Why is Youth Allowance still lower than JobSeeker?
I was looking at the May 2026 Centrelink rates and noticed JobSeeker for a single person is still noticeably higher than Youth Allowance (away from home). The gap seems to be roughly $130–$150 a fortnight depending on circumstances.
What I don’t really get is the reasoning behind it. If someone on Youth Allowance is renting privately, their costs for rent, food, electricity etc aren’t really any different to someone on JobSeeker. So I’m wondering what the actual policy logic is here. Is it mainly based on the idea that younger people can lean on parental support, or is there something else that justifies keeping the rate lower?
