Apartment Living + Retired Greyhounds

Hi everyone! I recently became really interested in retired greyhounds and wanted some honest opinions from people who actually own/adopt them.

I’m a third grade teacher, so I work a fairly standard school-day schedule during the week. I’m planning to move into my own apartment later this year after getting my finances settled, and I’ve been trying to realistically evaluate whether a retired greyhound would actually fit my lifestyle and if I can provide a good home for them.

I definitely prefer calmer/lower-energy dogs over super high-energy breeds, and I’m much more interested in adopting an adult dog than raising a puppy. I currently own several reptiles/amphibians that live in secure enclosures in a separate room, and I also have experience with older dogs already.

The apartment would likely be fairly large and located in a quieter suburban area rather than a busy city environment. I’d also be living alone, so the dog would be my main companion animal. I’ve heard retired greyhounds are often surprisingly calm and apartment-friendly, but I also know prey drive can vary a lot, so I’m trying to be realistic and responsible before seriously pursuing one.

Do you think a retired greyhound could realistically be a good fit for this type of lifestyle? What should I know that first-time adopters usually DON’T think about?

Thank you!

Young teacher deciding whether it’s smart to move out or not

I’m a 23 year-old teacher in Connecticut trying to decide if moving out of my parents’ house this summer is financially smart or not.

Right now I make about $49k/year gross, which comes out to around $2,925/month take home after taxes. In August I move up a step on the salary schedule and will make about $51k/year gross, with estimated take-home around $3,060/month. I have good credit (around 750), about $9k in savings, stable salaried employment, no kids, and no major debt besides my car payment.

The apartment I really like is around $1,500/month total and is literally right near my school. The huge benefit is that I’d almost completely eliminate my commute, which currently costs me a lot in gas, time, and wear on my car. It’s also one of the first apartments I’ve toured that I actually genuinely liked.

My estimated monthly expenses if I move out would roughly be $1,500 rent, $550 car payment, $150 phone/family bill, around $115 electric, around $150–250 groceries, plus smaller costs like internet, pets, gas, etc. I’d still have some money left over each month, especially after my raise, but obviously not an enormous amount.

The thing is, I don’t HAVE to move out right now. My parents are supportive and I could stay home longer if I wanted to. But I really want independence and my own place.

I’m trying to figure out whether taking the $1,500 apartment would actually be financially irresponsible, or if it’s more just “tight but manageable” for someone in my situation. I genuinely can’t tell if I’m being unreasonable and jumping the gun!

what’s one thing you wish you knew before you got your hognose?

I’m hoping to get a hognose in the next couple months and I am so excited! I have several reptiles and amphibians, but this will be my first snake so I’m doing a ton of research. What’s one thing you wish you knew before you got your hognose? PS- pics not required but are VERY encouraged cause these snakes are so cute omg

Maybe I’m thinking too deeply into this lol. Is there anything extra to it beyond sharing your family tree?

I uploaded my tree to GEDMATCH and only received one result- a Sarah Craig Cooper, born in 1725 in the Chickasaw Nation in Mississippi. My ancestors were Choctaw AND had the last name Cooper, so I wasn’t sure what this actually meant. This woman isn’t anywhere in my trees, and when I try to research her nothing shows up. Is she just someone from someone else’s tree?
