sfchronicle.comDoes anyone have any experience using ATIP to apply for Old Age Security (OAS) records?
The family member I am researching is perhaps unusual as she left Canada in 1929 and returned in the late 70s, before dying in 1984. All her surviving descendants have always lived in America.
We are striking out on Canadian Source documents. No Birth Certificate, No Baptismal Record, No Canadian census record, No school records, No Passport or Citizenship Certificate records (via ATIP). When she returned to Canada in 1979 she would have been 67. She wouldn't have collected CPP because she never paid into it, but she would have qualified for at least some OAS.
I am planning on doing an ATIP request for this info to see what survives. Does anyone have any experience with these files and their use in genealogy ?
Can anyone help me figure out this serious birth certificate discrepancy ?
I'm doing research for a family member. I've put looking for a birth certificate for her Grandmother on hold, and went looking for her Great-Grandmother. I've found a birth certificate which matches the parents perfectly....but not the date of birth or name/spelling of Great-Grandma.
Great-Grandmother was Amelia Ellen Herrling. As far as we know she was born 21 March 1886 in Agassiz in the Fraser Valley in British Columbia. Her mother was Mary Caroline Ling born 15 August 1860. Her husband was Charles August Herrling born 10 January 1826 in Hungary. They would have been 16 and 49 when they married.
Charles Herrling is reported to have cleared a crown grant of land in Yale District in 1858, and Herrling Island is still named after him. It is just north of Popkum First Nations reserve, which is likely the reason Charles and Mary met.
This birth certificate from Royal BC Museum shows the parents as Charles A. Herrling and Mary Herrling Mary Ling.
The name of the Baby appears to be Emma Herrling and the date of birth is November 17th 1884. Charles A. Herling is reporting the birth 19th May 1884.
Is it possible the name Amelia is being mistranscribed as Emilia or Emma ? Even if so, how can it explain the two year discrepancy and a winter birth instead of a spring birth ? Is it possible that this could be another child of a couple, but if so why does record of her appear on no existing family trees ?

Trying to figure out if my Great-Grandfather had a birth certificate
I am helping my cousin with her Canadian Citizenship application. Documenting her Grandmother, Elsie Turner-Zimmerman, has proven far more complicated than I expected. She was born in 1912, and there is no evidence she ever had a birth certificate. We are waiting for her Ontario death certificate from 1984 so British Columbia will search for one.
In the meantime the United Church of Canada has searched their baptismal records for both New Westminster and Burnaby and found none. Elsie's parents were married in a methodist church, although their marriage record lists Elsie's mother Amelia as being Catholic, and another record lists her as being Baptist.
I contacted the local schoolboard and found her school records were schredded in the early 1980s.
I did an ATIP request for any records of her applying for a passport or a citizenship card. None were found.
The 1921 Census was taken just after Seth's first wife (Elsie's Mom) died, and either Seth was inebriated or the information was obtained from a neighbour, because most of the names and ages are wrong.
Elsie emigrated to the United States in 1929, and the earliest surviving voters list is from 1935 so she does not appear on it.
At this point the application could potentially consist of the following
Certified Ontario Death Certificate for Elsie from 1984.
Uncertified local newspaper obituary for Elsie from 1984
Potentially Elsie's certified US Alien Registration Card from WWII where she does list herself as being Canadian
Potentially a certified copy of her immigration record from the United States, which lists her father (my Great-Grandfather), Seth Raymond Turner, as crossing the border with her when she emigrated to Michigan.
Uncertified copy of my Great-Grandfather, Seth Raymond Turner's obituary from 1930 published in the Globe and Mail which mentions Elsie by name and that she lives in Detroit.
Potentially her marriage license from Michigan, where she presumably lists her birthplace as Canada
Potentially her social security application from 1971, where she presumably lists herself as Canadian.
Potentially contemporary obituaries for her 7 siblings published between 1933 and 2025.
I say potentially here since I haven't gone to the expense of ordering copies of all of these things.
My next thought is to go one generation back. If I can find a birth certificate for Seth Raymond Turner, or his first wife Amelia Herrling it would strengthen the case in the event no birth certificate is found. Given the fact they were born in the 19th century when record keeping was spotty I am wondering if anyone can help me determine if there is any evidence of either of them having a birth certificate, which I could then order from offifical channels ?
They were
Seth Raymond Turner born 2 July 1885 in McKays Corners, Chatham-Kent, Ontario. He lived most of his life in Wallaceburg and died in surgery in Toronto following a workplace injury 14th January 1930. I remember my Grandmother pointing out the window once and saying it was snowing like this on the day they buried her Dad.
Seth's first wife, and Elsie's mother, was Amelia Ellen Herrling (later known as Amelia Turner) born 21 March 1886 in Agazzis, Frasier Valley, British Columbia. She died in childbirth 21 January 1921 in Wallaceburg Ontario.
I am hoping that if either Seth or Amelia had a former birth certificate it can be used to animate the chain of descent from Elsie to her living descendants.
Anyone has any suggestions of where to look, other than just paying money to the province to search the official records ?
Looking for help narrowing down how to find a baptismal record
Hi everyone
I am helping my cousin in the United States to research for a C3 claim.
Unfortuantely it seems likely that our Great-Grandfather never bothered filing a birth certificate. Obviously we have to request one to get either the birth registration or a letter confirming none was found. Unfortunately British Columbia needs a death certificate, and the wait in Ontario is about 4 months.
We have requested a certified death certificate from Ontario. The National Archives in Kansas will also provide a certified copy of her Alien Registration Document from WWII but I have held off on ordering this to avoid the expense in case a birth certificate is found.
In the interium it seems prudent to see if we can locate a baptismal record from Canada. I am genuinely unsure which demonination she might have been baptised as, as various generations of family members appear as different deminations in the census documents, sometimes different denominations living in the same household, unless methodist and church of england are the same thing ?
I am hoping someone who is more knowledgable in this subject can direct me where to look.
The ancestor in question was Elsie Orillia Turner, later Elsie Zimmerman born 28 January 1912 in New Westminster British Columbia. Died died January 13th 1984 in Wallaceburg Ontario
Her father was Seth Raymond Turner, born July 2nd 1885 in Chatham Kent Ontario. Died 14th January 1920 in Toronto. I am genuinely uncertain of his denomination. CAN ANYONE FIND A RECORD OF SETH, POSSIBLY A CENSUS RECORD, THAT MIGHT SHOW HIS DENOMINATION ?
Elsie's mother was Seth's first wife Amelia Ellen Herrling born 21 March 1886, in Agassiz, Fraser Valley, British Columbia. She died 21 January 1921 in Wallaceburg Ontario. She appears to have been at least nominally Catholic. If Elsie was born in New Westminster and baptised catholic, which diocese would hold that record ?
Given that Elsie was born when the family was living in British Columbia, assuming she was baptised it likely would have taken place there. Anyone have any suggestions on how to narrow this search down ?

I got autographed photos from both Hawthorn's today
I got some autographs in the mail today. I sent Chevy Chase a Community photo to sign. Unfortuantely due to the volume of requests he gets he didn't sign it, but his staff sent me a medium sized photo he had presigned.
I also got some autographs from Larry Cedar who played Pierce's Dad. He signed two Community photos, as well as a photo from Star Trek The Next Generation, 1978 Battlestar Galactica, and Stargate SG-1. I swear this man has been in every tv show I have ever loved.
I've put the photos on imgur if anyone wants to see them.
Update on long missing Star Trek actress
Hi everyone.
A couple of years ago I posted here looking for help to determine if an actress from Star Trek had died. Unfortunately we were stymed by limited information at the time.
original post here https://www.reddit.com/r/Genealogy/comments/1bvuxc9/looking_for_help_in_how_to_determine_if_an/
Good news I found the answer.
Sad news is, as I expect, she is dead.
I don't have the exact dates, but I solved the mystery by contacting the women's costumer from Star trek The Original Series. Her name is Andrea, she is 82, and is one of the last surviving crewmembers from the show.
She also has a fantastic memory. She sent me a wonderful letter giving details about Jeanne Malone's life and career outside of Star Trek, and photocopied a photograph of Jeanne from her personal album showing her in her costume from the episode "Journey to Babel". These can be seen here : https://imgur.com/a/d8dbUBE

hollywoodreporter.comLooking to see if digital copy exists of this record before I do a FOIA
Hi everyone. I am looking to find a copy of my Aunt Elsie's Alien Registration record. A few weeks ago I used the library ancestry account, but the records I have only have a typed record of the contents of the record, not the record itself. National Archives says the record is not yet available online.
I am about to do an FOIA requesting a photocopy of the original record, but before I do that I was hoping someone could check to see if the record exists anywhere, and perhaps I just failed to save it.

Can anyone can find a digital copy of an Alien Registration Card before I do a FOIA
Hi everyone.
Looking to see if any of the paid databases might have this record before I pull the trigger on an FOIA request. This is a family member's Alien Registration Record for WWII. It is the only place I have found that specifies her place of birth and date of birth, since she doesn't appear to have a birth certificate.
