Can someone give me the TLDR on all of this... I can not keep up/make sense of it!

I have flown into LGB a few times. Sometimes the back door opens and sometimes it doesn't. I am landing at 8:00 AM on Friday and need to pick my seat on Southwest. I have a quick layover (40 minutes). Any insight on how/when they decide to open the plane?
