon…?

Marlena internally contemplates. She would like to comfort Layla, but she’s unsure of how to properly go about it.

I… suppose I don’t have to be direct. If we just start talking, maybe one of us will find the right way to bring it up…?

With this idea in mind, she decides to start up a conversation

Marlena: “… Er, it looks like we’ll be here for a while. Maybe we could talk so that time goes by a little faster? I can listen to whatever is on your mind… or um, if you want, you could ask me some things…”Marlena makes this suggestion with a hint of awkwardness in her voice. She isn’t accustomed to casually chatting with children.

Image 5

After a few seconds of silence, Layla slightly turns her head towards Marlena.

Layla: “Um… what’s it like… to be a revenant hunter?” She asks quietly.

Marlena: “Hmm… It’s certainly not a fun job. There are some days when it can be stressful. But, it’s what I’m best at. Besides, at this point in my life I don’t have the luxury to switch my profession.” Marlena answers frankly.

Layla: “Uh, then why did you become a hunter…?” She asks with some confusion in her voice.

Marlena: “Well, I was practically molded into one. You see, my father was a member of the Association of Revenant Hunters, before it went to the dogs.” Marlena shuts her eyelids as she reminisces her past.

Marlena: “Daddy dearest wanted me to follow in his footsteps, and to become one of the best hunters the association has ever known. He actually started training me when I was around your age.”

Layla: “Really?”

Marlena: “Yes. He had me memorize the entire bestiary of horrors… Made me study revenant slaying techniques for hours… Fenced with me almost everyday…” Mid sentence, Marlena lets out a quiet sigh.

Marlena: “And all I ever wanted to do was learn how to make pretty dresses.” She remarks with slight amusement in her tone, letting out a short chuckle. Her eyelids slowly open.

Marlena: “My father was a bit overbearing, raising me to become a revenant hunter and all. But he had good intentions, so I never held it against him.” She says.

Layla: “… What was your mommy like?” Layla asks.

Marlena: “I… actually don’t have many memories of her. I lost my mother when I was barely 3 years old.” She reveals this, shocking Layla.

Layla: “Oh… T-That’s sad… I’m sorry…” Layla says empathetically.

Marlena: “It’s okay… She wasn’t part of my life for long, but my father told me everything about her. She was a remarkable woman. Smart, kind, and beautiful. I ended up taking after her too.” She makes a quiet chuckle after mentioning their resemblance.

Marlena: “But one of her best traits, was her bravery. You see, my parents first met when they were kids, while attending the same school.” Marlena’s eyes close as she thinks back on this story.

Marlena: “Back then, my father was weak and scrawny, so he got bullied a lot by the bigger kids. But my mother, was the only classmate who helped him. She confronted those bullies, yelling at them to leave her friend alone. Those boys were twice her size, but that didn’t stop her from standing her ground. She got them to stop bullying my father, and he fell in love with her right then and there. He was so captivated by her kindness and bravery that it motivated him to get stronger, and grow up to become a man who could protect her. And he did end up growing quite tall and strong. Haha…” Marlena can’t help laugh joyously.

Marlena: “Ah, forgive me for rambling. I’ve always enjoyed that story about my parents...” She says as her eyes open. She turns to look at Layla, and sees that she’s smiling.

Layla: “That’s cool. Your mommy sounds a lot like my mommy. She was really brave…” As Layla mentions her mother’s bravery, her smile starts to droop.

Layla: “She… stopped the horrors from getting me yesterday…”

Marlena: “I had no idea… If your mother was brave enough to face a horror, she must have loved you dearly.” Marlena says in a respectful manner. Layla simply nods in response.

Marlena: “… Was your father brave as well?” Marlena asks.

Layla: “… Y-Yeah. He was so strong too...” After saying this, Layla’s head tilts down to her lap, and her expression becomes gloomy.

Layla: “… I miss them…” She says while on the verge of tears.

Marlena: “Layla…” Marlena looks at her with pity. She closes her eyes, and takes a moment to think carefully of what to say.

Marlena: “The pain you’re feeling right now won’t be easy to overcome. It may even linger for as long as you live. But over time, you can alleviate it.” Marlena speaks in a more somber tone.

Marlena: “Even if we lose our loved ones, we’ll always remember them. And the love and care they’ve given us, that stays with us. Even after they’re gone. So, when you’re feeling down, when you miss your parents so much that it hurts, just look back on the pleasant memories you’ve created together. Remember how you felt during those times, and hold onto those feelings.” She imparts her guidance with sincerity.

Layla: “… Will that… r-really help?” Layla asks.

Marlena: “Yes. With your memories, you’ll find the strength to overcome your pain and sadness.”

Layla closes her eyes. Following Marlena’s wisdom, she looks back on her memories. Layla thinks about the times when she and her parents were able to share a good meal together. When they were able to help people survive thanks to the goods they traded. When she received tender hugs from her mother and father…
As Layla thinks of these fond memories, a soothing warmth begins to fill her chest. Then, the frown on her face, starts turning into a smile.

Marlena: “… Did that help you a little?” Marlena asks after seeing her expression change.

Layla: “A little… I still miss them. But, when I think about those memories, it kind of feels like they’re still with me…” Layla answers. A small tear drips down her cheek.

Layla: “Thank you, Ms. Marlena.” She says sincerely.

Marlena: “You’re welcome, dear.” She flashes a smile at her.

Marlena: “… By the way. It’s just about time for lunch. Are you in the mood to eat? I happen to have some sandwiches packed.” Marlena offers.

Layla: “… I’d like to eat.”

Layla and Marlena have lunch together as they continue to wait for the thunderstorm to pass. After a few hours, the rain finally starts to let up, and stops completely when the sunlight begins to shine through the clouds.

Layla: “Ah, I think the storm is over!” Layla says while looking through the window. She and Marlena get up and return to the entrance of the Clock Tower.

Image 6

Marlena: “That’s more like it.” Marlena says as she gazes at the sky.

Marlena: “That took a bit of time, but we can get back on track now. Let’s go, dear. It will be a straight shot from here to the village.”

Layla: “Okay.”

Marlena guides Layla to the Eastern gatehouse ruins. Just as they’re about to go past the shipping containers, Marlena halts.

Marlena: “Get up those stairs!” She urgently orders Layla as she points to the metal staircase to her left.

Layla: “Ah, okay…” Layla obeys her without hesitation. They walk to the stairs together.

Layla: “Is there a horror?”

Marlena: “You’re about to see it…”

After climbing the stairs, Layla witnesses what Marlena saw, and lets out quiet gasp of terror.

Image 7

Prowling the open space of the gatehouse ruins is a formidable horror. A giant, deformed ape. Its hefty steps create an echo that can be heard from Layla and Marlena’s position. Looking at it from far away scares Layla.

Marlena: “Just when I thought there wouldn’t be anymore obstacles to deal with…!” Marlena says while stifling a sigh.

Marlena: “Layla. I’m going to need you to wait in there, and to stay out of sight.” Marlena says as she points to entrance of the ruined bar.

Layla: “You’re going to fight it?”

Marlena: “I won’t just fight it. I’ll annihilate it.” She answers with confidence. Layla gives Marlena a nod, then enters into the bar as she was instructed to.

Image 8

Drawing her twin blades, Marlena hops over the railing, and jumps into the impending fight.

Image 9

Marlena: “Oi! You fat gorilla!” Marlena shouts at the horror as she runs towards it.

Marlena: “I don’t have time to monkey around, so let’s make this quick!” After she gets its attention, the horror roars at Marlena, and engages in combat. It leaps into the air, and strikes down at Marlena with its balled fists.

Marlena: “Ha!” But Marlena nimbly dodges its attack, evading not only its fists, but the shock wave it created from slamming them on the ground. The horror then swings its arms at Marlena. Much like before, she evades its attacks with swift dashes. Then, just as it’s about to throw a punch, Marlena parries its fist with her mutinous bracer.

Marlena: “Nice try!” After her successful parry, Marlena performs Swift Blades at the horror’s defenseless left arm, making a deep cut across it.

Deformed Ape: “RAAARGH!!!” The horror roars in anger. It slams its right fist at Marlena, but she dashes out of the way.

Marlena: “I’m getting tired of this!” Immediately after dodging, Marlena quickly closes the distance, then unleashes a flurry of speedy slashes at the horror. She cuts at its body and face repeatedly.

Marlena: “Hiryaa!” Then, she ends the assault with a jumping cross slash.

Deformed Ape: “AAAAAARGHHHH!!!” The horror yells in pain as it staggers backwards.

Marlena: “Hmph. You’re mine now!” Marlena says with a smirk. Capitalizing on the horror’s vulnerable state, she prepares to deliver a final blow.

Image 10

Materializing from her jail, a pair of wolf heads form at each of Marlena’s sides. They each make a ferocious bark.

Marlena: “Alright, boys. Sick ‘em!”

Image 11

After she issues this command, the wolves begin to maul the horror. Biting and tearing its flesh to pieces, until they rip out the horror’s heart from its chest. The horror then falls on its back, and begins to dissipate into golden particles. Marlena has successfully eliminated it.

Marlena: “Hmph. You should’ve gone to the jungle instead of loitering here.” She mocks the horror. After its body completely fades, Layla comes down from the other entrance of the bar. She meets Marlena’s smug gaze.

Marlena: “It went just like I said it would. Right, dear?”She asks Layla as she dematerializes her twin blades.

Layla: “Yeah, you were incredible!” Layla says with amazement. Marlena chuckles at her compliment.

Marlena: “Now that that’s taken care of, let’s get a move on. Before something else gets in our way.”

Image 12

Leaving the Eastern gatehouse ruins, Marlena and Layla walk down the road. And this time, they’re able to reach the Refugee Village without encountering any horrors or obstacles along the way. After going through the village, they arrive at the entrance to the Sunken City Pier.

Marlena: “This is it. It’ll be smooth sailing from here.” Marlena says while gesturing to the pier.

Layla: “I haven’t been on a boat in a long time…”

Marlena talks with the ferryman. He radios the island to send a ferry over. While they wait for it to arrive, Layla and Marlena take in the sight of MagMell Island.

Layla: “That’s where we’re going?”

Marlena: “Yes. That’s MagMell Island. It’s home to an institute that once researched formae. But now, the institute focuses on preserving human society, and houses refugees from all over the frontier. That will be your new home.”

After waiting for several minutes, the ferry finally arrives. Marlena and Layla board the vessel, and ride it to the island.

Image 13

By the time they arrive on MagMell Island, the sun has already set. Marlena is first to exit the ferry.

Marlena: “We’re in the homestretch now. We have a little more walking to do, but we’ll arrive at MagMell Institute in no time.” Marlena says. She notices that Layla isn’t next to her, and turns around. She sees that Layla is still standing in front of the pier, gazing ahead at the island.

Marlena: “Well? Aren’t you coming, dear?” She beckons to Layla, getting her attention.

Layla: “Oh… Yeah.” Layla answers with a nod, then follows Marlena.

Image 14

The two walk up the shore path leading to the island’s central road. Going up the road until they reach the central gatehouse, the two walk up the the hill path, leading them to the entrance of MagMell Institute.

Marlena: “Almost there. Once we go down this elevator, you’ll finally get to your new home.” Marlena says encouragingly.

Layla: “Yeah…” Layla should be happy, yet something seems to be troubling her. The two board the elevator, riding it all the way down. Once the doors open, Marlena is first to exit. Layla slowly steps out of the elevator after her.

Image 15

Marlena: “Here we are!” Marlena announces.

Layla: “Wow… This place is huge…” Layla comments as she takes in the large front hall of MagMell Institute.

Marlena: “Indeed. The institute has everything you need here. Warm beds, plenty of food, a nice little recreational room. It even has a hot spring!”

Layla: “Wow…!”

Marlena: “But most importantly, it has security. You can live here peacefully, and you’ll never have to worry about the horrors again.” After talking about MagMell’s amenities, Marlena turns to look at Layla.

Marlena: “Well, just like I promised, I’ve escorted you here safely.”

Layla: “Yeah… Thank you so much for helping me, Ms. Marlena. You’re the best.” Layla gives her heartfelt gratitude with a smile.

Marlena: “You’re welcome, dear.” She flashes a smile at Layla.

Marlena: “When you go in, look for a really tall lady with platinum blonde hair, a cute white-haired girl with golden legs, or an adorable pink-haired girl with an arrow through her head. Tell them about what happened to you and how you got here. They’ll show you around the institute and help you settle in. Okay?”

Layla: “… Okay.”

Marlena: “Then I’ll be taking my leave now. I wish you the best, Layla. Be safe, and live well.” Marlena bids farewell to Layla, then waves her hand.

Layla: “… Goodbye, Ms. Marlena. Thank you for everything…” Layla says sincerely. The two turn around and proceed to part ways.

Image 16

As Layla walks forward, her pace begins to slow to a near halt. Her heart is beating anxiously fast. She should be happy that she has new home where she can live peacefully and safely. Yet, she feels a certain pain. And she realizes that this pain is growing stronger, the more she walks away from Marlena…

Layla: “… No…” She says quietly to herself as she stops in her tracks. And then, she abruptly turns around.

Layla: “Wait!!!” She cries out loudly in a high pitched voice.

Marlena: “Huh…?!” Startled by Layla’s sudden shout, Marlena stops just before she can enter the elevator, and turns around. When she does, she sees Layla running towards her.

Marlena: “Whoa?!” Layla runs straight into Marlena, and hugs her tightly by the waist.

Marlena: “W-What’s wrong?” Marlena asks with a concerned tone.

Layla: “I don’t wanna say goodbye… I don’t want you to go…!” Layla says with an emotional voice.

Marlena: “Wha…?” Marlena is surprised to hear this.

Marlena: “Why is that?”

Layla: “I like you… I liked traveling with you, talking together, seeing you fight horrors. You’re so nice to me too. You make me feel happy…” Layla explains herself as she looks up at Marlena.

Image 17

Layla: “Please… Stay with me.” She pleads to her.

Marlena: “Layla, I can’t. I have to travel a lot to do my job, so I can’t live at here MagMell.” She says apologetically.

Layla: “Then take me with you!” Layla suggests.

Marlena: “What? Are you crazy?!” Hearing this suggestion makes Marlena raise her voice.

Marlena: “You’ve seen first hand how dangerous the Frontier is! I can’t take a child with me while I hunt horrors!” She says sternly.

Layla: “B-But-”

Marlena: “No buts!” Marlena interrupts, then gently separates Layla from her.

Marlena: “I brought you here in the first place to keep you safe! I’m not going to put you in harms way after what you’ve been through!” She says adamantly.

Layla: “But I don’t want you to go!!!” Layla yells. She enters a borderline tantrum as tears begin to pour out of her eyes.

Layla: “I don’t have friends, or family…! I don’t have anyone with me! Please don’t go! Please don’t leave me…!” Sobbing, Layla begs Marlena with all her heart.

Marlena: “Layla…” Marlena looks at her with pity. For a moment, she feels like giving her a hug and comforting her. But she stops herself from giving in.

No! Don’t let her sad little eyes sway you, Marlena! You’re doing this for her own good… You can’t let her get attached to you.

She yells at herself internally.

Marlena: “… You’ll make new friends here. There are kids living here too. You’ll bond in no time. You won’t be lonely.” She tries to assure her.

Layla: “B-But… But you’re my friend too!” Layla declares.

Marlena: “I’m…?” She can’t help but feel a little awkward about a child calling her their friend.

Layla: “I want you to be with me! Please, Ms. Marlena! Please, please don’t go…!” Layla begs once more. Tears continue to leak from her eyes.

Image 18

Marlena: “… Grrrr…!” Marlena closes her eyes and contemplates her choice. She doesn’t say a word for several moments. Until she takes a deep breath and exhales.

Marlena: “… You’re going to owe me quite a lot…” She says.

Layla: “Huh…?” Layla is confused by what she means.

Marlena: “I work as a revenant hunter to make living, you know. But I escorted you here to MagMell free of charge. And now, you’re requesting me to stay with you? I’ll need some form of recompense for my service...” She says in a demanding tone.

Layla: “Uh… but I-I… don’t have any…” Layla speaks worriedly. Marlena then sighs quietly.

Marlena: “… I’ll stay with you. And in return, all I want, is for you to grow up to become a big, strong girl.” She states her condition in a soft tone.

Layla: “… Huh?”

Marlena: “You heard me. I want you to become a dependable young lady. Someone who can live without needing the support of another. Someone who has the strength and resolve to survive in this harsh world.” After clarifying this, Marlena opens her eyes, then flashes Layla a playful grin.

Marlena: “Do you think you can do that for me, dear?” She asks her. Layla’s expression quickly uplifts.

Layla: “Yes… Yes, I can do that! I’ll become a strong lady! Just like you!” She declares with a smile.

Marlena: “… Then it looks like I’ll be moving in.”

Layla: “Ms. Marlena…!”

Image 19

Without warning, Layla gives Marlena a big hug.

Marlena: “Whoa…!” She exclaims from her tight contact.

Layla: “Thank you! Thank you so much…” Layla says, relieved to have her stay. Marlena then gently hugs her back.

I don’t want to live here, I really don’t. But at the same time, I just cant bring myself to leave Layla like this… It’s not like I’m going to replace her parents and become her new mother. She just needs more help to overcome her loss. At most, I’ll give her the right guidance so that she grows up into a proper young lady…

Marlena rationalizes her decision. Layla continues to hug Marlena for a long while. Eventually, she lets go.

Marlena: “Haha… I was worried you were going to hold me all night, and then I’d have to sleep while standing up again.” She says jokingly.

Layla: “Sorry. I… just really wanted to hug you.”

Marlena: “It’s okay, dear. Why don’t we go find Lavinia now and tell her that we’ll be staying together.”

Image 20

Layla: “Who’s Lavinia?” Layla asks as she follows Marlena.

Marlena: “She’s the really tall lady I mentioned earlier. She’s the leader of MagMell, and she’ll take care of us. I’ve actually done some commissions for her in the past, so we’re already acquainted.” She explains.

Layla: “Is she a nice lady like you?”

Marlena: “Oh, you’ll find out soon enough. She’s just up ahead.” Marlena says after they go down the stairs.

Layla: “… WHOA?!” Layla can’t help but exclaim when she sees the towering woman in black standing in front of her.

Layla: “She really is tall…!” Layla blurts out loud. Lavinia is puzzled by MagMell’s newest guest.

Marlena: “Hi, Lavinia. It’s been a while, hasn’t it?” Marlena greets her.

Marlena: “I don’t suppose you could spare some lodging for two beautiful young girls, can you?” She asks her in a playful tone.

Lavinia: “… I’m afraid I only see one young girl.” Lavinia says in a serious tone.

Marlena: “I see you still don’t know how to joke around…”

Layla Torres, The Stalwart Guardian Chapter 1

The path of a revenant hunter is one that Layla Torres never expected to take. The life she used to lead was more peaceful, as peaceful as it can be living in a world on the brink of its demise. But all it can take is one fateful event to change a person’s destiny. An event, that would mark the beginning of Layla’s story.

Image 2

As a child, Layla traveled the Frontier with her parents, Hugh, and Maria. The family of 3 made a living as merchants dealing various survival supplies. The business benefited them, but they also enjoyed helping people get by in the harsh conditions of the Frontier. One day, the family were on their way to the Sunken City refugee village to make some trades. Unfortunately, they encountered a formidable threat along the way.

Image 3

A vicious Werebeast stood in their path. After spotting them, the horror would prepare to strike. Without hesitation, Hugh got in front of his wife and daughter, brandishing his axe at the malicious beast.

Hugh: “Keep Layla close. I’ll handle this…” He directs his wife.

Layla: “Daddy…” The young Layla can’t help but be worried for her father.

Maria: “It’s going to be okay, sweetie.” Maria says to her daughter in a calm tone as she holds her close.

Hugh: “Come at me, you bastard. You’ll regret threatening my family!” He says fiercely as he engages in combat.

Although Hugh is not a revenant hunter, he is stronger than most people, and a somewhat competent fighter. Thanks to his trusty Heavy Axe, he has been able to protect his family from lesser horrors. But this is the first time he’s fighting a large beast like this. Despite that, he fearlessly charges at the Werebeast.

Image 4

Hugh: “Hraaa!”

Winding his axe back, Hugh delivers a powerful horizontal swing aimed directly at the Werebeast’s exposed heart. He moves faster than the horror anticipated, and it’s unable to defend itself. The hefty blade of the axe cuts the beast’s heart, making blood spray out from it. In a single attack, Hugh eliminates the Werebeast.

Hugh: “… Whew…” He lets out an exhale of relief.

Image 5

Layla: “Cool. Daddy is so strong.” Layla says in awe at her father’s sheer strength.

Maria: “He sure is.” Maria says in admiration.

Maria: “I’m glad this went-huh?” Mid sentence, Maria notices something in the corner of her eye. When she turns her head to look, she sees another Werebeast, leaping into the air. It’s going straight for Hugh.

Image 6

Maria: “Ah! Hugh! Look out!” She frantically warns her husband.

Hugh: “Wha?!” Hugh sees the horror coming at him. However, he isn’t able to avoid its attack on time…

Image 7

Hugh is struck in the chest by the Werebeast’s halberd. The force from this brutal attack makes blood burst from his chest.

Maria: “Ahhh!” Maria screams in horror as she witnesses this.

Hugh: “….. aaa……” He makes a quiet breath before his body goes limp and lifeless…

Layla: “D… D-D-D… Da…..” Layla trembles as she sees her father’s lifeless body on the ground.

Maria: “Hugh… N-No…..” Maria is in disbelief.

It wasn’t long ago that the family were making the best of their circumstances in this unforgiving world, enjoying the time they spend together on their travels. But in the blink of an eye, Maria has lost her dear husband. In an instant, Layla has lost her loving father. They’re both greatly distressed from witnessing his untimely death. But they won’t have time to mourn…

Image 8

“Raaargh!!!”
The Werebeast lets out a loud, threatening roar.

Layla: “AAAAAHHH!!!” Layla screams in terror from hearing it.

The bloodthirsty Werebeast, not satisfied with killing Hugh, now sets its sights on Maria and Layla.

Maria: “Ahh…?! Ahh!” Maria was still in a state of shock. But hearing her daughter’s cry brings her back to her senses. Pulling herself together and fighting back her tears, Maria takes her daughter’s hand.

Maria: “Layla! We have to get away!”

Layla: “A-a-a-ah…!” Whimpering, Layla stands frozen in place.

“Rrrrgh…!”
Growling, the Werebeast begins to move towards Layla and Maria.

Maria: “LAYLA!” Maria desperately yells.

Layla: “Ah?!” Layla gasps and looks towards her screaming mother.

Maria: “Run! Now!!!” Maria yells as she pulls her daughter’s hand, forcing Layla to start running.

Layla: “Ahhhh!” Layla cries out in fear as she runs.

Maria: “This way!” Maria guides Layla into the nearby ruined building.

Maria: “We’ll cut through here! Squeeze through a space that horror can’t get through! That’s how we’ll get away…!” Maria explains. It’s a sound plan.

Image 9

At least, it would have been, were it not for the horror lying in wait behind the support beam…

“Grrrrr!”
The dog-like horror growls, then lunges at the unsespecting Maria. It swipes its paw directly across her back.

Maria: “AGHHH!” She screams in pain. This attack causes Maria to stumble and trip.

Image 10

Layla: “No! Mommy!!!” Layla screams and turns around to help her mother.

Layla: “Ah…..”

However, she freezes up when she sees what’s past her mother. The Werebeast has found them. And to make matters worse than they already are, a pair of malformed dogs join it. They spot Layla, staring her down with their menacing red eyes.

Layla: “Ahhhh…!” Seeing more horrors further panics Layla. She doesn’t even notice that the malformed dog that attacked her mother is about to pounce on her.

Maria: “No you don’t!!!” However, Maria stops the horror from attacking Layla by grabbing it. Through sheer adrenaline, she manages to hold the malformed dog in place.

Layla: “Mommy!”

Image 11

As she restrains the horror, Maria notices that more of them are about to enter the ruined building.

Maria: “Layla… Go! Get out of here as fast as you can…!” Maria orders her daughter as she struggles to keep the horror from moving.

Layla: “But, w-w-what about-”

Maria: “Just listen to your mommy and run!” Maria interrupts. If she lets go of the horror, nothing will stop it from mauling her. Or worse, it will kill her daughter. She knows this. That’s why…

Layla: “No… No, no! I don’t wanna leave you!” Layla yells.

Maria: “I’m so sorry, sweetie. But I can’t go with you…!” Maria says with a voice full of regret. She desperately wants to stay with her daughter. But in order to keep her safe, a sacrifice has to be made. She turns her head to look at Layla

Maria: “I love you, Layla. So please, go now, and don’t look back…” She pleads to her with a sad, yet heartfelt voice. Tears begin to roll down Maria’s eyes.

Layla: “M-Mommy…!” Layla desperately wants to stay with her mother. She doesn’t want to say goodbye. But she understands that if she doesn’t go, they’ll both be killed…

Layla: “I love you too…” Layla says to her mother, then forces herself to turn around. She begins to sprint out of the building, as fast as she can. When the pack of horrors enter the building, Maria shouts and swears at them, drawing their attention to her…

Image 12

Leaving through an open wall that leads to an abandoned railroad station, Layla flees.

Layla: “Haaah! Haaah…!” She breathes heavily from forcing herself to run faster than she normally can. As she runs down the train platform, she faintly hears a scream. An agonizing, painful scream, belonging to a woman. Layla knows who made this scream.

Layla: “Aaaaaaah!!!” Layla cries out in anguish as she continues running, desperately trying not to listen to her mother’s screams…

Image 13

Layla doesn’t think. Her mind is overwhelmed. She just runs. It doesn’t matter where she runs to, as long as she can escape from the horrors, and as long as there aren’t any horrors ahead of her. Before she knows it, Layla finds a building, secluded in a remote area of the woods.

Image 14

Layla: “Haaaa…! Haaa…!” Exhausted from running so much, Layla begins to slow down.

Layla: “Aaaaaa…..!” Her gasps for breath, slowly transition into whimpers.

Layla: “Aaa… Aaaaa… Aaaa…..!” Losing strength in her legs, Layla falls to her knees. Her body trembles violently. She hyperventilates. The weight and gravity of her situation comes crashing down on her.

Layla: “WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHH!!!!”

Unable to maintain her composure any further, Layla wails loudly. She cries and sobs profusely. Until she runs out of tears to shed, breath to scream, and energy to move…

Image 15

Hours have passed since Layla took shelter in this abandoned shed. The sky has darkened. Layla sits on the ground, motionless. Her body and mind are severely fatigued. She doesn’t know what to do, what she can even do. She’s alone with no one to help her. All she can do, is remain where she is, and hide from the horrors. She can’t hide forever, but it’s the only option available to her.

Image 16

“Rrrrrr…”
Suddenly, an animal like growl cuts into the silence of the night. Hearing this unsettling noise makes Layla shiver.

Layla: “A-a-a-a-a-a-ah….” She quietly whimpers, fearfully turning her head towards the source of this noise. Standing at the entrance of the building is a horror. A malformed monkey with several skulls and glowing red eyes on its face. It carries a sword.

Layla: “A-a-a-ah! AHHHHHHHH!!!” Layla screams in terror upon seeing this horror, and stumbles backwards. She tries to get up, but she’s panicking so much that her legs go numb.

“Rrrrheheh…”
The Horror slowly approaches Layla, seeing her as an easy prey to kill.

Layla: “Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!” Layla screams loudly when she sees it approaching her.

The horror raises its sword, preparing to slash Layla…

Image 17

But just before it can get close enough, someone dashes into the building at breakneck speed. In an instant, they appear in the Horror’s blind spot.

???: “Hraaa!!!”

Then, using her sword, she slices down the Horror, making a single, clean cut across its body. She attacked so swiftly that it took a moment for its blood to spray out of its wound. With this single attack, the horror is effortlessly eliminated.

???: “And stay dead you filthy horror.” She says as its body disperses to particles.

Image 18

???: “Hmm…” The mysterious woman notices Layla, and turns her attention to the young girl.

Layla: “… wow…” Layla says quietly, amazed by the skill of her savior. She meets the gaze of this older woman’s blue eyes.

???: “So those screams came from you?” She asks Layla, speaking with a breathy voice.

Layla: “… Y-y-yes… Erm…” Layla answers, but her screaming has taken a noticeable toll on her voice, making it sound hoarse and scratchy.

???: “It’s a good thing I rushed over here as soon as I heard you.” She puts away her twin blades, then slowly approaches Layla.

Image 19

???: “What’s a little girl like you doing out here late at night? Did you get lost?” She asks.

Layla: “I… I lost… m-m-my mommy and daddy… Horrors… k-killed them… I ran away, and t-then I got here…” Layla explains her circumstance.

???: “Ah, that’s terrible… I’m so sorry for your loss.” She gives her condolences with sincerity.

???: “Well, in that case, how about I help you? There’s this place called MagMell Island. A safe haven where you can live peacefully. And I can bring you there. Would you like me to?” She makes this offer in a gentle tone.

Layla: “… Y-Yes… Pl-please help me…” Layla accepts her offer without hesitation.

Image 20

The mysterious woman gives Layla a warm smile, and offers her hand to help her up.

???: “My name is Marlena.” She introduces herself.

Layla: “… My name is Layla…” Layla gives her name as she reaches and takes hold of Marlena’s hand.

Marlena: “What a pretty name. Well, Layla. I promise that you’ll be in good hands. You can count on this old hunter to keep you safe.” She declares wholeheartedly.

Metagen Remnant (NG+) But With Different Boss Music

Song: Stand and Fight! | Path To Nowhere

I sometimes listen to other songs during my repeat playthroughs for certain bosses. I feel like this song goes pretty well with the Metagen fight. Does anyone else do this?

My Hopes For The DLC

Looks like some of us are getting excited for the State of Play tomorrow, since there’s a chance of getting a trailer for the Mask of Idris DLC. And that excitement is spreading to me now, so I figured I’d make this post to talk about the things I hope the Mask of Idris DLC will have. It goes without saying that I hope it will have a good story, but here’s 4 things that I’m specifically hoping for.

Large Map

I hope this DLC’s scale will be on par with Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. An expansive map comparable to the size of the Frontier, with interesting areas to explore, and rewards that make the exploration worth your while.

Motorcycle Upgrade

I’ve enjoyed riding the Motorcycle, but it could use some improvements. I hope we can power it up so that it goes faster, and doesn’t slow down so much when going up inclines.

New Weapons

We’ll likely be getting new weapons, but I hope to see new armaments that aren’t simply recolors of base game weapons like with CV1’s DLC. I’d like to see weapons with unique movesets and charged heavy attacks in this DLC.

Costumes and Accessories

For our partners, and for our own characters. I’d love to see Josée in a kimono or a samurai armor. And Lise deserves something else to wear too. I want Holly to get a cute nurse outfit. And I hope Lyle gets some punk style clothes since he likes rock music!

Also, I really hope this DLC is successful so that it motivates the devs to make more content for the game. For example, if Oskar doesn’t have any relevance in the DLC’s story, maybe they could create a new quest line for him to resolve his story. Or maybe make the small island near MagMell explorable. Stuff like that.

Marlena’s Hunters

Although Marlena Ryther has retired from being a revenant hunter, she takes apprentices under her wing, and trains them to become skilled hunters. Here’s 2 of her recent apprentices. Layla Torres, the young lady on the left. And Garrett Calhoun, the young gentleman on the right.

Their backstories and lore are nearly complete, so I’ll make a proper post about Layla and Garrett another day. Although, there might be a few hints about their characters and lore in some of these screenshots. Except for the last 2, those I just made for funny stuff. Feel free to speculate about my new hunters in the comments.
