Never been a better time to get back into the black for exobio...

Taking a quick 10 thousand LY jaunt for the CG, getting really comfy in the Nomad... estimating half a billion in exobio with first footfalls... around Butterfly Sector on to Sagan's Research Center in Thor's Helmet Sector for some shore leave (and some Operations)... then back tomorrow to the CG station to hand in the data.

Rainy day IRL vanlife, perfect for some space knitting^(tm)

PS. Confirming none of my exobio data was lost when dying in an Operation. And Visited Stars data no longer deleted. Good to be able to do some pewpew without those consequences.

Regarding reports of Visited Stars cache being lost after playing Operations

For attention of explorers, I can confirm it looks like my Visited Stars data was wiped after playing a bit of Operations (file is now only 1K data size, down from 400) Luckily I have a backup from a couple of weeks ago ... and fully documented the process to restore them a few years ago.

This might be useful for others too, assuming you have a backup

First impressions of Operations 8 out of 10

All in all, I think it is working pretty well. I'd always love more FPS though but I'm guessing that's as good as they can get it.

Successful in about 3 out of 5 operations. Mostly Easy ones. They ARE tough. Pretty hectic.

A little more spit and polish in the UI... also, enable standard on foot key combo for emotes in the lobby would be better than the horrid unresponsive wheel.

The ship interiors are quite large and maze like at times. Some of them you're gonna need night vision... and don't run out of power while looking for a battery pack! Check your power levels and the radar very regularly for situational awareness. Reload weapon and rearm your weapons whenever you get the chance. It gets absolutely frantic. I can see why a team of 4 is actually recommended.

I am usually averse to playing with others, I'm a hermit by nature... but the random wing ups with strangers are actually OK and not having network issues (even though I am on a mobile 4G connection) these were all my first concerns given that you cannot fill up your slots with NPCs.

Once the initial buzz dies off though I worry it might end up like CQC lobby graveyard.... also, do something like this with CQC, maybe even roll existing CQC match play into Operations but have them as training and racing "Operations" ! It would be good to have that neglected area brought into the main game.

Setup and ran a few Powerplay Operations undermining other powers...

PRO TIP: make sure your Galaxy map is set to show all powers before you go in to setup a Powerplay operation... otherwise you cannot see any systems to choose at all -- as the Operation configurator you should see them all by default in the Operations UI imo. Was very confusing at first.

So far this was a great re-introduction to the craziness that is multiplayer wings. Actually good fun.

Warning that this is definitely mid-to-late stage gameplay, don't dive into this if you are a noob with no suits guns or engineerring and not yet familiar with the mechanics of ship and on foot combat. Do all the general training and at least upgrade suits and ships a bit and get familiar with on foot combat via general missions otherwise you will get steamrolled.

11 years in and it was a challenge for me... though I AM also getting old lol

NOTE: There is a nasty side effect of playing Operations that wipes your Visited Stars database

Make a backup of this annoyingly local file before playing! Luckily I had one from a couple of weeks ago. This makes all your previously visitied systems appear red (unvisited) on the galmap filter that normally shows them in green.

I discovered one of those undocumented improvements I so love to find !!!!

For the longest time it has irritated me that the latitude longitude globe lines do not show up in Odyssey after a detailed surface scan... I had it listed in my lengthy linked document/manifesto shown at the bottom. Essentially this was my issue compared to Horizons...

>After DSS scanning worlds we should still see the faint lines of latitude and longitude (and therefore also indicating the poles) of landable worlds like it did in Horizons. Navigating to interesting areas we have seen from just the system map is made harder without it. E.g. If I saw an interesting mountain location pretty close to the polar area or nearer the equator from the system map in Horizons I would use the lat/long lines to figure out where I needed to head before even entering orbit (this is necessary because we cannot bookmark interesting planetary lat/long locations***, which would be another useful addition to have***!

Horizons | Odyssey (previously prior to this update)

NOW IT LOOKS LIKE THIS AFTER A SCAN --- SO FRICKIN HAPPY ANOTHER BRILLIANT EXPLORATION QOL UPDATE!!!!

I have hope that Fdev are working through my list LOL

ALSO, My Carrier finally has people back in my bar, for about ten updates my carrier had a deserted bar except for my very bored barmaid who was beginning to talk to herself like it was the Overlook Hotel and drinking all the stock.

This automatic door opening to welcome me just tickles me in special places

Exploration with the in-Nomad 'ping' scanner, followed by composition data scan of biological and geologicals, and quickly landing for a full artemis scan is 🧑‍🍳😘

Remember to grab some BEFORE lighting pics of favourite places for the AFTER affects of tomorrow's update

I saw very little in the partner program videos to make me think it will satisfy the diehard naysayers. Go grab some latest screenshots and recreate them after the update to see how they fare.

E.g. Stations close to dim red or blue stars, on and above planets with or without atmosphere at similar locations, above and inside rings etc.

I'm hoping for enough changes to be at least noticeable even if not as intense as back in the Horizon's day.

Oh and a few shots from close to the core would be interesting too, that was a colourful place before it'll be interesting to see how that changes with the more realistic milky milky way colouring.

I'm looking forward to digging through the release notes and in-game for undocumented fix surprises - the new features are great, but its the fixes and QOL I really get hopeful of.

Just a random unrelated picture

Help to decide what optimally to build next in colony.

My colony is going well, but having been away from it for a while doing CGs and IRL vanlife exploring, and not following super closely what if anything has changed on Fdev's end in regard to colonisation changes and not wanting a full time job figuring out the intricacy of all the market levers and balances, I thought I'd throw it out to the hive mind.

Antliae Sector VZ-P b5-5

I currently have 1 x tier 2 and only 3 x tier 3 construction points so I guess I am only building Tier 1 and 2 surface settlements and hubs or 1 and 2 space installations/ports for a while until I have earned enough tier 3 constuction points for any more big ports (if building any more are even recommended - which is another thing I am unsure of).

It would be great if sites like the one above (OR IN GAME ITSELF), could just make some generic suggestions based on what you already have, and what is likely to result from changes based x, y, z ... e.g. build more [types] for more [things]

Background goals

I'm not really looking to colonise any other adjacent systems right now, happy to just plod along with this one... at some stage I might do another colony from a different starting point like Colonia or whatever. But changes to improve ability to build up this one would be good

Also I quite like some conflict zones popping up (as shown), and enjoy protect missions (both legal and illegal) popping up on the boards if they can be more likely with some kind of colony tweaks... again, not sure if colonisation is something that can make those more likely or not, or if that just boils down to background sim twerking.

IMO RE: The Nomad and older ships...

The list of older ships capable of SLF bays is not that huge

  • Keelback (Class 5)
  • Alliance Crusader (Class 5-6)
  • Krait MkII (Class 5-6)
  • Type-9 Heavy (Class 5-7)
  • Type-10 Defender (Class 5-7)
  • Federal Gunship (Class 5-6)
  • Beluga Liner (Class 5-6)
  • Anaconda (Class 5-7)
  • Federal Corvette (Class 5-7)
  • Imperial Cutter (Class 5-7)

If they just made a concession for two or three of the older exploration meta ships that'd be OK in my opinion, Krait, Anaconda and maybe Beluga... I think that'd keep everyone happy.

As it is I don't really mind. Happy to go with the new meta.

Just messing around with journal log files going back ten years... grepping for least occuring strings

I really wanted one of the 3rd party helper tools e.g. Observatory or EdCoPilot to alert me if anything appears in the logs which are not already a known thing... e.g. something unique in the system after a honk, FSS or DSS - e.g. a new type of beacon or planet type or signal source never seen before, which otherwise I might totally no even investigate if I didn't visually spot something... long shot I know but I always think its a gap in knowledge, an unknown unknowns thing which might be able to be alerted to just by way of being a unique string.

Had some fun with WSL linux grep tool

grep -vE '"event":"(ReceiveText|SendText|Music|Sound)"|"Channel":"(npc|voice)"' "/mnt/c/Users/YOUR_USERNAME_HERE/Saved Games/Frontier Developments/Elite Dangerous"/*.{log,journal} | grep -hoE '[a-zA-Z0-9_-]+' | grep -vE '(^-|^[0-9]+(\.[0-9]+)?$|^[0-9]{4}-[0-9]{2}-[0-9]{2}T[0-9]{2}|^[a-zA-Z0-9]{3}-[a-zA-Z0-9]{3}$)' | sort | uniq -c | sort -n | head -n 10000 | sort -nr

Sadly I did not find any log referrences to tinfoil hat rabbit holes, but was an interesting experiment

EDIT: refined the command a bit to exclude a few more things like any text that appears in commanders and NPC messages, carrier numbers, date strings, etc. Limits to 10000 of the least repeating unique strings

Posting here now to remember to go back to it later and for others to chip in ideas.

Who knows, maybe someone has a a unique string in their logs like "Ra%%la_here" lol
