Portrait of a man with a red scarf.
For this piece, I wanted to blur the subject so it would blend into the background. I applied the colors to the areas I wanted blurred while the base layer was still wet. Unlike my previous works where I used a lot of paint, I used less pigment and more water for this one.
For this piece, I started with the background and then moved to the hair—I wanted to establish my darkest tones first to guide the rest of my painting. I carefully preserved the highlights while laying down the initial wash for the face. Once that dried, I layered in the shadows. The key was using a variety of colors for the darks and letting them blend naturally. This foundation is probably the most important part; after that, it's just a matter of detailing the features!
