I've never played D&D and would love to join a campaign to begin!

Disclaimer: This is an absurd question. I am new. I don't know much.
I have not played D&D before, but recently have taken an extreme interest into it. I'm aware that it's not recommended to be a DM first instead of a player, and highly unrealistic- but after researching D&D as someone who loves worldbuilding I've seen that DMs have the power to worldbuild and lead players and stories through it. I'm considering building a campaign, but have a few wonders first. The world, obviously, is fantasy-- HOWEVER, I want to know if it's possible for say, something like this: at some point players discover some kind of portal/wormhole/rift that takes them into a reality of 80's America. Obviously, they will get back to their world at some point, but if that could be some sort of plot where they navigate their way through a society like that, hiding and using magic for the good and bad. I'm asking if this is easy to navigate? possible? realistic? fun? Any/all criticism, feedback, ideas, are welcome.
