Anyone else almost get hit by a crazy woman in a truck today?

While driving home from work on the 710 to ocean blvd this woman kept trying to cut me off and was screaming at me and other people out of her window. She almost caused multiple accidents by getting in front of people and then slamming on her brakes. I don't know if she was intoxicated or mentally ill but it was pretty insane. I didn't manage to get her plates. I'm just surprised she didn't kill someone.

🚨 LONG BEACH BUDGET CUTS COULD HIT CITY SERVICES HARD

Long Beach is considering deep budget cuts — and city employees could be the ones paying the price.

Police officials warn that eliminating 54 sworn positions would leave the department at its lowest budgeted staffing level in three decades, potentially affecting patrols, 911 response and serious-crime investigations.

Health and Human Services is also looking at personnel reductions, while Community Development has proposed cutting 8 positions, including 7 in Housing and Neighborhood Services and 1 in Code Enforcement.

And here’s the part that shouldn’t get lost…

“These are not just positions on a spreadsheet. They are peoples, careers, families, and retirement plans, said Elmer Gonzalez, his wife’s position is slated for layoffs.

With Long Beach preparing to be on the global stage for the 2028 Olympics, is this really the time to reduce the city workforce and potentially cut services?

👇 What do you think?
Should Long Beach balance its budget through employee cuts — or should layoffs be off the table?

Odd smell in Down town Long Beach

I’ve noticed every morning after 8:30/9am there’s an awful smell, I have to close my windows I get a bad headache- not sure what or where it’s coming from. I understand there’s construction going on and the ports are near by too. More concerned for my health than anything

Need info for a hit and run

Hey Reddit this may be a long shot but I’m giving it a go. About two weeks ago my car was hit while it was parked in front of my garage in an alleyway off e Appleton. Someone in a black dodge challenger came speeding down the alleyway around 9pm and took out my headlight and smashed my bumper and fender. Luckily my neighbor witnessed it and we were able to find the damaged challenger dumped right next door at the laundromat. I’m still waiting on a police report to get the drivers insurance but it’s taking forever and in the meantime this has been a massive financial burden for me and I’m really struggling. If anyone knows who this car belongs to or has any information that would help me get in contact with them to get insurance details that would be so helpful. Also be safe and watch out for all these absolute maniacs with zero regard for anyone out there on the road. Thank you!

Going to FMB amphitheatre, do you still get to see any of the backdrop like the queen mary from the pit? Also like all of row 3 is available across the 300s (even the center), there a reason not to get those?

Got hit by a car on my e-bike

Absolutely brutal. Just thankful to be alive. I hit the hell out of my head on the concrete. All blacked out Altima took a spontaneous hard right at a green light while I’m in the protected bike lane, didn’t check their perimeter and just laid me out. Happened so fast. They slowed down I think to make sure I wasn’t dead and after an unhoused man helped me up they sped off in a way that felt like a sigh of relief. Like oh we’re clear, go.

Happened around 1pm there wasn’t much foot traffic or vehicle traffic so really the only person who witnessed it was the man who helped me. He realigned my bike chain and made sure I was okay to continue riding my bike. So thankful. I’m just glad I’m alive.

I’m just making this post as a PSA, you can do everything right and still end up nearly dead. I was seeing stars I hit my head so hard on the concrete. Just grateful to be okay. I don’t even care about justice or finding out who they are I’m just so thankful that I walked out of this alive. And they should thank their lucky stars they didn’t murder someone on a Tuesday afternoon.

Long Beach Unified is going to outsource child care programs

So here is what I think. I think that the reason any childcare employer has trouble keeping staff is that the pay is not high enough for the amount of hard work or stress the job entails. OR the employer has really high standards as far as background checks or wanting employee candidates to have degrees in early childhood education or at least be studying towards that degree.

This makes me wonder about the 3rd party vendors. Are they keeping staffed by lowering standards? Are they keeping staff by having a higher children-per-adult ratio?

The second set of slides says the City of Long Beach is going to collateralize buildings to borrow $50million from Wells Fargo without a distinct written out plan for where that money will go. It is implied that the intention is for it to go to infrastructure projects. I wonder if this is fixing potholes, putting solar panels on all city owned buildings to lower costs in the long run or doing infrastructure projects to make Long Beach look good during the Olympics?

Be sure to thank Kate Raphael for her excellent reporting on child care. Here is the whole article link: https://lbpost.com/news/education/lbusd-is-changing-many-of-its-before-and-after-school-programs-heres-what-we-know

Help!

I was out on a walk by the beach and noticed this dog laying in the sand near the pedestrian pathway. It seems a little skinny and looks tired. I’m not able to take this dog home but I’m hoping someone sees this and is able to help 😭 He/she is near Bluff Park, in between the streets Orizaba and Paloma.

What’s up with you drivers

I grew up in Glendale and had 4 years of work in studio city and my stroll through long beach for a fb pickup has been the worst driving experience. Glendale and studio city are pretty bad but I would say they’re ego driven drivers. Long Beach is was just full aggression for no reason. The amount Tailgating, cutting people off I saw in my 45 min visit to long beach was atrocious

Am I tripping out or does the night sound insanely noisy?

Maybe I missing context for an event I didn’t hear about or something but the last 2 nights with the windows open it sounds like this insane noise coming from downtown filling the night sky? Almost like a plane constantly flying overheard or a train going over train tracks?

Curious if anyone else has heard it.
I’m over on the east side near 7th & Redondo, but the noise is coming from the west towards downtown.

LOST DOG: Skittish; found on beach near Bluff Park pedestrian path(between Orizaba/Paloma)

Found this dog on my walk by the beach (next to the pedestrian pathway) heading west towards Bluff Park. This is the pathway directly below Ocean and in between Orizaba and Paloma.

I am unfortunately unable to take the dog and animal control is currently closed.

I’ve been trying to get closer but the dog is skittish and I don’t have anything on me to give him food or water. (Yes I tried looking around for something). He ended up walking behind the bushes so I can’t see him anymore but he is still nearby.

17th and Junipero?

Is this area relatively safe? I'm a female in their 30's, looking to rent. The unit is secured and has an underground parking garage.

I've previously lived in downtown near 6th and Pacific, just trying to gauge the safety of this area.

Thank you alllll

As Long Beach weighs cuts to close a $60 million budget gap, past projects show how the city has managed money

As Long Beach leaders consider millions of dollars in cuts to city services to balance next year’s budget, the debate is putting renewed attention on how the city has managed some of its largest projects in recent years.
The city is confronting a $58.2 million structural deficit in its General Fund for fiscal year 2027 — the portion of the budget that pays for many of the city’s basic services, including police and fire.

While Long Beach’s total proposed budget is roughly $4 billion, much of that money sits in separate funds dedicated to specific purposes and cannot simply be used to cover the General Fund shortfall. To balance the General Fund, the city manager has proposed a combination of departmental reductions, funding shifts, new revenue and other cost-saving measures.

The projects examined below did not cause the current General Fund deficit, and many were paid for through separate funding sources. But as city leaders decide where to cut, the projects provide context on how Long Beach has managed tens of millions of dollars in public money — including projects that grew in cost, experienced years of delays or raised questions about oversight.

Driver in LB having a mental health crises and speeding

Just got out of my car and a driver was speeding extremely fast down Appleton st. Didn’t even stop at the intersection. I held my hand out to motion “what are you doing” and he stopped his car, got out and approached me (not in a threatening way) and was just super hyper, talking gibberish and I asked him what’s going on and he said he’s trying to kill himself. Hence why he was driving so fast. He was walking away from me going in circles around his car and I and I asked him if he wants to talk and he yelled “no just leave me alone”. And he got back in his car and sped off. He looks like he may be Mexican, late 20’s, 5’8, wearing what looks like a lime green shower cap/hat, a jacket, shorts and a dark colored t shirt. If you know him please get him some help. I called 911 so they know but please keep an eye out and stay safe out there.
